Parents or caregivers struggle with a range of different feelings, from fear for the child's state of health to powerlessness and feelings of guilt, not only towards the hospitalised child but also towards other family members, especially siblings. Apart from that, there is often a lack of knowledge and awareness of RSV and its possible consequences.  🔍With the #ResQFamily study, we want to shed light on the various burdens that families are confronted with during this worrying time of hospitalisation of their loved ones. I took these photos 3 years ago today. They’re the only pictures where I can really picture Xander when he’s older. There’s something so adolescent about the way he’s holding himself. I often wonder what he would be up to now. What he would look like, what milestones he would have reached. Would he still be feeding from a tube, would he be on oxygen still (we never did have hi-flow at home, but we were in the works of getting him sorted to be on it at night when he passed away)? Would he be standing and walking unsupported by now, would he be speaking? Would he now be able to wear his hearing aides? These are all questions that run through my head daily. And I’ll never know the answer to any of these questions, because that future never became a reality for me or for him. In an alternate universe I would have taken him to the hospital sooner and completely ignored my doubts about my mother’s intuition. He could have been saved, and he may still be here, or it may not have mattered, and I’d still be here today. In the grief world, we call this kind of grief secondary loss. The Department of Health in Pretoria has issued a media statement urging the public to take extra precautions against respiratory infections during the winter season. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is currently at its peak circulation, and its symptoms can be confused with COVID-19. Influenza virus infections are also increasing. While COVID-19 circulates at low levels, it’s essential to remain vigilant. High-risk individuals, including adults aged 65 and older, those with heart and lung diseases, people living with HIV and tuberculosis, and pregnant individuals, should get the influenza vaccine. The vaccine is available for free at public clinics and can be purchased at pharmacies. Preventive measures include covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, staying home when sick, and avoiding close contact with others. Common symptoms of respiratory viruses include a runny nose, decreased appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. According to NSW Health, studies have shown Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab) to be around 80% effective in preventing children from being hospitalised with RSV during the RSV season! So, let's talk about it. 🤔 How does it work? Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab) provides a type of immunity that occurs when a person is given antibodies rather than making them through their own immune system. Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab) contains pre-made RSV antibodies that protect the body from illness. These antibodies give protection almost immediately after the immunisation. The antibodies last for at least 5 months but disappear after this time. 👶🏽 Is my little one eligible for Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab)? At the time of posting, it is only available in Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. NSW Bubs who are at higher risk of severe illness from RSV are eligible for Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab) under the NSW Health RSV vulnerable babies program: 👉🏼 all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies born after 31 October 2023 👉🏼 all premature bubs born before 37 weeks of pregnancy and born after 31 October 2023 👉🏼 other infants living with specific chronic and complex health conditions. While it often results in mild symptoms, it can become serious. Knowing how to manage RSV at home, and when to seek medical attention, is crucial for parents and caregivers. Managing RSV at Home: Rest and Comfort: Ensure your child gets plenty of rest and stays comfortable. Hydration: Offer fluids regularly to prevent dehydration. Nasal Saline Drops: Can help ease congestion. Followed by gentle suction for babies. Humidifier: Using a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room can help ease breathing. When to See the Doctor: Persistent Fever: If your child has a fever that doesn't improve or is consistently high. Difficulty Breathing: Look for signs of labored breathing, such as rapid breaths, flaring nostrils, or ribs pulling in with each breath. I am currently admitted into the ICU at Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and this morning the doctors told my mommy and daddy I am just getting really tired. They decided to put me into an induced coma and on a ventilator so I can rest and feel better! I know this is probably stressing my mom and dad out but I pray they know I will be okay and god is healing me. 🚨 Attention all parents and parents-to-be! 🚨 The Spring Equinox has arrived, the Easter Bunny comes on Sunday 3/31/24, but flu and RSV season are not over. Did you know that Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is highly contagious and can be especially dangerous for newborns, especially during RSV season? 😷👶 RSV season typically runs from late fall through early spring, peaking in the winter months. It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, and even just by touching contaminated surfaces. 🤧 That’s why it’s crucial to take extra precautions to protect your little one, especially during this time of year. One of the best ways to protect your baby from RSV is by ensuring they receive all recommended vaccinations, including the RSV vaccine if it’s available in your area. 💉 Additionally, pregnant individuals are often offered an RSV vaccine between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy to help prevent infection. It’s also important to note that people who aren’t even sick themselves can be carriers of RSV, which is why kissing babies can be so dangerous. Even if you feel healthy, you could unknowingly transmit the virus to your baby. Practicing good hand hygiene by washing your hands frequently and encouraging visitors to do the same can help prevent the spread of the virus. 🧼 Avoiding exposure to crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, especially during peak RSV season, is also important for keeping your baby safe. I like to keep it positive around here but sharing this for awareness. The last few days have been rough! Last week Nicolas tested positive for RSV Bronchulitis. What’s kept us together is GOD and knowing that our baby needed us to be strong for him. To any soon-to-be mommies reading this, if the RSV vaccine is available to you, ask your doctor about it and consider taking it. 🙏🏽 Unfortunately, it was not available to me when I was pregnant otherwise it could’ve totally spared my baby from going through this at only five weeks! We had already taken precautions to prevent from any of us getting sick around this time (flu and Tdap vaccines, limiting visits, etc.) but it’s crazy how you can never be careful enough! This only reinforced my need to not underestimate ANYTHING when it comes to protecting my child. Parents, do NOT be worried about people critiquing or not understanding when you enforce no kissing your baby, limiting exposure when they’re infants, vaccines, whatever it is you feel is necessary to protect your child. 👏🏽There’s nothing harder and more unsettling than seeing your baby this sick. 😞 #rsvawareness #newborn

RSV is usually a winter virus that infects the respiratory tract and can cause some serious problems for our littlest littles. What are the symptoms? - Fever - Runny nose and congestion - Cough - Hard and fast breathing - Wheezing - Decreased appetite and feeding leading to dehydration The highest risk kiddos are children <2 years old, and any child with a history of respiratory problems (like asthma). The virus infects the respiratory system and produces a LOT of mucous. You will see this as LOTS of clear/thick discharge coming out of your child’s nose with a wet and persistent cough that tends to worsen as the illness progresses. When should you have your kid seen? There are 2 main things to look for here: breathing and hydration. Breathing – look for your child breathing hard and fast. If your child is <1 year, you may see his little nostrils flaring every time he breathes in. Lift up his shirt and look at his tummy and chest. If you see the skin between the ribs sucking in every time he takes a breath, this is concerning. You may also hear wheezing while he is breathing. These kids need to be seen right away! Hydration – the congestion and mucous makes it hard to feed well. The nose gets so full of mucous that it becomes difficult to nurse or drink from a bottle and breathe through the nose at the same time. As a result, feeding volumes go down, putting your child at risk of dehydration. If you start seeing your kiddo not feeding well and having fewer and lighter diapers, it is probably a good idea to have your child seen! RSV tends to last 5-7 days and most kids tolerate it just fine. Now and then a child will need some extra help getting through the illness for a few days.
