Currently doing a buddy read with some of the fine folks over at the Richard Laymon book club. We’ve got a side hustle going with Lair, James Herbert’s sequel to The Rats. Really enjoyed the original, so let’s see how the second part holds up! I guess I’ll also consider this part of #oldschoolapril . I’m not really formally involved with that, but I think I’ll read old school horror all month, as if I really needed an excuse! 😂 anyone else doing old school April? #bookstagram #books #bookshelf #booknerd #bookgeek #bookaddict #horror #horrorbooks #horrornovel #currentlyreading #jamesherbert #lair #paperbacksfromhell #horrorpaperbacks #paperbackhorror #vintagehorrorbooks #vintagehorrorpaperbacks #signethorror

Carter is the queen of the subversive, and her feminist retellings of these classic tales are more urgent today than ever before. Evil computer babies? David Shobin’s “The Unborn”(1981) —1982 First MMPB printing by Bantam Books —Cover art by Fred Marcellino Written by a physician, “The Unborn” is a pseudo-science horror novel about a creepy baby and a malevolent computer. There’s a heavy focus on medical practices and the rise of technology, which seems to fit in perfectly with novels like “Jurassic Park.” The book recieved a rave review from Stephen King, reading: “If there’s going to be an occult bestseller this year, this is surely it! Here are two from the master of extreme horror! “Bite”(1996) —1999 Leisure printing “Tread Softly”(1987) —1987 TOR printing —Cover art by Jill Baumen Reading Laymon has been a weird journey for me. I started with “The Woods are Dark,” which truly surprised me. Next, I frantically read through “The Beast House” series, following those up with “One Rainy Night,” which I devoured and loved. Then I got to “Tread Softly,” which I didn’t particularly enjoy or connect with. Something felt weirdly uneven in this one, and I think the moment the families returned home, I was taken out of the story. However, I abosuletly love the original cover, but my favorite edition is this one with cover art by the amazing Jill Baumen. Also, “Tread Softly” was originally published under the pseudonym Richard Kelly, and it was eventually republished with the title “Dark Mountain.” I haven’t yet read “Bite,”, but I would like to soon. I love the cover art on this edition! #Bite #TreadSoftly #DarkMountain #RichardLaymon #RichardKelly #Horror #HorrorBooks #HorrorFiction #HorrorPaperbacks #HorrorCovers #HorrorCoverArt #RetroPaperbacks #VintageBooks #RetroHorror #RetroHorrorBooks #RetroHorrorPaperbacks #RetroHorrorArt #MassMarketHorror #HorrorMassMarket #MassMarket #PocketBooks #SignetHorror #1970sHorror #1980sHorror #1990sHorror #70sHorror #80sHorror #90sHorror #PaperbacksFromHell

Grannies with blue eyeshadow… Truly terrifying! Andrew Neiderman’s “The Immortals”(1991) —1991 First ed. by Pocket Books —Cover art by Lisa Falkenstern I got ahold of this book a long time ago (pre COVID), and it was bought solely because of the author. Andrew Neiderman is the ghost writer for the iconic V.C. Andrews, and I always loved the direction he took with some of her various series. Planning on reading this one soon! #AndrewNeiderman #VCAndrews #VirginiaAndrews #FlowersInTheAttic #TheImmortals #Horror #HorrorBooks #HorrorFiction #HorrorPaperbacks #HorrorCovers #HorrorCoverArt #RetroPaperbacks #VintageBooks #RetroHorror #RetroHorrorBooks #RetroHorrorPaperbacks #RetroHorrorArt #MassMarketHorror #HorrorMassMarket #MassMarket #PocketBooks #SignetHorror #1970sHorror #1980sHorror #PaperbacksFromHell #1990sHorror #90sHorror #80sHorror #70sHorror

Do y’all consider these two horror novels? James Dickey’s “Deliverance”(1970) —1971 MMPB printed by Dell Anthony Burgess’s “A Clockwork Orange”(1962) —1988 MMPB printed by Ballentine I consider both novels and their film counterparts as horror, but my grandma always told me they were too “high-brow” for the genre. I disagree, but others say that the horrific elements of both are closer to that of a drama or thriller. Truly, I love these editions so much (especially this “Deliverance”). They were both brought in for trading when I worked at a used bookstore, and I got them for extremely cheap with my employee discount. #Deliverance #AClockworkOrange #Horror #HorrorBooks #HorrorFiction #HorrorPaperbacks #HorrorCovers #HorrorCoverArt #RetroPaperbacks #VintageBooks #RetroHorror #RetroHorrorBooks #RetroHorrorPaperbacks #RetroHorrorArt #MassMarketHorror #HorrorMassMarket #MassMarket #PocketBooks #SignetHorror #1970sHorror #1980sHorror #PaperbacksFromHell #JamesDickey #AnthonyBurgess #HighBrowHorror

Do yall like #HolidayHorror literature and film? Thomas Altman’s “Black Christmas”(1983) —1983 First ed. by Bantam Books While there’s no correlation to the 1974 Canadian masterpiece of the same name, this is a fun read with a beautiful cover. Also, Thomas Altman is one of the pseudonyms of author Campbell Black (which is also a pseudonym LOL). #Horror #HorrorBooks #HorrorFiction #HorrorPaperbacks #HorrorCovers #HorrorCoverArt #RetroPaperbacks #VintageBooks #RetroHorror #RetroHorrorBooks #RetroHorrorPaperbacks #RetroHorrorArt #MassMarketHorror #HorrorMassMarket #MassMarket #PocketBooks #SignetHorror #1970sHorror #1980sHorror #PaperbacksFromHell #BlackChristmas #ThomasAltman #CampbellBlack
