// Reading Sessions // This month we read one short story, one play and one novella at LTG Repertory, we started with: 1. The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World, a short story written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It tells the tale of a dead body found on the shore of a small fishing village. The man, whom the villagers name Esteban, is unusually tall and so shockingly handsome that the villagers-first the women, then the returning men-begin to essentially fall in love with him, treating him with religious reverence, and adopting him into their families. Eventually they dump the body into the sea, but leave it unweighted in the hope that Esteban will float back someday. They vow to transform the village into the kind of place worthy of Esteban. This story falls within the genre of magic realism. 2. Evam Indrajit, a play written by Badal Sircar. This is a play about the mediocre class. It is a conversation between the writer and the protagonist Indrajit, who is introduced as 'and Indrajit' because he is part of society rather than having an identity of his own. It is perceived as an Absurd Play such as Eugène Ionesco's Amédée or Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in the context that it portrays the emptiness and repetitiveness in the pattern and conformity of the modern society. The play subtly points towards Sartrean Existentialism. It denotes that life is a circle with no end, it ends where it begins, it is an endless road. 3. Animal Farm, a novella written by George Orwell. It is a satirical allegorical novella, in the form of a beast fable. It tells the story of a group of anthropomorphic farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. What follows are the reactions of the family, a town, and outside visitors. This story falls within the genre of magic realism. 2. Aisa Kehte Hai, a play written by Manav Kaul. This play is a story within the framework of a love story which comprises various characters like two circus artists who are on the run from an inspector after trying to steal a lion, a tea shop owner and his assistant Chai who play innocent pranks to entertain themselves. A man who has resolved to commit suicide encounters a 'professional' who offers to help him with the act, and you meet a crow facing an acute existential crisis while living amidst his family of pigeons. 3. Metamorphosis, a novella written by Franz Kafka. It tells the story of salesman Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself inexplicably transformed into a huge insect and subsequently struggles to adjust to this new condition.
