Hoodoo Fix An Tricks: Solomon's Seal Root by Neal Ocampo polygonatum biflora, convallaria multiflorum, convallaria polygonatum Solomon's Seal plant is a woodland perennial commonly found in the Southeastern United States and has native varieties in Europe and Asia. Its name was derived from the circular depressions formed on the rhizomes that resemble the Seal of Solomon or the Star of David. Others say that the cut root resembles the Hebrew alphabet. This imaginative observation made the root of the plant desirable for rootwork. Due to its association with the wise King Solomon from the Hebrew Bible, people believe that bearers of the root are protected from any kind of evil work and entities. Burning the root with bay leaves and mint leaves could also help one make wise decisions in career, business, legal concerns, and family matters (except in marital choices, though). Pounded fresh roots could also be applied topically to fade blemishes, bruising, wound scars, and related skin problems. Because of this, some rootworkers use its root in beauty, glamour, attraction, and even lust spells traditionally empowered by biblical passages from Songs of Solomon. Not to mention King Solomon's beauty during his time, as he had acquired seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, was just irresistible. To gain respect and favor and draw success and friendship, make a mojo bag containing Solomon's Seal root, devil's shoestring root, dragon's blood resin, frankincense resin, five-finger grass, John the Conqueror root, and Master of the Woods leaves. Based on traditional applications by Native American tribes, root doctors also use it as an astringent to ease an upset stomach and menstrual discomforts. The root also has other therapeutic properties, such as promoting healthy tissue repair and supporting bone and cartilage health. Hoodoo Fix An Tricks: Red Brick Dust by Neal Ocampo This mineral curio is beneficial and efficient in creating protective boundaries before performing spellwork, rituals, seance, etc., and psychic or energetic walls and barriers to keep your house or space safe, secure and private. Red brick dust is considered to be one of the most powerful mineral curios used for protection and to ward off evil spirits, nasties, and bad jujus, popularly used in Louisiana Voodoo, Hoodoo tradition, and ancient magic. The origin of its magical usage can be traced back to the Kongo use of "tukula" - a red pigment consisting of iron oxide-rich clay. Tukula was sparingly applied on the stomach mound, beard, and chest of Kongo power figures. I use red brick dust in Business Money floor wash which I usually make by mixing it with cinnamon powder, sugar, and Chinese Wash or Pine-Sol. Once the floor wash is prepared, I scrub the office doorstep or shop inward for quick continuous cash inflow. The reddening is also customary incorporated in a powerful Home Protection scrub. This is done by urinating at your doorstep and then washing it with water mixed with holy water and protection oils such as Fiery Wall of Protection, Run Devil Run, Cast Off Evil, or Van Van oil, or by washing your threshold with urine in a bucket of water then followed by sprinkling red brick dust mixed with ashes of name-paper of the Captain of the Police or graveyard dirt collected from a soldier, policeman, fireman or a vital family member's grave. In Hoodoo, practitioners believe that the older the bricks are, the better. I got my red brick in Fort Santiago, Intramuros, an ancient fortress in Manila built in 1590 and renovated in 1733. We add this mineral curio to our Fiery Wall of Protection and Law Keep Away formula. African American Folkways: Spiritual Bathing Rite by Neal Ocampo Spiritual baths are an essential Hoodoo way to cleanse the mind, spirit, and body and change one's luck from bad to good. Spiritual or ritual baths are as old as humanity and have been featured in many cultures and religions worldwide. We can assume that, as far as Hoodoo is concerned, spiritual baths come from two primary sources: Judeo-Christian ritual bathing or immersion and West Central African spiritual baths. In Yoruba religion, spiritual washes or baths are done to remove spiritual pollution from one's head or "ori" (the locus of personal destiny) through the utilization of sacred herbs called "ewe" and other organic ingredients. According to my mentor and soon-to-be godparent in Ifa, cleansing one's ori is called "Ori Owun Aweda" (Cleansing the Head). It is a straightforward but powerful ritual that can be done to connect with one's ori while ritually cleansing and feeding it. To perform this, often the head or ori is washed in a specially prepared "omiero" with ingredients specifically divined by a "babalawo." Omiero comes from two Yoruba words: "omi" which means water, and "ero" which means antidote. There are various ways of making omiero. It depends on the purpose, which "Orisha" the omiero is for, and your level of initiation. Hoodoo Spiritual Baths As this type of bathing is a ritual, it can be made more effective by giving a meaningful structure. In Hoodoo, three ingredients or, in some cases, three-times-three (nine) ingredients are traditionally added to the bathwater. These add to the sensate experience, but their magical and spiritual properties are also