All the greens from the hills and trees came alive, it was a wonderful trip! I even managed to capture a little waterfall on the last photo! On a family trip to Wales last summer, I made time for the usual suspects: Pembrokeshire, Aberystwyth, Anglesey and the national parks. I also made a day trip to Devil’s Bridge, a place I had only seen in a couple of episodes of Hinterland, a noir crime drama set in Wales. The dark and atmospheric Devil’s Bridge comprises three bridges that span the Afon Mynach, a tributary of the Rheidol. Each one, built upon the previous bridge, can be reached by the Rheidol Steam Railway, and had made it to my travel wish list since I saw the show in 2018. I am not the only one who’s guided by the screen when it comes to travel plans. According to Expedia, the screen is sparking wanderlust across the world. Its No-Normal: Unexpected Travel Trends revealed that 66% of travellers worldwide have “considered visiting a destination after seeing it featured in a show or movie they have streamed at home, and 39% have booked a trip for the same reason”. Vale of Rheidol Railway wagon 34117 The Vale of Rheidol Railway “box wagons” were originally built for the short-lived Plynlimon & Hafen Railway by the Midland Carriage & Wagon Co. They arrived in 1901 and there were 15 in total. They were taken into Cambrian Railway stock in 1913 and Great Western Railway stock in 1923. Six survive today, having been used as loco coal wagons, bolster and timber wagons, and as engineers ballast wagons; the rest were scrapped by 1938. GWR 34117 was one of the ex-Hafen wagons that didn’t survive. The model is made from a Parkside Dundas kit with Old Time Workshop transfers. Front End Friday 'Wren' from the Vale of Rheidol creates a scene of what might have been as two workers are pictured carrying out their duties on a long lost industrial railway. In actual fact, this scene was created a few years ago on a private section the former standard gauge track bed of the Bromyard Branch in Herefordshire. The line has roughly over a mile of 2ft track and this was the first steam locomotive to operate on the line. Some great inspiration for sunken rails running through the soil and moss here.
