This is Kate, a 21 year old trainee nurse working in an intensive care unit exclusively for Covid patients in the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford. She and her colleagues have to wear the highest level of PPE and despite the stressful atmosphere in there she always brings fun positive energy to the team and the patients. Her colleague who nominated her for #portraitsfornhsheroes says βitβs so hard when the patients canβt see our smiles but we hope they can see it in our eyes, because I canβt imagine how terrifying it is for them. Happy international women's day! I spent some time at the hospital this week (all fine) and noticed this display. In order to redress the balance in documentation on the 300 year history of the hospital (lots of significant males, not so many women) they have been pulling photos of women from the archives. One photo from 1919 of unidentified nurses caught the eye of the drawer-in-residence, Anouk Mercier, and she is drawing individual portraits of the women. The hope is that visitors to the hospital might be able to identify them. I've just included one portrait here but there's 18 of them already done. She can find a vein in a rock, some of my favorite experiences were laboring patients in triage, when no L&D beds were available, with Charity putting her magical doula pixie-dust on themπ, and on one particularly crazy busy evening, when they brought a heavily bleeding pregnant patient to my room, when I was worried for the patient to the point of hands shaking, madly getting her undressed and on monitors, lots of blood, no extra help available, when I thought the situation might go downhill real fast... like an angel, she came through the door with arms full of supplies knowing just what the patient needed, then running for the hemorrhage cart... I was not alone, because Charity had my back. I will NEVER forget the moment I saw her come through that door, and what it meant to me.
