Yesterday at @matzehielscher’s Hotel Matze, the episode with Till Schweiger started with the question: „Clear thoughts or big feelings.“ Till Schweiger chose „big feelings“. I briefly asked myself why only the „either-or“ was possible and then realized that - for me - the order was not right. When you are asked “How do you feel about that?”, do you give a response that starts with “I think…” or “I feel…” followed by a thought? 🤔⠀ ⠀ It is really common to label your thoughts as feelings, but it is useful to understand why it is important to accurately label the emotions you are experiencing 🏷 ⠀ ⠀ Identifying the actual emotion and differentiating that from your thoughts will lead to managing them more effectively ✨⠀ ⠀ Let’s see an example: Your response to a situation might be “I feel I am not good enough”. In this case, both the thought and the feeling are masked.⠀ The thought is “I (think) am not good enough” and the feelings might be disappointment, sadness, or hurt.⠀ By labelling “not good enough” as a feeling, you accept that this is the way you feel, and therefore you are not able to change it. Whereas, understanding that this is the thought, you are able to challenge it and check its accuracy 🔎⠀ ⠀ There is a misunderstanding that the feelings we are experiencing are caused by external factors, but in reality, it is what we think about these situations that influence the way we feel, and thus to respond accordingly 🔁⠀ ⠀ In order to change the way we feel, we need to be more aware of what we are thinking 💭 #thoughtvsfeeling #changeyourmindset #negativethinking #automaticthoughts #feelings #intouchwithyourfeelings #feelingsarenotthoughts #mentalhealth #counsellingandpsychotherapy