often absorbed through the skin and have specific physical effects such as blood flow and inner bodily heat. Entirely what these additives or ingredients are will depend on the spiritual work. How Do Conjure Workers Consecrate And Charge Their Tools? by Neal Ocampo Hoodoo is a form of natural magic, so we, conjure workers, believe that tools and other curios are inherently powerful, and they do not have any need for consecration, charging, and empowerment. Conjure workers also do not rely on Neo-pagan ritual implements or tools such as a cauldron, athame, wand, etc., unlike other magical traditions. What most of us use in our work are household items like saucers, kitchen knives, scissors, pins, needles, etc. However, we bless our talismans and amulets by dressing them with oils, reciting prayers, and smoking them with incense to activate their purpose. In Hoodoo, tools and other curios are considered 'living' because they perform acts customarily ascribed to living things. They do work for us! Hoodoo, as we all know, is also a blend of African and Native American animism, so most folks in the tradition believe all things have life, have consciousness and spirit force of their own. Even natural, non-sentient things like lodestones, pyrites, alum crystals, magnetic sand, salt, etc., are believed to be alive or conscious. Everything is imbued with consciousness and spirit force of its own. The only difference between a living and a so-called non-living thing is that in non-living objects, the spirit force is too subtle to be detected by our physical senses. Hoodoo Fix An Tricks: Sassafras Bark Of Root by Neal Ocampo The aromatic Sassafras bark and root were once the main ingredient in old-fashioned traditional root beers. In Hoodoo, it is primarily used to draw good fortune in money matters, mainly through business success and the steady increase of wealth. Sassafras is an important plant to many Native Americans of the Southeastern United States and was used for many purposes, including culinary and medicinal purposes. Choctaw people call it "kvfi" while Timucua people call it "pauane." Some folks in the olden days consumed it to improve blood circulation, promote healthy digestion, and more. In modern times, sassafras is primarily used in topical application for external skincare and sore muscle preparations. In this manner, the bark orroot can be steeped in oil and used in rub-downs or massages, especially when doing work related to money and finances. Some sassafras available in herbal shops are the whole, unprocessed form, which contains safrole - healthcare practitioners consider this unsafe as a food. A strong Money-Holding mojo hand utilizes sassafras root chips by sprinkling them to an alligator foot holding a Mercury dime coin, and putting them in a green flannel bag. To make someone pay what they owe you and protect yourself from unpaid debts, loans and receivables, mix sassafras root, comfrey leaves, bayberry root, calamus root, and clove pods, then get two things from the person borrowing money from you: a hair strand from their head and their complete name written on a piece of paper in their own handwriting. American African Folkways: Spiritual Foot Washing by Neal Ocampo Spiritual foot-washing is a traditional Christian Hoodoo rite offered by conjure workers to lighten one's mental, emotional, and spiritual loads and cleanse one from crossed conditions and messes thrown by enemies. Some major Protestant churches, like The Church of God and Saints of Christ, Primitive Baptist Church, and African Methodist Episcopal congregations, are known to do this as part of their religious rituals, especially every Maundy Thursday. Spiritual workers and other Christians perform this ritual differently, but the purpose remains the same. Foot-washing originated from ancient Israel; Jews, like all other Oriental people, wore sandals and usually were barefoot inside the house, so washing the feet was necessary. Hence, among the Jews, the host was obliged to give his guest a bowl or basin of water to refresh and clean his feet; failure to do this was a sign of inhospitality. In the New Testament era, Jesus' gesture toward his disciple became a significant spiritual act since it was never seen before that a master washed the feet of his servants. Jesus humbled himself to his disciples through the foot-washing ritual, which did not make him 'lesser' in any way, shape, or form. His humility was a sign of divine servitude for the early Christians. Spiritual foot-washing can be an emotional experience. Most of my clients sob and cry during the entire ritual. Crying is an excellent way to release emotions, to purge oneself of all past mistakes, stress, frustration, anxiety, fear, and drama. Crying is not a sign of fragility; it makes someone stronger because when every tear has been shed, the sense of relief and renewal fight the pain. How Can We Recognize A True Spiritual Worker? by Neal Ocampo The hallmark of false practitioners is to share with other people, not necessarily spiritual truths but rather their opinions, vendetta, personal accusations, and altercations. Unfortunately, these types are often successful because people don't bother to check the character of the individuals speaking and the spiritual paths these people are