It has been so strong in my heart to bring to you some of the major concerns about Climate Change and Renewable Energy. I attended a program on Friday 24 May 2024 titled “Energy Transition Symposium” where a lot of issues were raised regarding Nigeria and Nigerians' preparedness in “renewable energy” or “going green” as many refer to it. As an international journalist and broadcaster, 😊I owe you this much to bring you abreast with my report and major salient points that were raised by patriotic and well-meaning Nigerians (majorly) who are truly concerned about the issue, how it is being handled and the way forward. It was my first time to sit (closely) in the same hall with Prof. Bartholomew Nnaji, former Nigerian minister of power and to hear him speak so passionately about his revelations, intervention so far and expectations. However, he disappeared before I could get a hold of him to book a one-on-one interview session with the lady where I would watch him happily narrating his track record during his time as a minister. During the panel discussion sessions of the event, Mr Diran Onifade reiterated the fact that we (including our leaders) like to talk so much in Nigeria with nothing much to show. He noted that we are in a moment of energy desperation and not only #energy #transition while calling that a desperate situation requires desperate actions as well. Hon. Uche Onyeagocha, former Secretary to the Government of Imo State and House of Reps. said, “We must stop importing ideas and embrace our indigenous capacities.” He equally stressed for us to stop allowing our nation to be a dumping ground for all these evolving energy transition equipment like solar panels, instead, we must develop ours and should get ready to steal ideas or technologies if we have to. Damaris Uja, a monitoring and evaluation manager at the Women Environmental Programme (WEP) noted that every state must harness their resources to make the transition of fossil fuels and energy a smooth one. Taking Sanitation In Abuja Seriously! While taking a short walk in a particular area of Abuja called 'Zone 3', I must say that I am truly disappointed by the level of degradation going on over there, the polluted air in the vicinity, especially in the long street known as "Abidjans Street." It is almost like one cannot breathe in. The stench and heavy smell I encountered were so unbearable. It was choking my people. On speaking to one of the residents in the area, he pointed at a leaking Sorkaway. Of course, the photograph is duly attached to this post. Located at the beginning of Abidjans Street. Dependency Syndrome Years ago, while I served at 106.3FM, Abuja (We.Fm)... One of my colleagues taught me how to cut my audio sounds including Vox Pop and how to merge them and add music if I so desire. But, as the saying goes "Whatever you leave, leaves you", that's exactly how that skill left me since I left the radio station. So, I have literally struggled to get my sounds together and how I truly desire them to be. Although I have equally enjoyed the services of one of the good guys I know - Lanki - who has always been there as my unofficial/official audio producer. For a long time, he handled (and still handles) all my voice-over gigs and sounds I wanted to use during my Radio program. While I remain grateful to have him, I have desired secretly to be truly #independent and be able to cut most of my sounds by myself. Now, recently, God being so kind to me brought another good guy who opted to teach me again. And quite frankly, I have never seen such a thorough tutor as he is. It took him (Mr Danfodio) about 30 minutes or less to teach me the basics and on my second day boom, I was already cutting my sounds, saving and exporting my projects. All thanks to him.😊 The truth is, in EVERY aspect of life, don't just pray to be independent, you must do all you can to live such an independent life. The dependency syndrome will tie you down and give you such a false belief that you have certain things going well for you. If it is about humans, you will forever be tied to the fallacy that you have helpers. But, when they turn their backs on you...and because they are mere humans, they will surely turn their backs on you one day while you are left with your Abba to either show up for you or you are doomed. My #Message for you #today is "Run from every appearance of dependency. Kill the #dependency #syndrome before it kills you. Have personal knowledge… an elder in his 80s was repeatedly contacted by the investors who purchased his property, to such a degree that he gave into their demands. He signed a contract that had a clause >>>if he changed his mind, he had to pay $15,000<<<. When learned about the situation it was too late. Overall he felt he had a deal, was paid cash, 10x more that what he originally paid for the property. The problem is that people are forced into thinking this is their only option to sell because of the repeated calls, contact, engagement, etc. Elders still have landlines and answer every call. They are not screening, do have Verizon to screen… it’s a shame that the software used to find “investable” properties. This software is paid for by local libraries because investors ask… btw, you can ask the local library to buy software. And they must learn how to use it to help you. The developers make money hand over fist by these tactics. Who is monitoring developers? The harassment of homeowners who maybe ready to sell, but not connected to the broader options available. Customer Service: My Garden Sit-out Vs Church Experience Some time ago in 2023 when I visited my girlfriend in Karu, a suburb in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja... While we decided to hang out, I was almost freaking out on seeing a lady coming over to attend to us...