Dio - Sacred Heart. Ronnie James Dio passed away on this day back in 2010 and will always be the one that got away. The amount of chances I had to see RJD fronting either his eponymous band or Heaven & Hell and I stupidly passed on each and every opportunity. I thought I was going to get the chance to cross him off the list at Bloodstock 2010, but he passed away months before the festival took place. There aren’t too many bands that I haven’t seen that I regret not seeing. Obviously there are some bands who’ve never played here, but a lot of them are still active so there’s still a chance. Others played here way before my time so I don’t really consider those as missed opportunities. Van Halen would be one, but I never got too many opportunities to see them in the U.K. No dates over here since 1995 but they weren’t a band I was listening to 29 years ago. Cinderella are one I was desperate to see and my only real opportunity in 2010 saw me getting to the Download Festival too late. Stupid traffic. I’ve never seen Guns N’ Roses either. The Dio-led era marked my initiation into the realm of Black Sabbath, the godfathers of Heavy Metal, somewhere around 1982. For a considerable time, I regarded Ronnie James Dio as the sole voice of Sabbath until discovering they had a predecessor. Thereafter, I gradually delved into the earlier albums featuring Ozzy. Despite my growing affection for the Ozzy-era material, I firmly believe Sabbath reached its zenith when Ronnie James Dio was their vocalist! Regrettably, I never had the opportunity to witness Sabbath with Dio. I missed their performance in Holland during the Dehumanizer tour. Fortunately, I did catch the iconic lineup with Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice when they graced the stage in Holland under the moniker ‘Heaven and Hell.’ I’m currently immersing myself in the superb 2021 remaster of ‘Mob Rules’ on vinyl, which includes an additional record of bonus tracks. I was going to play something from Dio at the end of last week but when I was doing a bit of double-checking I noticed that he would’ve been 81 today, so I hung fire for a few days. There aren’t all that many bands left on my imaginary must see live list. A few of them are still going, but I actually don’t think I could force myself to watch a sub par version who are way past their sell by date. But at least the possibilities are still there.