following for themselves. For clients, patients, beginners in magic and esoterica, and experienced practitioners alike, it is critically important to have clear guidelines for accepting a spiritual worker as authentic and when not. Cruise the social media sites, and you will see endless arguments and fights among practitioners from different religions and spiritual paths and various self-proclaimed teachers, each making endless charges and allegations that are often unfounded and based on mere opinion instead of genuine non-religious spirituality. One of the saddest things about the community today is that people have resorted to bigotry and personal assault tactics when disagreeing with others. And instead of employing the method of taking a couple of witnesses to discuss with people respectfully, they simply post vicious gossip and slander all over the internet in hopes of turning others against them. You will know these types when you come across them because they stand out like sore thumbs! Folks, please continue to be aware of lies and deceptions offered by the many false practitioners and charlatans today, and begin exploring and walking your path for yourself, WITH RESPECT! Stop following 'man' and start following your spiritual community - your guides and Highest Ideals; nothing else matters. If something doesn't align perfectly with your higher consciousness, it isn't of your God. Hoodoo Fix an Tricks: Black Snake Root by Neal Ocampo Also known as black cohosh root, it has tall white feathery racemes or flower spikes and thick knobby roots that resemble rattlesnake's rattle or scorpion sting; that is why it is also called rattlesnake root. It is highly protective and lucky. Hoodoo practitioners add some root chips to floor wash or sprinkle them on the floor and sweep them into the yard. They also mix black snake roots in their bathwater to kill an unwanted suitor's love or controlling or possessive infatuation for you or ward off snakes, both literally and figuratively. One can also carry the chips in a mojo hand with licorice root, and a red string knotted nine times and wear it at your waist. They are also utilized in sachets for love. Those who are known to be working on employing this root have tendencies to be really envious of people who would try to steal their lovers. This root won't hesitate to bite or sting someone, just like an agitated rattlesnake or scorpion, given the wrong circumstances. Too much manipulation of this root, though can cause aggression and thus can easily make others commit a crime together. So, use this curio wisely and responsibly. Putting black snake root in a small bottle of Hoyt's Cologne, carrying it on you for three days, then burying the bottle at your doorstep would ensure luck in the home. In other's respect, burning the root with the unwanted tenant's hair particles, placing the ashes in a jar, and burying the jar in a graveyard would make the renter move out. According to some midwives conjure women, black cohosh can be used at the end of a pregnancy to help ripen the cervix. It has also been used with other herbs to terminate an unwanted pregnancy in the first month or two. Thus, anyone who is pregnant should stay away from it. Traditional midwives also prescribe it for menopausal distress and menstrual discomfort. It can also ease hot flashes, nervous irritability, and mild mood changes accompanying menopause. Cherokee and other Native American ethnic groups use this root to promote joint comfort for respiratory health. #onlyattcd #tcdworks #tcdreads #conjure #conjurework #hoodoo

African American Folkways: Candle Burning And Ministry by Neal Ocampo Folk Judeo-Christian magic is hard to imagine without candles. We use them often for a variety of spiritual and magical purposes. This week, for example, we did our traditional ancestral veneration, and for hours a memorial candle shed its light in our home to remind us of their ongoing presence in our lives. At the saints' feasts, it has long been customary for us practitioners to light offertory or votive candles to recall the memory of the holy people. During the day of uncrossing a client experiencing a complex and challenging adverse situation, a single, long-burning fixed candle illuminates the darkness in the client's life created by crossed conditions such as trauma, serious illness, and spirit attachments. But symbols are malleable, and candles in Judeo-Christian magic are also made to express transitions. Thus, spellcasting or working is set apart by the lighting of candles. Whether one or seven, wax or oil, the flame burns evenly and quietly on the wicks symbolizing to a tee the sacredness and tranquility of the activity. Just like in prayer and sometimes, even in meditations, spells and rituals begin with lighting candles to mark the transition from profane to sacred time, from mundane to spiritual, from darkness to light. Candle shops eventually surfaced as successful Hoodoo enterprises specializing in manufacturing, selling, and supplying conjure or spiritual candles. Most candle shops were owned by companies that distributed other spiritual supplies, such as condition oils and sachet powders. Due to this, candle burning became one of the fashionable and sought-after magical techniques employed in root doctoring. 