[Hover-Vehicle Outside Nightclub] by #sydmead (1968) "In an air-cushion vehicle has just halted on magnetic arrester plates outside a nightclub entrance that is guarded by a pair of scene-stealing 'pets'. The vehicle's hull (a favorite shape of Mead's) incorporates top-to-bottom air ducting around the outside of the passenger capsule to supply the support system." Although the color saturation differs considerably from the actual original, we have recently enlarged and reproduced portions of newly discovered art from U.S. STEEL: INNOVATIONS (1968) and the art book SENTINEL (1979). The background of watercolor mixed with gazane and laid with a matière pattern was also characteristic of SYD in the late 60s, as seen in this INNOVATIONS at the top of the list. I finally got round to doing the final revised version of last week’s Blade Runner spinner sketches. Pen and marker pens on A2 paper. A bit of a mish mash of the bits I liked best from the three sketches. It’s not exactly groundbreaking, a spinner is a spinner, maybe I should have pushed the design envelope a little more, but I really enjoyed sketching again. I may do a final colour paintover in photoshop just to finish the process. A couple of weeks ago @georgehulldesign released a video of himself sketching one of his iconic spinner designs for Blade Runner 2049. This enthused me so much I got my own pens and markers out and did three spinners of my own in quick succession. It will soon be five years since Syd Mead's nearly two-year retrospective PROGRESSIONS TYO. In addition to the 50 works from his lifetime collection that have been touring North America since 2012, we have 150 works from our Movie Art, Japan Collection, and my private collections. The period was extended for two weeks, for a total of six weeks, attracting a total of 32,000 people.The catalogue collection sold out within two weeks of the exhibition. All kinds of goods were released, but since then, SYD books and goods have become even more difficult to obtain, and prices have more than doubled even for used goods.
