Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Blaenavon 26/8/23 - - - - - Back again at the P&B railway, took my own advice and went on a nicer day. This weekend is the 40th anniversary of Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway company and to celebrate this – the oldest working train in the UK showed up. Furness Railway no. 20 is 160 years old and clearly very Victorian compared to the “modern” steam engines more commonly seen on heritage railways. After dragging my housemate out of his warm, dry, bed we went off to Blaenavon for the transport festival (there was a nice XR3i and a Gilbern Invader) at the Pontypool & Blaenavon railway. If you’re accustomed to the Welsh climate, you’re aware of rain. The stuff that hits like a pellet gun and goes sideways, making cover virtually useless. Well that followed us for the entire time that we were up there, not that it stopped the trains. The B&PR’s claim to fame being that it’s the highest preserved railway in the UK and to be honest it's not a bad one, the views are amazing if you’re a fan of ‘The Valleys’. Todays FREE day out! A circular walk from Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway to the Big Pit took around 45mins but probably could do it quicker. So many different trails, you can extend or shorten, even could include the big pit as it’s free only charge is parking but if you walk there nothing is needed. You could also walk to the Whistle Inn the other way which serves food and has a beer garden via Garn Lake. Loco info : This locomotive was built in 1956 for the National Coal Board (NCB) by the Hunslet Engine Company to the design used to supply to the Ministry of Defence and is thus regarded as an Austerity type locomotive. Wimblebury’ was delivered new to the NCB Cannock Wood Colliery near Hednesford in Staffordshire in 1956. It worked there until the early 1970s when it was withdrawn from service. The locomotive was purchased privately for preservation and moved to the Foxfield Railway in September 1973. It was originally planned that it would provide spares for another engine but this was not what happened. After being fitted with vacuum brakes Wimblebury was used regularly on the Foxfield Railway in the later 1970s. It was taken out of service and overhauled in the early 1980s after which it returned to traffic for many years. Following this it was out of service for ten years and then after another overhaul it was back in steam in July 2017. It was taken out of service and lifted in early 2018 in order to undertake axlebox repairs but returned to service by the middle of the year.
On August 4th, a huge leap forward in the restoration of class 37 37023 as the old power unit (engine and generator) was lifted out with the aid of a 95 ton mobile crane. This allows the engine bay to be cleaned, degreaced and painted ready for the new overhauled power unit to be dropped back in. And then, after a marathon of connecting it back up it will be a case of testing it out to see what other issues may be lurking unseen in this veteran of the uk rail haulage industry. A selection of stationary engines from the Blaenavon transport rally event in July, the first time that a rally has been held at the railway and it seemed to have gone down well, so much so that another one has been organised for the end of September. Hi all, I thought I'd give you all an update on my big Lister winch engine that has been a long term project for me started just before lockdown. The engine itself is now fully repainted and the front half of the bed plate where the engine mounting is has been painted as well. The fuel tank has recieved one coat of Lister mid-Brunswick green and is waiting on a second coat and its decals. All that remains is for the other half with the winch drum on it and the drum itself. This bit also needs a bit of repair as one of the support stays has been sheared off! In other news, she's had her show debut at the Blaenavon transport rally (it helps when the rally is on your doorstep as is raves hauling nearly 2 tons of engine around! 😉) where she performed faultlessly all weekend.