💡 A USEFUL TIP 💡 As a USEFUL TIP for all the people who want to avail of a magical or spiritual service, be smart customers. Ask the practitioner what they are practicing and always research if the elements in their workings align with what they claim they practice. Do not rely too much on their social media posts and flowery words. Whenever possible, always do research and read articles from many sources, as they can provide more credible information and sometimes suggest reasons why you should and should not pursue a particular spellcaster. So, we ask that as you read through our page and other spiritual shops’ or practitioners’ pages, please don't blindly believe what we espouse; rather, seek your spiritual community (spirit guides, angels, deities, Holy Spirit, or God) and use lots of discernment, and then make up your mind. #onlyattcd #tcdworks #tcdreads #conjure #tcdteam #spellcasting #spellworks #authenticspellcasting #conjure #rootwork #brujeria #diwataan #filipino #filipinoesotericism

Authentic spellcasting is not all about copying specific symbolism and magical correspondence (herbs, candle colors, incense, minerals, etc.) you see in other practitioners’ workings or even books that aren't even from your own tradition or practice to make money. Spell crafting and casting has spirituality! Unfortunately, they are currently missing in overly commercialized spell casters now, as spirit working is being removed, disregarded, or ignored by these unknowing merchants who simply want to profit from a purely “spiritual” practice, thus reducing spellcasting to just a plethora of recipes and tricks that devoid of spirituality. Magic is more than energy working. Yes, it is indeed energy work but with extra. The spirits should always have a part in your works, which we believe gives our energy work more power and potency. As human beings, we can't just utilize all our personal energy because we aren't as dynamic and powerful as the spirits are. One needs assistance from a spirit of prosperity if an already wealthy client asks for more money. One needs to invoke a spirit of love to fix a relationship problem. Even the great magicians and sorcerers in the history of humanity knew how to conjure spirits when performing magic. Humans are imperfect, as are our energies. We lack many things, and we cannot give what we don't have. An aid from the spirit world will make magic possible then. The Crystal Diva is doing our best to retain and preserve the customs and magical traditions of different cultures we are immersed in, such as Conjure, Rootwork, Brujeria, Pow Wow, Diwataan, and even Filipino Esotericism, to avoid unnecessary conflict with the spirit world and the community and prevent people from labeling us scammers and our practice as mere trying-hard copycats or cultural misappropriation. #onlyattcd #tcdreads #tcdteam #spellcasting #spellworks #authenticspellcasting #conjure #rootwork #brujeria #diwataan #filipino #filipinoesotericism

CONJURE TRUTES: Do you cast Love Spells? by Neal Ocampo Love spells to make individuals you don't know personally fall in love with you is a very dangerous, deceitful, and manipulative magic. When you cast a spell on strangers or perform some trick against their will (as the initial psychic reading reveals) to manipulate, control, or deceive them, you are doing the same as if you took the regular mundane route to manipulate, abuse, and control another person. And when you manipulate someone, if you make them think or feel something they haven't perceived naturally, or they disagree with within their heart, they would eventually find out that there is no foundation for that affection or thought. It is just nothing but an infatuation, not real love - which usually occurs when the effect of magic is starting to wane, vanish or disappear. When that happens, they would become mentally imbalanced and/or emotionally unstable, become someone they aren't because they don't know how to include and combine the past and present selves to come up with the way they are now (which is impossible because of that unnatural additional thought and fake emotion to their mind). Or they would find out what you have done, and everything you have built before, during, or after that has anything to deal with that person would implode. Magic isn't a candy machine or a toy; it's not a tool to only get what you selfishly desire regardless of what the Divine and spirits have told us during readings and the feelings or thoughts of anyone else. So what kind of love spells do you cast? We cast love spells on targets whom the client knows 'personally' and that they wish to have him or her drawn to them. Sometimes, the client will have no specific person in mind, simply a desire for new love, so we also perform love attraction spells on their behalf. AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLKWAYS: Sweetening Spells: Honey, Sugar, And Other Sweeteners by Neal Ocampo Sweetening spells are employed in Hoodoo when you want someone to be sweet to you, that is: - To favor you. - To like you. - To love you. - To marry you. - To stay with you. - To return to you. - To reconcile with you. - To hire you. - To give you a raise. - To promote you at work. - To influence your boss. - To influence your colleagues. - To speak kindly to