Good afternoon (these are getting later and later)! This is the Turn A Gundam, and yes, it is WEIRD. But it's weird for a reason! The design is supposed to look far beyond anything that anyone understood, because it IS. The story was originally supposed to be ridiculously far along the original Gundam timeline (Universal Century), but I'm not sure if that's canon anymore. Regardless: the story is that MANY wars have happened in the past, and folks are unearthing all sorts of war machines. The Turn A is the most advanced of them. I thought this was a weird one to add so early in the toyline, until I realised that Turn A started in '99. It was brand new at the time! Makes sense to make a figure of your current Gundam. They kinda went all out, too! It's got nice articulation for the time (mostly due to the slim design), and a sizeable amount of accessories. They made a Robot Spirits one that is impressive, but this still stands as a fun toy. The Turn A itself....man. You gotta watch the show to understand (I haven't even seen it all). The Turn A is what I said: FAR BEYOND. It's mostly hollow, so you can store all sorts of stuff in the chest (including a missile silo that I forgot to show). The "skin" of it is nanites, which, when released in a move called the "Moonlight Butterfly", can reduce anything and everything to dust. I won't say any more, but you can probably guess a few things once you watch the show. It's BONKERS. The Turn A Gundam, aka "Mustache Gundam!" My bro @thecalumity tore it up in Gundam Evolution using this suit. Personally, I think it's an interesting design. The way I customized these kits involves a special technique that gives them a wood like surface. I learned it from a modeler from Japan who was really willing to share his skills and knowledge in this hobby. When I first tried using technique, I felt comfortable doing it and thought that maybe I should incorporate it in every model kit that I customize. If people will see these kits, they would probably recognize who made them since I am a modeler who likes to use this technique. I was once called the “Wood Guy” in an event where I brought entries mostly consisting of woodplas. It felt great, it made me have my sense of identity in this hobby. I guess it made me feel that I should focus on something that I do best and try to enhance it more. Being able to incorporate wood like structure to these kits makes me think that Im able to give them their own sense of identity. A “Wood Guy” who loves his Woodplas. Can you believe Turn A turns (heh) 25 years old today? Can you believe I've cosplayed both Harry Ord and Kihel Heim multiple times over the past decade? I can't, yet here's photographic evidence of my insanity. I learned most of what I know now about sewing, wig styling, prop making and even makeup thanks to my stubborn zeal to cosplay these characters. To be quite honest, one of the big reasons I cosplayed Harry was because for many years I didn't think I was pretty and feminine enough to cosplay Kihel or Dianna, and I don't have anyone in my life that I can stuff into a costume and be my Harry... That said, I'm still proud that I've brought most of his crazy wardrobe to life. He's such an iconic character in both design and personality that it makes up for the fact that I had to "become the boyfriend" all these years. 🤣 As for Kihel, I cosplayed her for a similar reason: as a Harry cosplayer, I never found anyone who could be my Kihel/Dianna, and after much contemplation, I decided to just cosplay her myself. I figured it would be an interesting challenge to recreate her drill curls in a realistic manner rather than the cartoony and very heavy glue and wire contraptions I've seen other cosplayers make. Even without other materials, the wig was very cumbersome to wear, and when I decided to make her "as Dianna" in 2019, those wigs were also a hot mess especially out on the con floor. But at least the "marshmallow spacesuit" was fairly comfortable, and I'm happy with how it came out. As stressful as most of these costumes were to make and wear, I at least got to meet a few of industry people/celebrities and other, far superior cosplayers while wearing these silly getups, but I'll save those humblebrags for another post. This installment in the series from 1999 is such a beautiful and compelling story, with amazing characters, music, and some of my favorite mobile suits. Did you know the Turn A was designed by Syd Mead? And the character designer was Akiman! I highly recommend this anime, please check it out if you can! 🩷 At @luccacomicsandgames last year, I cosplayed Kihel Heim (or is it? 🫣) along with @oliviazira as Lily Borjarno.
