To many, remakes are a sign of laziness on the part of studios, opting to lean-in on what audiences know or have a relationship with rather than taking a chance on something new. Every now and then, however, magic happens and the newer version is able to sit right next to the original as its own thing. Således blev det ikväll Steven Soderberghs avslutningsfilm i sin Ocean's-svit, där han åker tillbaka till Las Vegas, ändrar gängets motivation till hämnd, och fyller hela filmen med coola montage satta till ett skönt gungigt soundtrack. Det här är första gången jag ser en av uppföljarna lösryckt, bara för sig - och min inre ordförande i ordning och kutym protesterade såklart. Men alla fyra Ocean's-filmer är ohämmat underhållande, och det gick därför alldeles utmärkt att se en av dem lösryckt från övriga delar. On March 8, 2001 (22 years and 2 weeks ago), the world was first introduced to the cast of Ocean’s Eleven at the ShoWest convention. Later renamed CinemaCon, the highly publicized event allowed studios to hype up upcoming projects. Since it was being held at the Paris Hotel, just across the street from the Bellagio where they were filming, nearly the entire cast made it out along with producer Jerry Weintraub. I find it hilarious that out of everyone, we see Shaobo Qin at the podium 🎤 Of note in these photos is that while everyone else is wearing their own clothes, George Clooney is in full costume, hair, and makeup as Danny Ocean. I’d forgotten what a polished and precise piece of filmmaking this is. There are few examples of a film this big, complex and full of pitfalls that is delivered as seemingly effortlessly as this one. Danny Ocean (Clooney) just got out of prison and immediately sets about planning an elaborate robbery of three of the biggest casinos in Las Vegas. Said casinos are all owned by Terry Benedict (Garcia) who is also the boyfriend of Tess Ocean (Roberts), Danny’s ex-wife. Danny enlists his old pal Rusty (Pitt) and together they travel the country assembling the wild group of oddballs required to pull off the most audacious casino robbery in history. I mentioned earlier how rare it is for a film of this scale and complexity to turn out as well as Ocean’s Eleven did. It makes linear sense and very few parts of the caper seemed forced or convenient. The cast has chemistry a group this large and varied really has no right to. They really seem comfortable with each other and the relationships with years behind them feel authentic. While the whole cast is great I was struck by how intimidating Andy Garcia was. This was a different role for him and he really sunk his teeth in. Steven Soderbergh is one of the finest craftsmen of his generation and he proves it with this movie.