you. - To treat you kindly in public. - To stop talking behind your back. - To cease anger, jealousy, and hatred against you. - To influence your in-laws. - To attract money. The sweeteners used in these spells vary by period or era, country region, commercial or homemade availability, family traditions, cultural customs, and spiritual guidance. I have known many practitioners from around the globe who use different kinds of sugary products! Here are some sweet samplings: - Honey - White sugar - Washed sugar - Brown sugar - Muscovado - Molasses - Sorghum syrup - Sweetened water - Crystal syrup - Maple syrup - Pancake syrup - Corn syrup - Jams and jellies - Chocolate syrup - Chocolate bars - Candies - Sweet chewing gum - Marshmallows - Bakers' and sugar confections - Ice creams - Soda or soft drinks - Fruit juices and nectars - Sugar alcohols - Dextrose powder - Liquid dextrose - Stevia - Artificial flavorings Sweetening spells are commonly worked inside containers such as bottles, jars, and boxes. Still, some are also often worked out loose with or without the additional use of candles, with or without added herbs or minerals, and with or without added powders or oils. The use of honey and other sweeteners in Hoodoo magic can be traced back to different cultures and religions, specifically, West African, European, and Judeo-Christian, which we know by now, contributed to a lot of different beliefs and practices in Conjure and Rootwork. AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLKWAYS: Suffumigation Or Censing by Neal Ocampo So let's start our discussion with some basic terminologies one would encounter when talking about incense. The common English words for covering a person or place of incense smoke are incensing and censing. If the censing is performed to drive out diseases or evil spiritual entities, it may also be called fumigation. Censing a place or location is sometimes called suffumigation. However, in old-time Southern usage, censing or fumigating is also called 'smoking,' while those with a Native American background refer to it as 'smudging.' The use of the term smudging has also been adopted in some forms into several modern belief systems. As far as we know, the use of incense in Hoodoo, as we see it now, derives from four primary origins: Central West African herbal smoking, Native American smudging practices, biblical incense offering, and concepts from Eastern traditions such as Folk Chinese religions and Hinduism. Herbal smoking in Africa is still one of the many methods to prepare and administer medications for physical and spiritual illnesses. Dried plants are usually burned, and their charcoals are used in healing and divinatory rites. Traditional healers are also known to crudely prepare cigars containing dried plant materials. There are also known tribes in Africa that bless and use leaves to create cleansing smoke. They usually utter their native prayers or sing praise songs to dispel invocations and negativity from their sacred space. On the other hand, ritual smoking before performing any spiritual works was learned and adapted from Native Americans by the early root doctors. Cedar, sweetgrass, tobacco, and white sage are just a few North American fauna Hoodoo practitioners use in their workings. Despite being referred to as 'smudging' by many spiritual workers, the herbs used in the Hoodoo tradition are more akin to 'smoke cleansing.' CONJURE TRUTES: Can We Alter Family or Old-Fashioned Recipes? by Neal Ocampo My teachers' and mentors' spiritual supplies recipes are Conjure and Rootwork treasures for me. They are botanical-scented and magical-infused heirlooms that draw all their students and family members together and give us a common purpose: to keep our teachers' spiritual supplies preparation tradition alive, no matter how times change or Hoodoo magic evolves. Family or traditional recipes are more than the ingredients and the compounding, blending, and other preparations that go into making them. They are memories, histories, and the individuals who first made them for their families or community. In my case, the conjure oils and some other spiritual products transport me right back to my teachers' altar space (and their teachers' place as well, and to their ancestors'). And in the making of them every month, I and my clients can hear their voices as we dab our wrists with oil, sprinkle bath crystals into our bathwater, or use powders to dress our candles. Making and employing the spiritual supplies almost physically conjures up my mentors and their ancestors. Still, times - and magic - changed. Suppose your teacher has used Rose Otto or Attar of Roses to make his Come to Me conjure oils, for instance. In that case, you might opt for something less Rose Otto-ish, like Rose Geranium oil or Wisteria oil, since Rose Otto is so expensive, unaffordable, and impractical for most people. Or suppose your mentor has used the endangered Adam and Eve root for blending Marriage oil. In that case, you might substitute High John the Conqueror root with Queen Elizabeth root since the former botanical curios are challenging to obtain. FAST READ: How About Nonconsensual, Manipulative, And Execration Spells? by Neal Ocampo Hoodoo is a well-recognized magical tradition that condones, tolerates, and