Proud to say I did the second half of the Reigate and Redhill music festival, and won all the categories I entered for (Recital, Opera, Oratorio, English Song, and Lieder). Though the feedback was very positive, there wasn’t anything given for me to work on long-term. as there has been with all other competitions I’ve done. I know I didn’t sing everything perfectly so I know what I need to work on in the songs, but it’s always good to get another external opinion! I think since day one of voice lessons, most of us have been told things like "don't push!" "never give more than 70%". But what does this even mean physiologically? Especially when you're young, strong, and can't tell the difference between pushing and just garden variety emotional intensity. It can feel very confusing. "Sing out", "Don't push", "You need to SUPPORT the phrase!" "Only sing on the interest!!" I mean, voice teachers, make. up. your. mind. LOL What normally happens.... A singer just defaults to their own physiological experience. If it doesn't feel hard or strained, why worry? The problem with this, is that young, strong-throated singers aren't being taught to feel and differentiate between the tiny adjustments of the vocal tract that assist a more efficient way of singing. It isn't until these extremely talented, strong-throated singers get older, that they start to feel the muscular involvement that was already present earlier. They become more aware. Then they feel their voice changed. But, it didn't really change. Their tolerance to pushing and muscular force changed. The larynx ossified and with it decreased the natural elasticity of cartilaginous structures. Without this extra elasticity, minute tensions are felt so much more acutely. So, what is pushing? 1. Too much breath pressure underneath the vocal cords, so that the vocal cords squeeze together more tightly to brace against the pressure. 2. Bringing up too much registrational weight (thick cord mass) too high in the scale. These are really 2 sides of the same coin. Often what happens is that the bigger structures (the head, neck, tongue, facial muscles, sternum, etc.) which should be "supporting" a free sound, are collapsed, out of alignment, or not engaged properly. This leads to tension in the larynx, mounting breath pressure and thus a push in the sound. The path to undoing this "pushing" is not a linear path. But, rest assured, it CAN be done! The real challenge is rewiring the mind and the inner ear to accept the new sounds and sensations and resisting the temptation to give more than is necessary.

While preparing the role of Giulio Cesare, I’m really enjoying exploring the different aspects of his character. Many people associate him with being the powerful and domineering Roman general. That’s true, but there is an aspect of him that’s less obvious, but is depicted several times: it’s his pensive side, when he ponders the fragility of life. I notice that Handel uses many accidentals (changes in notes) in order to depict this pensiveness. The result is that the music in those sections don’t end up being in a solid, stable musical key signature. It’s as if the musical earth under his feet is the least stable when Cesare is having his existential moments. This comes across especially in his recitativo accompagnato (recitative accompanied by orchestra), “Alma del gran Pompeo,” in which he eulogizes Pompeo (Pompey) after his brutal murder by Tolomeo (Ptolemy). This existential musical depiction, full of accidentals, also happens in the recitative before Cesare’s aria “Empio dirò tu sei,” which happens right after he receives Pompeo’s head on a silver platter from Tolomeo. It happens in the line when he says, in Italian: “Per dar urna sublime al suo cenere illustre, serbato sia sì nobil teschio.” (Translation: “Pompeo’s noble head will be cremated, and a lofty urn shall be prepared in which to keep his illustrious ashes.”) However, these musical depictions don’t only happen when mentioning Pompeo, but also towards the end of the opera. There, Cesare himself almost gets murdered. When Cleopatra asks him how he survived, accidentals are also used in his music, almost as if pondering the fact that he was somehow able to survive. The text there says: “Tempo avrò di svelarti ogni ascosa cagion del viver mio.” (Translation: “I shall have time to reveal to you every hidden reason for being alive.”) After all, both Cesare and Pompeo were Roman generals and statesmen, and Cesare almost had the same fate as Pompeo at that point of the opera: of being murdered by enemies. (The sculpture is “Julius Caesar,” by Andrea di Pietro di Marco Ferrucci.)

You know who my favorite kinds of voice students are to work with? Folks who sang in their youth - in choirs, shows, at church, wherever - and put it aside in adulthood, only to realize after many years that they want singing to be part of their life again. I LOVE helping them rediscover what their voices are capable of now. I also love working with folks with extensive musical experience other than singing, who want to sing formally for the first time. I have personal experience making the switch from long-time instrumentalist to vocalist - which is no small thing, so I totally get where these people are coming from. Whether you're someone who wants more hands-on knowledge for your music directing job, or you simply want to build a new musical skill - I'm your gal. And I love working with pro-track singers who are looking for just a few tweaks to take their singing from great to downright amazing. I'm a technician at heart, and I promise you I will have a unique perspective on *something* that you probably haven't considered before. I love these kinds of students because they're often really intrinsically motivated, and already have good vocal and/or musical building blocks from their previous (or current) experience - because what I excel at as a teacher is helping singers who are already pretty good to be excellent. I also love working with these singers because they have strong personal reasons for dedicating themselves to music. Every musician has reasons, of course, but it's the ones whose reasons are deeply rooted who actually take action and invest heavily in the process - and they see the results. Because oh boy do we get results. The sounds that occur in my studio just blow me away sometimes. I teach in-person in my home studio north of Boston, as well as online, and have a handful of openings this summer to work with students just like these. Is this YOU?
