Rural Studio celebrated its 30th anniversary on Friday and Saturday, April 26-27th, at the 2024 Pig Roast, the annual event that highlights the year’s work and our home, West Alabama. The two-day event featured 13 distinguished alumni speakers, stellar foods from local eateries, tours of and updates on Rural Studio projects and initiatives, live music, fireworks, and a shower of confetti (“Whiffle Dust”). More than four hundred visitors traveled all the way to Hale County, with alumni coming from as far as England, as well as both our founders’ families: the Mockbees and the Ruths! This year’s Pig Roast was an extra-big deal. Thirty years ago, Samuel Mockbee and D.K. Ruth ran with the then-radical vision of putting down roots in a little rural community, hours away from their university, to teach students the value of rural, to teach them that place matters and that good design is for everyone, to cultivate what Mockbee called “citizen architects.” Thank you to our 27 Pig Roast sponsors, most of whom are located right here in Hale County! This year’s Pig Roast was extra, extra special. The internationally renowned architecture program celebrated 30 YEARS (!!!) of design. What an absolutely amazing feat, and how unbelievably lucky we are to have them right here in Hale County. The gatherings were perfect, the lectures were really heartfelt and beautiful, and while I very sadly missed the project tours, I know those were spectacular. Just feeling so honored for having the opportunity to be a part of the celebration and to feed everyone over the weekend. And while I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of this event for the past 3 years, it felt necessary for me to make a spread more special than the last. It’s easy to create beautiful, delicious dishes when you have access to such fresh, gorgeous produce. Thank you @ruralstudio Farm and @bellemeadowfarm for growing such lovely fruits and veggies! On the table this weekend, we had… • a vibrant Beet, Bean & Berry Salad feat. farm fresh lettuce, snap beans, strawberries, steamed beets and lots of herbs in a spiced beet + lemon dressing with Egyptian chickpea snacks and sourdough croutons • Chopped Greens feat. kale, kohlrabi greens and collards in a preserved lemon dressing with turnips, radishes, spiced pickled chickpeas and herbs (of course) • Roasted Dukkah Carrots over Lemon Tahini • a celebration cake that provided a beautiful life lesson. Vanilla Spelt Brioche Cake with Fig Leaf (Sweet Potato) Coconut Whip and Strawberry Rose Chia Jam • a platter of Spring Cookies: Rosemary Oatmeal Cacao and Preserved Lemon Lavender Coconuts • (not pictured) a kohlrabi, apple and turnip slaw in chili with a ginger lime herb dressing and pickled red beans for Saturday Taco Salad day! A beautiful weekend to end a really spectacular month for the kitchen. Just the boost I needed to start this next chapter. Auburn University’s @ruralstudio Studio Front Porch Initiative has partnered with the @cityofselma Planning and Development Department, @housingselma, @blackbeltcommunityfoundation, @auoutreach and the @alabamaextension to develop sustainable, affordable and high-performance housing within the city. The Glass Chapel by @ruralstudio built 2000 in Mason’s Bend, Hale County, Alabama. Pic 1 is when new. The rest taken today. This has always been one of the highest visibility projects created by students of the @auburnu architecture program, ingeniously founded by the late Samuel Mockbee to leverage education into affordable buildings for residents of Hale county living below the poverty line. The chapel was designed around the donation of 80ish surplus Chevy Caprice windshields. As you can see, they’re not faring so well a quarter century later. I’ve read that part of the challenge with communal buildings like this one delivered by the program is establishing a sense of ownership and care. Yesterday I met the ever so lovely Carol who was just soooo nervous about coming along to quilt her patchwork… she even bought along a friend for support! So we took all the time in the world and had a very relaxing day with lots and lots of practice (and coffee!) before tackling the quilt itself. Carol did absolutely amazingly and I was very proud of what she achieved . It was a cracking little quilt and now has been quilted in a swirls and hearts design that she loved and she also chose a subtle silvery very light grey thread.. and it was all completed by her own fair hand! A fantastic fun day full of so much laughter with these three wonderful ladies, Marea, Pam and Llywela! Well today is World Parkinson’s Disease Day. I have lost friends to this awful thing and have friends currently travelling the journey…. Moda released a range of fabrics this year called Etchings for a Cause whereby with each purchase of yardage a proportion of the profits would be given to the research of this disease and towards care of those affected. My dear friend Kate of Calico Kate - haberdashery, fabric, quilt store Wales is selling this divine range of fabrics in subtle creams, greys, aqua and a vibrant red. There is a beautiful cushion kit that she has on sale and there are a couple of free patterns around too for quilts on the internet… however this design caught my eye online and after much hunting I managed to get the pattern with a little help from a friend… and as soon as the extra wide batting arrives this little beauty will be on the frame to be quilted in delicate mint green tulips…currently spread out on the bed after her haircut!… I will post when she is done! Hello! I haven’t really posted for a while because I’ve been so busy in my studio working on new projects and commissions. The new stuff is either too early to share or for private clients. I’m told that not posting daily/regularly is bad for the old algorithms but I hate posting for the sake of it and I find it does me good to have a break from social media.
