Lo scultore reggino Francesco Triglia ha scelto il bronzo per rappresentare Scilla nell’esatto momento della sua metamorfosi in mostro. Le sue gambe si stanno trasformando in lunghe diramazioni, simili a serpenti, che terminano in teste di cane dai denti aguzzi, tutte tranne una che diventa un pinna. Il braccio destro della povera ragazza si allunga verso l’alto e con la mano Scilla si afferra la testa in un gesto di evidente disperazione. Il braccio sinistro è abbandonato lungo il busto, la schiena è inarcata, tutte le linee della scultura mostrano tensione. La sofferenza della ragazza per la punizione inaspettata che sta subendo è lampante. Sebbene Scilla abbia avuto più successo nelle rappresentazioni iconografiche e letterarie greche e romane, la sua fama è indissolubilmente legata a quella di Cariddi, con cui costituisce una coppia pericolosa e portatrice di morte. Le due sono appostate a entrambi i lati dello stretto di Messina, di cui sono implacabili guardiane: Scilla in terra calabra, in corrispondenza del promontorio Scilleo, Cariddi a distanza di un dardo, in terra sicula. Le due figure hanno una specificità propria. Se infatti Scilla divora gli uomini, Cariddi risucchia le navi, facendole naufragare.
