My first race since December was one of my favorites, #maketracksthroughthezoo @stlzoo! I am in no shape to really race right now and I spent yesterday afternoon at a craft beer festival 😬and did not feel amazing this morning. It was super hot even early - summer is here! - but I’m proud of my effort! First two miles were great, the hills inside the zoo on mile 3 got me and I walked a bit. But I had a great time and my hubby and kids then met me for the 1 mile race before we saw all the animals. As a mental health professional, it’s true that running is life changing. It’s not just about physical health. It’s about how good it can make you feel, the social connections you make from it, a mental escape, and the sense of accomplishment. What started as a casual interest became a lifeline for well being. Sometimes it’s nice to get outside and move the body. Other times it’s nice to talk to friends. Other times it’s just the perfect distraction. The 20 weeks of training was a tremendous experience. It’s an exercise of focus, not overtraining, staying disciplined, and coming back to the path when fallen off. It’s certainly a mental game I’m playing at the moment! Today was #speedintervals - but just 25 minutes worth. After the hours upon hours of marathon training, scaling back for a bit and recovering is absolutely the best thing to do at the moment, but reminding my brain that these low mileage weeks are actually active recovery has been tough. I know my body well and it’s certainly NOT ready for full volume training yet… but it will be soon 🔜 if becki’s brain can be ok with the slower mileage for a minute!! Couldn’t bring myself to make a video to #recap the @gostlouis #GreaterStLouisMarathon from yesterday so here’s some of the pictures. Day started out great. Sun was coming up over downtown and we got to the course with plenty of time to warm up, use the bathroom, etc etc. I think I could’ve drank more water during this time. Gun went off right at 7am and I got out a little quicker than I planned, going through the first mile in 6:39. I felt good, I was excited, and I thought I might settle in to a slower pace. I was wrong. We were running ~6:40/mile pace very steadily for 18.5 miles and that’s when shit in the fan. Hamstrings on both legs just seized and I was forced to stop on the course and hobble to the side. Eventually, maybe 20 seconds later, I was able to stand and stretch before starting off again. The next 7.7 miles were the most painful running experience I’ve ever suffered in my life. Constant cramps in my hamstrings and quads and having to stop and walk a lot. In that moment, I had to throw my time goal out the window and focus on just finishing the dang race. I got passed by a lot of people - then I’d pass those same people a quarter of a mile later. The entire field around me was hurting bad. When I finally made the turn off of 14th Street, my groin started to cramp. I was walking the uphill section of the finish when a spectator gave me some much needed instruction - “YOU BETTER NOT WALK TO THAT FINISH LINE COME ON!” I’m not sure if I actually ran in or just power-limped along, it was incredibly painful. I saw the clock at 3:06:50 something and just wanted to get in by 3:07:00 and I ended up doing that. 3 hours, 7 minutes, and 0 seconds on my first marathon and my #longestrunever. After having some time to think about the day and really reflect on this training block - I am so proud. I’ve accomplished so much. I am hungry for more! Nothing is official yet but I’ve got my eyes on a fall marathon… we ain’t finished yet. Hopefully more photos to come once we get some of the digital photos and maybe some more are uploaded to the results.

4 miles for #sundayrunday - my longest run (without stopping/walking!) in 2 months! On the way back from the grocery store I pointed out a spot that I ran through earlier this morning to my daughter and she said “wow, you ran fast today!” And I said no, I definitely did not run fast, but the key to running longer and not having to stop is slow and steady. So I was able to run farther today because I didn’t run fast. I’m in my slow and steady era and that’s just fine by me. I definitely had some fomo seeing all of the @gostlouis posts yesterday and I hope everyone running had an awesome race! I heard great things about the new courses and post-race party and I hope to be back on that start line next year. I’m getting this running thing back… slowly and steadily. If you aren't familiar with the Happy’s Brewery Run, it's a chill afternoon brewery hop with friends, featuring four St. Louis breweries, one beer aid station, run bingo, run swag and a whole bunch of awesome people. The event kIcks off May 4th at 12p with packet pickup at City Park Grill, then hot the pavement, sashayIng across town. Hit the famous Resonance BrewIng Beer Aid Station, then 2nd Shift Brewing, Modern Brewery, Rockwell Beer Company & loop back to CIty ParK Grill. Each leg is 2-ish or fewer miles. Each stop is roughly an hour. The run totals 7.6 miles & you’ll be home In time for dinner. Did my first 10k! A couple of pee breaks, but no walking. Ran the whole 6.2 miles, by far the most I’ve ever done. Pretty cool running through the city and across the Eads Bridge. But the best part was all the snacks and beer they handed out afterwards! 🍻 #runstl #10k #exercise

It’s amazing what some sunshine, endorphins and cute new shoes can do in an hour. I was in a major funk this morning (just ask my hubby and kids 😳) but this run turned it around. I finally found what I have been chasing, questioning, mourning and missing for over a year now - that glorious (pain free) runner’s high that turns your mood around, shifts your perspective and reminds you how strong and capable you are. And realizing it doesn’t have to be 8, 10, 12 miles to get there has been huge. Such a great feeling to finally find it again. These spring-tactically adorable new @brooksrunning Ghosts also helped.