😊🤦🏽♀️ Surprisingly, she was amazing, full of smiles and warmth and would ask us when we were about leaving whether or not we enjoyed ourselves hanging out in their garden. On the other hand, while seated in a Church programme earlier this year, a man walked up to us and demanded that we vacate the seats as they were meant for protocols. Obviously, you could see the fact that everywhere was already filled up with no visible empty seats available in sight. And, there was no sign indicating who the seats were meant for. So, I quickly responded to the man saying "Could you kindly find us another space seeing you are an authority." And he responded to say "I am afraid that is not part of my duties." Luckily for us, another man who was passing by overheard us and drew closer to instruct him to leave us. Effective Communication Skills Vs Public Relations In a particular WhatsApp Group that I belong to, a 2-day Seminar was organised for Friday and Saturday and I missed out on the second day - Saturday because I had to go for my Radio program. I thought about writing a quick message there to request for the recorded version to be sent to me. I realised that I struggled a bit in writing my message... One aspect of my heart wanted me 'to ask for the recording straight up', the other part opted for me to craft my message more beautifully. Because I had written about a different matter entirely, this was how I wrote it.👇 "One more thing, please... Was the last Seminar recorded? If yes, is it possible to share the recording with some of us who were unavoidably absent on the second day - Saturday? Thank you, again, in anticipation of your kind response." Now, while I feel the above was not in any way a bad way of sending my question in the Group, I could have done far better. And, here's the best way to have written my message.👇🏾 "Greetings, Sir/Ma. How are you doing today? How was the just-concluded Seminar? It's quite unfortunate that some of us couldn't make it on the Second day due to our work schedules. The Power Of Collaboration I heard a story about someone (a Nigerian) who had a golden opportunity to partner with some people in China to launch his long-time idea into reality, but he felt the Chinese people 'may' steal his idea... The truth is whether or not you fall into my category of person - the versatile beings or the multiverse, you need to know that of a truth, a time comes in your life when you literally cannot do everything you know how to do by yourself. There is much power in accomplishing great feats when you collaborate with someone else or a group of persons where you get to share your earnings in the end. Again, I have had the pleasure of getting some huge tasks done at the snap of the finger because of some strategic partnerships that I enjoy. So, my message is... 📌 Break out of your mediocre thinking. Learn to collaborate at major junctures of your life and most importantly, regarding your unique ideas, dreams or aspirations. 📌 Partnerships would give you major access alongside capital that you may not have to start or expand your idea, vision or businesses. 📌 Collaboration reduces stress to its bearest minimum. It gives you wings to fly and speed for major accomplishments. 📌 Be optimistic and eschew prejudices. Not everyone or experience is the same. Products, Organisations and Customer Service Reviews Versus Love In December 2023, one of my friends taught me something I would never forget in a hurry. What happened was that I had called out 'buy power dot com' on Twitter (now known as X) asking why I had yet to receive the token of the AEDC units I purchased from them after 15 minutes I initiated the action. They responded to me swiftly by saying they were yet to receive my payment from my bank. I called out GTB as well but alas...when I got a response on my WhatsApp via my main line with their Logo, I felt they were amazing to come to me so close, without knowing it was a Scammer. That's how my account was wiped off. Thank God I did not have so much at that time even though no amount is small in this present economy. Now, while I was chatting with this friend of mine, he said to me "It is a sign that you enjoy the services of any organisation when you give them the benefit of the doubt on any situation by reaching out to them privately over any issue." That hit me so hard that I began to say to him, "It is also a sign of love when I don't drag any organization publicly regarding their products or services failure." Understandably, many organisations and their customer services may not meet certain expectations but there is a better way to go about these types of issues. Likewise, using another case study of Erisco Foods and Chioma Egodi... I had an issue with a particular 3Crowns Tin Milk that got bad while others were still in good condition. I was concerned about me and my mom's health so I made a post on X while calling their attention to it. They responded almost immediately and while we took the matter to our DMs, I was quick to provide them with all the details of the remaining products I had in the house. In the end, the matter was resolved amicably on the same day and as they apologised and appealed for me to take down my post of them, I did not hesitate to do so. I am tempted to say a few lines about #publicrelations vs #love If you think that tearing people's lives down and 'cooking up' lies against individuals, leaders in different fields/sectors/offices, families, businesses and/or organisations are the sole motives you are a public relations #professional then, you should reexamine yourself and your strategies. And, those who engage in this noxious practice usually don't bother about what becomes of their victims - whether or not they are able to tell their stories of miraculous survival. Public relations is more about building peoples' images, their lives, brands, etc. It is being the mouthpiece of those you represent and standing up for them in all aspects, and no matter what. As a PR expert, you should be more interested in reaching your clients' #customers online through either paid, owned or earned media alongside traditional means. You should literally focus more on digital channels to use when planning strategies and campaigns for your clients and/or their business promotions. Public relations is never about lies. Neither is it about covering up the truth about whatever organisation you belong to. I have no clue why some are comfortable engaging in this manner. The good news is that the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations is heavy on all PR persons who engage in quackery practices. Most importantly, #pr is the art of influencing and controlling how the RIGHT information about those you work for is communicated to the general public. In a nutshell, I