Between 10-11 June 2023, I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer and participate in ChorusOZ, an annual event held by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. 800ish people met and rehearsed Mahler’s Symphony no 8 for the first time on the 10th and performed it in front of an audience on the 11th. Spending 2 full days in the most beautiful concert hall of the Sydney Opera House AND getting to sing there again. Loved every single minute of it! Some concerts are just more special than others. It’s when something extra connects with your being, your soul, and you just don’t want it to end. “Night of the Soul” was one of those concerts for me. Somehow healing in this hurt world we are living in. Some magic in the time of a plague. Some hope. This is Samuel Barber’s “Agnus Dei”, recorded by a friend (thank you Eric LG) at last night’s final performance. It is the centrepiece of “Night of the Soul”, and the pinnacle of the story woven through the show. It is my favourite piece from the show where I loved every single number. The music is still streaming through my mind like a miniature built in choir and orchestra. It was shortly after I returned home in 1994 that my sister received a letter. “I think this is for you” she said. Indeed it was. It was sent to the wrong sister. It was an invitation to audition for the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. And so began my membership of the Philharmonia family that has so far lasted 26 and a half years. It has seen us perform in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Perth, Orange, Birmingham, Worcester and London. Maybe a few others as well, but mostly Sydney. We were to have toured to UK and Germany last year, but a certain global pestilence put an end to that. We’ve had a difficult time in the arts of late … all I will say on the matter is, get vaccinated kids! For now, I hold on to the memories of concert tours like this one in 2010, when we sang on the opening night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. I’m afraid I don’t remember who took this photo … I’m in that sea of singers somewhere, so I know it wasn’t me. Day 15 - My proudest moment was…: Today marks the halfway point in the @selfemployedclub ’s 30 day challenge! It feels like a good time to use this reflective prompt and focus on something positive. 💛 I’m terrible at narrowing down choices and picking one thing over another; when the waiter comes over and asks if I’m ready, the answer is always “I just need another minute…” But this is one I feel confident in being proud of. When I moved to Sydney for three years, one of the first things I did was look for a great choir to join. I could not have found a better, lovelier or more talented group of people to share a stage with than this bunch - the Sydney Philharmonia Chamber Singers. I sang with them for two years, regularly performing in our home space at the Sydney Opera House (not a bad venue for our shows!). They are some of the happiest memories I have of my time in Oz. I will forever treasure our time singing together, and my time spent on one of the best stages in the world.

📍SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE CONCERT HALL A place where I was invited by a friend last year to Handel’s Messiah, a Sydney Philharmonia concert performed by majestic choir and orchestra, the final performance of its kind before the hall was closed for renovations. This was the first time I had been in the grand hall of the opera house, and even as someone who is no engineering / interior design / architecture student, you can't help but marvel at its structual beauty. From a high vaulted ceiling and birched timber paneling, it is truly an iconic Sydney landmark. I can only wonder how the renovations will improve it even further! Fun Fact: the Concert Hall is home to the world's largest mechanical tracker-action pipe organ, and there's only one person in the world who can tune it!

A work in 50 parts for 5 choirs, the Centre choir is on stage, and the North, South, East and West choirs are positioned high up behind the audience. Imagine being a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago in the 14th century. So many dangers on the road: “Inn keepers cheat us, the English steal. The devil waits at the side of the road …..” And then you reach the splendour of the Cathedral of St Mary of Burgos. When confronted with this incredible building, perhaps the medieval pilgrim will believe there is a god. British composer Joby Talbot has written a choral work about the Camino, “The Path of Miracles”. Nothing quite prepares you for the blur of silver whizzing over your head as the Botafumeiro swings in Santiago Cathedral. There’s no guarantee that it will be swung, so when the eight red-robed tiraboleiros step out to pull the ropes, the excitement is suddenly palpable, gasps audible. The botafumeiro reaches speeds up to 68 kms as it swings back and forth filling the cathedral with incense. And yet, time stands still. It makes you think it was worth walking 800km across the length of Spain on the Camino de Santiago.
