Wowsa! This is a QUILT! Such an intricate and beautiful piece of work! Sharon Kerry-Harlan says that she loves making a cohesive whole from disparate scraps. "Sharon Kerry-Harlan’s Portrait of Resilience pieces together materials and symbols from the past and present to create a portrait of a Black American in this current moment. In this large-scale, mixed-media quilt, Kerry-Harlan depicts a girl with a youthful bubble braid. Each bubble is haloed with the crownlike appearance of a COVID-19 particle. Her blouse is constructed of an antique patchwork quilt, and she wears a golden necklace made with faux leather that notes the year the piece was made, 2020. She stares directly at us with large, dark-brown almond-shaped eyes outlined with eyelids of sparkly gold. 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 - 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆-𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻 Although I have been recently devoted to portraiture and painting, I come from a long line of craftspeople and sewers. Sewing was my first real art and I still regularly work on my machine. I follow a number of textile artists from across the country, including Sharon Kerry-Harlan (@sharonkerryharlan). So, seeing the new pieces at the recent Renwick opening party was a big inspiration and I can’t wait to go back and inspect everything even closer with my mom. Although her art speaks for itself, seeing her in person was wonderful because I can understand the strength and vitality much better as a direct reflection of her. I visited Portrait Society Gallery on Thursday to see the show “Seams.” The show is very inspiring and one of the pieces I saw was by Sharon Kerry-Harlan. I’ve been seen her work on social media for some time but not in person. I was amazed by seeing the work in person. There is so much lost in a photo. After a six-month closure, the @amswedinstitute reopens to the public today. Things look a bit different: The hours are shorter, everyone is wearing masks, and you need reservations to tour the museum or eat at @fikaasi. We attended the members opening yesterday and were impressed with how well they’re handling the coronavirus weirdness. ASI has extended its run of “extra/ordinary: The American Swedish Institute. At Play” through January 24, 2021 and unveiled a phenomenal new exhibition in the Osher Gallery downstairs. ‘We Who Believe in Freedom’ is a quilting show curated by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi, founder of the Women of Color Quilters Network (WCQN). It’s part of the multi-site ‘We Are the Story’ initiative, which features dozens of art quilts addressing issues of racism and social justice. (Pictured here: “Power In Numbers” by Sharon Kerry-Harlan of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.) The ASI exhibition will be on display through November 1. ‘Gone but Never Forgotten: Remembering Those Lost to Police Brutality,’ a national juried show featuring 28 quilts, opens at the @textilecentermn on Tuesday, September 15 and runs through December 24.