even sometimes promotes nonconsensual spells. Its adherents even utilize and prescribe spiritual supplies for domination, control, and enemy works. Because of this, it is very likely for people to question if it is unethical for a conjure worker to cast a spell on someone without their permission? Every practitioner has to come to their own terms on permission, consent, and such. However, unlike in many Neo-pagan traditions, one rather extreme answer that a practitioner of Hoodoo would give to you would be: "not at all." A less extreme position would be that while casting spells against other people's will is always pro-tanto wrong, other moral, spiritual, and divinatory considerations can sometimes outweigh the pro-tanto wrongness of manipulative or nonconsensual magic. People from different religious and magical traditions might think it is always wrong. Nonetheless, in Hoodoo tradition, conjure workers are known to weave spells or put roots on someone even if their target doesn't know they're being worked on. Some countervailing moral factors might sometimes suffice to justify casting spells against others' will on balance. What might such factors include? One obvious candidate would be consequences. For example, the fact that a mother's successful manipulation of her son's resistant attitude and disreputable behavior through the Cast Off Evil spell would save her boy's life. Other factors might also be thought to be countervailing considerations like the intentions. Perhaps the immorality of the son's character, or the fact that he is acting on an evil desire or intent, is a countervailing factor that can outweigh the wrongness of his mother's manipulation. So are we admitting that manipulation is wrong? Hoodoo Fix an Tricks: Whiskey by Neal Ocampo Conjure workers value this sought-after distilled alcoholic beverage as sacred or special water in its own right. It is made from a fermented grain mash of barley, corn, rye, or wheat. Whiskey or Whisky is used in the practice of Hoodoo just like how the Florida Water, Kananga Water, Hoyt's Cologne, and urine are also used in work to cleanse and baptize tools and curios such as candles, shells, stones, roots, bones, sticks, etc. and feed mojo hands, jack balls and lodestones. This practice has its roots from the Guinea Coast of Africa. Hoodoo, as we all know it, draws from folk medicine, which used to be the standard medicine many years ago. Whiskey tinctures are part of the old-time Hoodoo curative practice and lasted until this century. There are many recipes for herb-dosed Whiskey, of which the patient or client takes a teaspoon daily. Examples of these alcohol preparations are: - To increase male nature, put juniper berries in Whiskey. - To increase female nature, put angelica root in Whiskey. - For protection, put devil's shoestring root in Whiskey. - For love-jinx removal, put calamus root in Whiskey. Graveyard dirt has been used by many Hoodoo practitioners to cause harm or unnatural diseases to one's enemies and also for ancestral work. Traditional ways of paying for graveyard dirt vary from worker to worker, but it is very important to get in touch with the spirit of the dead and make a respectful transaction and payment. People also use Whiskey in their baths and other cleansing herbs, liquids, and minerals. Not only is whiskey used for spiritual cleansing, but some people believe it has strong disinfectant properties that can cleanse the skin by removing bacteria and dirt. People mix Whiskey, Rose Water, and fresh juicy aloe leaves in their bathwater to eliminate any negativity caused by the evil tongue. A SHORT READ: How To Interpret Omens? by Neal Ocampo An omen (also called portent or presage) is an occurrence or incident that foreshadows a favorable or unfavorable issue in a certain state of affairs. The belief in wonders and signs is closely connected with divination and magic. For some people, interpreting omens requires neither higher inspiration nor special knowledge. I, on the other hand, believe it still needs divine or spiritual guidance to be able to understand the complete message behind it. The principal characteristic of the omen is the happenstance of the phenomenon or the event, which, most of the time, carries no significant value or apparent causal connection. Enslaved ancestors generally agreed with originating and preserving signs and omens, which occupied a real place in their lives. Here are some of the most prevalent omens believed by rural Black people: * If your right-hand itches, you will receive money. If your left-hand itches, you're going to pay out money. * If a child cries continuously, a close relative will die soon. * If you break a mirror, you will have seven years of bad luck. If the mirror breaks itself, a close relative will die. * If the right side of your nose itches, a strange woman comes to the house. If the left side of your nose itches, a strange man comes to the house. * If the spoon drops while you are eating, expect someone hungry is coming. Other omens include natural phenomena, for example, an eclipse, the appearance of stars and planets in heaven, abnormal births of animals and humans, unusual growth of plants and trees, and behavior of the sacrificial animal on its way to the slaughter. The interpretation would be based