Yesterday, we had a fantastic St. Paul’s Field Day with marvelous weather, a picnic lunch, face painting, relay races, agility challenges, and inflatable bounce houses. One of the best parts of Field Day is watching our middle school students step up as leaders and role models for our younger students. 1st-7th grade students also loved cheering on the graduating 8th grade class in their annual softball game against the St. Paul’s faculty/staff! Many thanks to our athletics teachers, Ms. McGee and Mr. Strookman, for putting together another fun Field Day! #stpaulskc #fieldday #letsgo #softballgame #sportsmanship #teamwork #endofthescshoolyear

We're celebrating Mr. Ted van Thullenar as he finishes up 37 YEARS teaching at St. Paul's! We're so grateful for his decades of commitment, compassion, and genuine care for our students. We hosted a reception for Mr. Van last week, and it was touching to see all the former faculty, alumni, and current parents who were there to tell Ted how much he means to our community. One of our former St. Paul's students said it best: "St. Paul’s won’t be the same without you. Hopefully whomever the torch is passed to, they will reflect the humor, compassion, strength, and integrity that you gave to both students and faculty daily." Let's all thank Mr. Van and wish him well as he starts his well-earned retirement! #stpaulskc #welovemrvan #lifeofservice #retirement #lastinglegacy

To wrap up their study of money and economics, 1st grade students created crafts, artwork, and services to sell on Market Day. Each student brought in $3 to spend on each other’s items and services (e.g. nail painting, painted rocks, bracelets, etc). This activity not only welcomes creativity and self-expression, it teaches students how to count money and work with a budget. Students also managed to make some tidy profits! It’s been a busy day in 5th grade! Students interviewed with parent volunteers for jobs in their big BizTown project. Now that interviews have been completed, students will be chosen for city positions before their field trip to BizTown in a few weeks. Later in the day, 5th graders got to explore the middle school during a scavenger hunt while getting to know some of the faces and places upstairs. It’s a big step for these kids, and we can’t wait to welcome them to the middle school next year! #stpaulskc #5thgrade #BizTown #interviews #sogrownup #middleschool

First grade students are becoming geography experts! They created map chains to show their knowledge of North America and our place on it all while learning about different mapping tools (i.e. globe, GPS, compass, etc.) They are also working on a Project Lead the Way STEAM exercise that challenges students to design the perfect shoe to help a traveler navigate through different world biomes. What a fun way to help students understand our world! #stpaulskc #firstgrade #geography #mapping #STEAM #projectleadtheway

Many thanks to St. Paul's alum, Max Wasserstrom '00, for stopping by middle school last week. Max shared about his time at KU where he studied Finance and Accounting, and gave students insight into his 13 years working in commercial real estate with Block Real Estate Properties. Max also had great advice telling students to get comfortable with being wrong and to focus on critical thinking. "Don’t just know the answer. Know how you got the answer." It was extra special to have Max's nephew and current 2nd grade student, George, there to hear the discussion! Thanks again for stopping by, Max! #stpaulskc #alumni #middleschoolchapel #specialguest #wordsofwisdom #twogenerationsofspartans

Last week, 2nd grade students made pork and cabbage dumplings as part of their study of Asian countries. Not only was this a fun (and tasty) activity, students are now excited for the next phase of their unit! Students will each choose a different Asian country to research, exploring the language, culture, and geography for a culminating presentation in just a few weeks! #stpaulskc #2ndgrade #lowerschool #asiaunit #researchproject #handsonlearning #yummy #dumplings

4th grade completed their Brain Games project this week! They worked in groups to create challenges and activities to test the different areas of the brain (e.g. occipital, parietal, frontal, cerebellum, etc.) Students had fun testing out activities including guessing jelly bean flavors, pouring beads with eyes closed, identifying animal sounds, jumping through hoops when dizzy, mirroring dance choreography, popping bubbles as fast as possible, and so much more! #stpaulskc #fourthgrade #lowerschool #braingames #scienceclass #coordination #memorization

It's #ThrowbackThursday and we went yearbook diving to see if we could find pictures of Chiefs pride from the St. Paul's of yesteryear. One thing is for sure, Chiefs pride has only grown at St. Paul's over the years! We couldn't resist sprinkling in some of the Chiefs love displayed in our hallways this week. Go Chiefs! #stpaulskc #ChiefsKingdom #superbowl #alumni #ChiefsLove #BiggestFansOfAllTime

Preschool students are soaring through their unit all about animal habitats! Using Jan Brett’s book The Mitten as inspiration, these little learners are exploring different animals’ characteristics and their homes. In addition to lots of craft projects, there has been lots of sensory learning with real bear pelts, skulls, and footprints. They have also been measuring and sorting animals into different categories. Our friends at Lakeside Nature Center even brought a few owls and a falcon for kiddos to see up close! 🦉🐻🦊🐭 Learn more about our preschool program at speds.org/preschool #stpaulskc #preschool #animals #exploringnaturing #crafting #earlychildhood #makingthemostofpreschool #sensorylearning

Go Spartans! Students, parents, and teachers had a blast at our spirit night for the girls' and boys' basketball games against Seabury Academy. Yesterday, kindergarten students traveled to the Kansas City Zoo with a backstage pass to visit the penguins! This is an exciting part of their penguin unit, in which they are learning all about this aquatic bird. Fun fact: A group of penguins in the water is called a raft but on land they're called a waddle! #stpaulskc #kindergarten #penguins #fieldtrip @kansascityzoo

After studying Andy Warhol's Pop Art and his famous portraits, 8th grade students picked their own famous person to celebrate with paint! They enlarged their posterized images using a grid system before painting with tints and shades to create these large scale artworks. Not surprising, there are quite a few Taylor and Travis representations. Students hope to get them done in time for the Super Bowl! #stpaulskc #middleschool #artclass #popart #andywarhol #gochiefs #superbowl #taylorandtravis

After working together for weeks to build their Changemaker Museum, 5th grade students presented on their individual figures for family and friends last week! Their big museum event featured a Changemaker timeline, map, speeches, and student-made artifacts representing the lives and work of influential figures like Buck O’Neill, Cesar Chavez, Amanda Gorman, Winston Churchill, Michelle Obama, George Washington Carver, the Wright brothers, Rosalind Franklin, and Mae Carol Jemison. Way to go, 5th grade! #stpaulskc #fifthgrade #lowerschool #changemakers #museum #groupproject #influentiallives
