After a failed walk at The Blue Bell Wood, mummy tooks us to The Cotswold Distillery for snaccies. We ordered toasty sammiches. We got Cheese ‘n’ Ham and one filled with pastrami, emmenthal cheese and topped with sauerkraut and gherkins. And to wash it down we has A Summer Cup. It’s a gin thing, don’t you know. In the latest issue of @whisky_magazine I undertook one of my biggest research tasks to date to find out what is happening in the world of new make. Previously sat in the shadows of its older cousin, whisky, it seems that new make spirit is enjoying a revolution of sorts with new bottlings, projects and experiments happening behind the scenes. But I'm not just interested in what's new - I also took a look at how distilleries categorise their new makes (from language to numerical scales), ask how scaling up impacts new make production and taste four new makes from distilleries old and new. “Blood in The Cotswolds” - I’ve used the delicious @cotswoldsdistillery Amaro No. 1 as the sole base here, because it retains a lot of the whisky flavour profile from its main constituent (English Single Malt Whisky). It also has a lovely botanical depth of flavour, a touch of sweetness; then finally a perfectly subtle, bitter finish. I’ve used it in a kind of blood orange whisky sour, whilst also adding some special reserve port into the mix. The result has whispers of a NY Sour, but much more bittersweet and complex. Very enjoyable! Method and ingredients below: - 45ml Amaro No. 1 @cotswoldsdistillery 15ml Special Reserve Port @cockburns_port 22.5ml Lemon Juice 7.5ml Blood Orange Syrup @monin_europe 3 dashes Orange Bitters @angosturahouse - Shake all ingredients with ice until well chilled, then fine strain into an Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice. So, I just have to take a minute to boast about this Distillery. This place is amazing! The staff was so friendly and accommodating. Experimented with the @cotswolds_distillery Espresso martini spirit last night. I added a shot of espresso, a double of the spirit and a dash of their cream liqueur to a shaker full of ice and gave it a jolly good shake like I was Tom Cruise in Cocktail.