on the practitioner's intuition. So should we believe in these superstitious omens? A SHORT READ: Horseshoe by Neal Ocampo Horseshoes have long been considered auspicious in European cultures. Their fabrication, placement, and source are some factors to be considered if one wants them to use as good luck charms. Most rootworkers acquire our horseshoes straight from horse-race or polo clubs because we believe that the energy of the place it comes from adds more power to the object. Due to this association, the miniature horseshoe has become a gambler's lucky charm. On the other hand, other conjure workers prefer those found in the road or field - and not purchased. To some people, though, this is not really significant at all as what is essential is that the horseshoe was actually used - worn and discarded by a horse. In some traditions, horseshoes are hung on a door with two ends pointing up to attract good fortune, while in some cultures, horseshoes are hung points down or in a vulval position (as shown above) so the luck pours onto you or to bring protection. Horseshoes were originally made of iron, a material believed to ward off evil spirits, and traditionally were held in place with seven nails, seven being the luckiest number. Others said that horseshoes are considered lucky because they were made by blacksmiths, which is also considered a very lucky occupation in medieval times. One reputed origin of the tradition of lucky horseshoes is due to a Christian legend surrounding Saint Dunstan and the Devil. The story relates that the Saint once nailed a horseshoe to the Devil's hoof when he was asked to reshoe the Devil's horse. This caused the Devil great pain, and Dunstan only agreed to remove the shoe after the Devil promised he would never enter a household with a horseshoe nailed to the door. Furthermore, because horseshoes resemble horseshoe magnets, they are used in spellwork concerning money matters and business success. A SHORT READ: Mercury Dime by Neal Ocampo Coins, especially old ones or coins passed down from generation to generation; old coins from other countries; and non-monetary metal tokens are considered lucky in Hoodoo. But, there is a particular preference for the Mercury dime, silver dime, or Winged Liberty Head dime among experienced conjure workers. Silver dimes were issued between 1916 and 1945. Contrary to popular belief, the obverse depiction of the legendary figure there is not the Roman God, Mercury, but a young Lady Liberty, identifiable by her Phrygian cap with wings on the side, sort of like the style in which Mercury is sometimes depicted. In the eyes of some African-Americans and Hoodoo practitioners, they were still Mercury, the Roman God of financial gain, commerce, business, eloquence, communication, travel, luck, games of chance, and trickery. Therefore, it is still employed in money-drawing, business success, gambling, and safe travel works. Due to this, some Hoodoo men and women also found a sense of familiar comfort with him and, as a result, honored him or worked with him - I, myself included. Mercury governs most of those things I do and love: business, magic, the Internet, and trickery. In addition, a leap-year date on the coin is believed to be luckier than any other date due to its rarity. Some mojo makers prefer to use a leap-year dime combined with a two-dollar bill as their main ingredient. Traditional combinations incorporate some lucky curios such as nutmeg, lodestone, rabbit's foot, High John the Conqueror root, Lucky Hand root, horseshoe charm, four-leaf clover, and Swatiska charm. Mercury dimes are also very protective against foot-track magic. Some old conjure workers advise their clients to wear them as an anklet or put them inside one's shoes to fear not walking over evil. Other coins with heads are effective, too, especially those figures who died as national heroes. Review of of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is THE book I have been recommending to everyone since I first read it last year, and if you give it a chance, you will not be disappointed! This is a fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in a world with fae and magic and evil witches. We first meet Feyre as she hunts in the winter woods beyond her house, trying desperately to feed her family of two sisters and a father who is completely detached from the world. This desperation leads her to make a risky kill in the forest leading to her capture by the fae that live beyond the human realm. Unfortunately, the fairy lands have been cursed by an evil sorceress and Feyre's capture might be the first step in breaking the curse, but only if it can be achieved before the last rose petal falls...or something like that. Even if "fantasy" books are not your thing and you think the cover looks awful (it does), you have to give this book a try. It's more of a romance than it is a high fantasy but it still has wonderful world-building and fast-paced action. This isn't a book for teenagers either, there are some steamy scenes and some violence, but the plot and pacing will keep you turning the pages. If you do decide to step out of your comfort zone and pick it up, have the sequel at hand. This trilogy is one you won't be able to put down until it's over! Thanks for reading my review!
