🌱For International Compost Awareness Week 🌱 Here's a simple guide to composting from @national_allotment_society "Compost expert Rod Weston states that: 🌱 When composting you need roughly equal proportions of layered Greens and Browns. 🌱 Materials will decompose more quickly if cut into short lengths or shredded. 🌱 Long handled shears makes it easy to cut the material without getting backache. 🌱 Grass clippings are best mixed with Browns - for example mix in woodchip together with the grass. 🌱 Turn the material in the top layers of the bin monthly for the first few months to let in air and avoid compaction. 🌱 Alternatively knock the bin over and then refill it. 🌱 Or - a technique used by many composters - fill the bin and let it get on with it!" Lack of public toilets forcing people to stay at home! The I Newspaper have reported that "One in five people do not leave their house as often as they would like because of a lack of public toilets. Three in four adults believe there are not enough places to pee in their area, the survey of 2,000 people across the UK by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) found. It claimed the nation’s health is being threatened as a result. Among people with medical conditions which can require frequent visits to the toilet, such as diabetes and bowel conditions, more than two in five (43 per cent) said this was the case. The RSPH is calling for Government action to address the “neglect” shown towards facilities in the UK." Add this to the ever-mounting Sewage problem and we're just not dealing with toilets in an effective manner. But, waterless? Build your own outhouse!! An outhouse is perfect for a rural or natural setting which does not have a regular toilet or drain. We provide three types of toilet which are 100% compatible with a self-build outhouse. 🔥 Incinerating toilet. This is the where urine and solid waste are incinerated into ashes. The ash that remains works great as plant nutrition. These can come with some drawbacks however. They are incredibly heavy (so you need to double up on your floor joists) and can use a lot of electricity. 💧 Urine diverting toilet. This is the most popular for low use (great for the garden!), it's a toilet that separates urine from the solid waste. Separett’s urine diverting toilets divide everything at the point of use, which means that the urine is completely sterile. The urine can therefore be mixed with water and used as plant nutrition. The solid waste, on the other hand, ends up in a separate container and is composted in a dedicated compost pile. 💩 Batch composting system. Set in a remote, beachside location down steep steps near Torquay in Devon, England, this cafe owner has no mains water or septic tank. During the summer, customers have access to a mains toilet up the road, but the staff needed something closer and more convenient (and the mains toilet was closed in winter). After discussions with the cafe owner, Linzi, we agreed that the WooWoo GT would be the most appropriate system. It was simple to use, had very low maintenance requirements and was entirely off-grid. Linzi purchased the WooWoo GT 120 starter kit and set about constructing a cabin (based loosely on the free WooWoo GT cabin plans we have on our website) with some lovely nautical touches like the portholes! The @Hotbox_SeaSauna project is based in Northern Ireland and was created by Carl and Anna – they wanted to enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea or lochs but needed the comfort of a traditional sauna afterwards! Having a sauna located in such beautiful, yet remote places made a composting toilet the natural choice, and the ideal solution was a WooWoo GT composting toilet.
