MIND MANGLER: MEMBER OF THE TRAGIC CIRCLE 🎭 Palace Theatre, Manchester - If you came looking for a laugh, Mind Mangler, in a direct transfer from London’s west end, is certainly the place to be, as the latest export from Mischief Theatre displays a glorious mix of comedy, pastiche and genuinely impressive magic and mentalism for a thoroughly entertaining night. As with previous projects, members of the team have the audience engaged before the show has even started, the distinction that sets this one apart though is how the audience participation and interactions contribute to the performance itself, with secrets written on slips of paper to delve into, a locked safe at the front of the stalls giving us a chance to guess its combination, and a Rubik’s cube themed interval activity, the purpose of which transpires over the course of the second act. Henry Lewis and Jonathan Sayer, part of the writing team, combine masterfully on stage once again, most notably showing off their terrific improvisation abilities, and riffing brilliantly on the various exchanges with the audience, not only having these shape and structure the performance itself, but building a wonderful sense of rapport throughout. In any other show, an interjection from a spectator would be an unwelcome hindrance, however Lewis and Sayer take it in their stride to hilarious effect. The structure is semi-acted out, as Lewis and Sayer portray fictional versions of themselves, with a fully devised prior relationship proving to be the backbone of the show. The interactions with the crowd though are genuine, and the reactions from the two are certainly not staged, in particular a suggestion of Lewis acting like a “shovel-nosed guitar fish” left both performers in a state of dumbfounded delight, clearly struggling to restrain themselves from bursting into fits of laughter, which was a joy to behold. Tennessee Williams’ best known work had a recent London revival at the Phoenix Theatre, however exorbitant ticket prices prevented any chance of seeing the show.
