I was obsessing a bit with how I painted parts of my painting “Resonance”, the circle painting, and I wanted to bring that into this larger piece. I also loved this piece because it was playing with other favorites such as my black background with gold, and the fact that she is engulfing the whole canvas. It felt powerful, she felt powerful, and I believe it’s purely the size of the painting! I also wanted to incorporate another favorite season of mine. One of my favourite artists and photographers, the incredible Claude Cahun*. The way they look at the camera is just enchanting. We don’t know what they’re thinking, and this is part of the allure of Cahun’s work. Consistently unpredictable artistically, and consistently charming, Cahun made art to entrance and envelope the audience. It is no surprise that Cahun and their partner took part in a rebellion against the nazis, secretly publishing homemade pamphlets singing them off with: der Soldat ohne Namen (the soldier with no name). Both Cahun and their partner were arrested for undermining the German forces and were sentenced to death. Thankfully, they survived when the island was freed from Nazi occupation in 1945. *Cahun famously described themselves as having both genders, sometimes neither genders - an individual we would now probably describe as non-binary, hence why I’ve consistently used they/them pronouns for Cahun throughout this post. #claudecahun #surrealism #surrealists

And there is an art exhibit called “IMAGINE! 100 Years of International Surrealism” that is currently in Brussels, but will also travel to Paris, Hamburg, Madrid and Philadelphia to celebrate the centennial.
