I missed #EarthDay because - life. This beautiful @greenfibres cotton satin has been dyed with alder cones & iron (green); onion skins (yellow); avocado stones (pink) and silver birch bark (tan). I feel unbelievably grateful to have this connection to the Earth through discovering its colours. I wanted to write a bit about what led me to quilting with #plantdyed fabrics. It’s so niche. It’s a niche of a niche. But I think it's an example of following a deeply human instinct. I knew I wanted to be outside more, to be more connected to the earth, to feel more rooted. I wanted to know the names of more plants, to spend time in the sun (and the rain). It’s hard to describe the chaos of house building and tree planting and long days outside that created the circumstances for my first plant dye bath, but one day I had some calico I found in an old trunk, a big pot, an open fire and we had just cut a big patch of nettles. Here is the April Cushion in Light Grey. I made these log cabin blocks as starter blocks for a quilt, but found I liked them better on their own. This is dyed with oak and iron, and uses a classic ‘log cabin’ motif. I am not sure what brings me back to the log cabin block again and again, but when I look at the quilts I inherited from my mum I realise that the two largest are both log cabin quilts - so maybe it’s just that I have spent my life looking at these shapes so they feel somehow familiar and comforting, and the essence of quilting. Two of these recently sold & are winging their way to Ireland, so there’s JUST TWO LEFT! (Link to shop in bio!) One of my favourite things about finishing a quilt is using it. Need a picnic blanket? Quilt. Chilly? Quilt. Dog crate cover? Quilt! I've done double bed quilts before, but at 150 meters sq this is my largest wall quilt and what a joy to make! The brief was to incorporate the classic quilt star pattern with pine forest green as the client's new house is surrounded by big pine trees and to use creativity and experience. I've learnt a lot sewing at large scale with a toddler in tow, mostly if I'm organised and don't procrastinate, then it's achievable. I’ve had a lovely bank holiday weekend despite being struck down by migraine yesterday, thankfully my meds are still working for me and it only lasted around 9 hours instead of the usual 3-4 days!🥰 I managed to get my awesome 50% size Leopard Print Quilt Block finished up today & I love it so much!