believe very strongly that those who have much LOVE in their hearts are the only ones who would truly give their best while actively involved in this industry. Why? Because they yearn and most importantly, it is in their 'bloodline' to see others happy and NOT to make peoples' lives miserable. And for the record, it is not only in PR that we need experts to show love (or have the same in their hearts) while discharging their duties, those in the medical fields are not left out. What is Love to you? Ever Thought About Redefining Love? On a day like today that many people all over the world identify as 'the day of love', one should naturally reminisce what love is and what love is not. What Saint Valentine's Day is about along with what he did...! What have you done and/or what are you doing to show that you love your immediate family, spouses, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, your pastor, the organisation where you work, etc? So, my friend (my professor-friend as I fondly call him) made me go deeper with my thoughts as he asked me earlier today "Whether or not love should be redefined, especially, seeing the issues of the 'LGBTQ community' that is making waves all over the world. Which amongst the types of #love do I think these sorts of people should fall into?" Innocently, I immediately responded by saying that they should fall into the "Philia Love - Affectionate Love" because some part of this type represents love between people - irrespective of what gender showcases the love from time to time. 📌Quite frankly, I look forward to hosting my Saturday #TownHallwithVivian Radio program in this direction, so make plans to be a part of it as myself and my guest(s) will lay things bare. Nonetheless, I believe we should call to mind what love is ideally and at every juncture of our lives, it should be redefined to soothe the desires we have for ourselves, our partners and others around us. Let me state that I do not subscribe to a particular day being mapped out to show some sort of affection as though such have never been or should cease to happen on other days. However, I would like to reexamine 'with my full chest' that love is patient; love is giving, love is cheerful and laughter, love is commitment, patience and selflessness. Love is building one another, accomplishing things together and sticking your neck out for each other. Love is giving a listening ear - it is paying attention to one another. Change How You Are Being Perceived vs Tell Your Story! #part2 I did a few things wrong in my early stages of life, one of them was when I worked with a particular boss who would send me out to buy either a bottle of Coca-Cola, a biscuit, etc often. Although those were not part of my official duties, I decided to speak with her to kindly give me a list of all she would be needing daily when she arrives so I can get that done at once and be able to focus on other duties seeing I was not only answerable to her alone. She frowned at my audacity to tell her what to do and how to do it... So, because of that incident and a few other times that I approached her on other issues, I obviously wasn't in her good book. I was being looked at by those around her as one spoilt brat, rude girl, etc. In fact, some were very open to saying to me this aunty said this or that about you...And, when there was an opportunity to stand in for someone in another place where the woman worked, I jumped on the offer as I wanted to change the way I was being perceived. In the end, it was like #wow, "please stay forever with us" kind of expressions from almost all the people there by the time I was done serving. On the other hand while in a different organisation, where toxicity, fighting, shouting, abusing one another, etc. was at its highest level - was a norm, perhaps part of their #culture. And, it doesn't matter the status of anyone but for the sake of emphasis, a place where a driver would tell you while insulting you that you are single and cannot match his wife... Sincerely, "I lost my cool" about 3 times while major people were always telling me to get used to it and that such doesn't bother them anymore. Be Careful How You Are Perceived…! I understand that in an internet age or in a world driven by technology that we are in, many of us are focused mostly on going viral - how many engagements, likes, comments or impressions we get on our work/posts/products from time to time. Don’t get my thoughts twisted, please. It is lovely to have all those. But who do men say you are? Like Jesus asked his disciples - “who do you say I am?” I know many times we say these lines: “I don’t care what people say about me” “What matters is what God says…” The truth is, you should be concerned about how you are perceived by those around you, those you meet wherever you find yourself. It all adds up to your brand and/or your branding. While you have all the elements that influence a #brand - appearing beautiful, your values, culture, the way you talk, walk, etc intact; you must pay attention to who the next person in your life thinks you are. Building a successful brand is the foundation of anything else you do whether online or offline. There is also the way you will present yourself that will affect your brand and the public perception of you. It is sweet to tell amazing and life-changing stories about yourself but understand the fact that it is not everything you bring to the public spaces. Mind how you #market yourself. In a nutshell, a BRAND is simply how a business, person or an #organisation is perceived by the public. But my emphasis is not just on how the public perceives you and me. How your friends/families perceive you should matter to you as well. Whether or not their feedback comes from a place of envy, anger or love. I am certain you have heard or read about #branding a couple of times. Mine is that you should be careful how the next person around you perceives you. The staff: What are you insinuating? Me: Do you have any idea what lies on my plate as well as work...? Everyone has theirs filled up, not only you. The staff: What are you insinuating? I don't answer to you so don't make it look like it's an entitlement. Suit yourself if you think I am trying to make excuses, I don't have to explain myself to you. Me: No problem!
