The beauty of a Razorbill, the black and white of their body, with the tall black bill and white stripes. Razobills are one of the Auk species and is related to puffins and guillemots. They are a medium sized seabird that only come to land to breed in spring/summer time on cliffs and islands. I took this photo on the isle of Lunga in the Scottish Hebrides. And this individual seemed to be posing for me. Always keep your distance from wildlife, photo taken with a zoom lens. The courtship rituals of a seabird are in my opinion, one of the most beautiful displays of love and trust within the natural world. Seabirds mate for life and return to the same colony every year, putting their trust into their partner to support them in successfully raising a precious chick. As an integral part of this process, Arctic Terns, the longest migrating bird in the world, test their partners ability with a “fish flight” in which the male birds bring the female a gift of a fish. The male angelically hovers above his partner before delicately passing her a fish to establish their pair bond and prove that he is capable of catching fish on demand. True to their name, Royal Terns perform their courtship rituals in a regal way. ✨ While on land, the male will typically present food to its potential mate and bow while raising its crest. After they mate, they’ll both draw near to each other and walk closely together in a circular form. Finally, the two will show off to the rest of the colony strutting side by side. If you see these regal terns while out on the beach this summer— #ShareTheShore with them by giving them at least 100 feet of space to nest and rest. I had quite an experience with puffins on this trip. Another photographer told us that there were puffins at the northernmost viewpoint, so we went over there and saw a few distant puffins. But on the way back, in an opening in some foliage, I saw a gliding puffin just 5 metres away! Back in Oban! Today after a walk I ended up sitting and observing the black guillemots in the Oban Bay. Most sea birds nest in large colonies, but not the black guillemot. They prefer smaller groups. In Oban Bay you can see a small group of around 14 breeding pairs that nest in the wall of the bay. And on a low tide you can sit on the stairs to the sea and just observe them. They are absolutely adorable and beautiful with their black plumage white spots on the wings and bright red feet! I was lucky enough to have just spent a week away in the Shetland Islands, one of the most pristine places I’ve ever been to. Theres gonna be plenty of photos to come but wanted to start off with the Gannets, one of the most popular birds found on the islands. Known for their soft orangey yellow feather tone on their head, their striking blue eyes and massive wing span, they come in as the largest seabird in the Northern Atlantic. After being hit hard with bird flu in 2021/2022, the population numbers declined by thousands.
