I went to this gem of a Nature Conservancy preserve with some friends and colleagues yesterday. This is one of my favorite places to explore, with several zones featuring a variety of plant communities. I took over 100 pics, my only complaint was the Canada warbler that absolutely would not show itself. #glaciatedpoconoplateau #poconos #thomasdarlingpreserve #gem #natureconservancy #beautiful #botany #rhododendronpericlymenoides #pinxterbloomazalea #peatland #gaylussaciabaccata #huckleberry #cypripedium #pinkladyslipper #larixlaricina #americanlarch #broughtotyoubyglaciers #beaverdam

While the Pinxter Azalea is often cultivated for its ornamental beauty, it has other common uses as well. In traditional medicine, some indigenous communities have employed parts of the plant for various remedies. Additionally, the wood of the shrub has been utilized in the past for crafting items like tool handles and walking sticks, adding to its historical significance. #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae

There are fifteen azalea species that are native to the eastern United States and one species native to the west coast. You can use a key to figure out the different species. It uses techniques defined by Dr. Kathleen A. Kron as published in The Azalean, the journal of the Azalea Society of America. https://www.tjhsst.edu/~dhyatt/ars/pinkchoice.htm The native azaleas can be classified into three general groups according to flower color: the "white group", the "pink group", and the "orange group". After this first division is made, a few simple questions related to season of bloom, plant characteristics, or other details can be used to discriminate between the various forms. All of the species in the pink group bloom in early spring, usually before the leaves have fully expanded. There are five species in this group: Rhododendron canadense, Rhododendron canescens, Rhododendron periclyminoides, Rhododendron prinophyllum, and Rhododendron vaseyi. Flowers can range from pale pink, to deep rose, to almost cherry red. #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae

Common pollinators of Rhododendron periclymenoides are hummingbirds and butterflies like this Eastern tiger swallowtail on pinxter azalea, Rhododendron periclymenoides is susceptible to problems caused by both insects and disease. Common insects which cause damage to Rhododendron periclymenoides are aphids, nematodes, borers, lace bug, mites and whitefly. Common diseases include crown and root rot, leaf spot and powdery mildew. Many of the wild Rhododendron periclymenoides have more resistance to these issues than the hybrids which are bred for gardens #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae #swallowtailbutterfly

Rhododendron periclymenoides occurs throughout the Eastern United States, from southern New York south to Georgia, with isolated populations in Midwestern states. This plant prefers habitats in swamp margins, moist woods and open areas with full to partial sunlight or high, open shade. Soils in which Rhododendron periclymenoides grows best are typically acidic, rich in humus and retains moisture but should still have some drainage. #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae #HabitatMap

Rhododendron periclymenoides is a native of eastern North America. It is one of the chief parents of great garden azaleas, but is itself very rarely seen now. The flowers appear to be variable in color, even in a wild state, although of some shade of red or pink, or purplish. Of the native azaleas, whose flowers expand before the leaves, this differs from Rhododendron calendulaceum in the longer-tubed, differently coloured corolla, and in the bristly midrib of the leaf, and from Rhododendron canescens in the hairy, not glandular, corolla-tube. #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae #NativeTree #getoutdoors #treeloving #TreeLovers #ChampionTrees #TreesAreGood #GetOutside #BigTreesOhio #bigtrees #BeOutdoors #treeloving #TreeLovers #TreesOfInstagram #Trees #ohiotrees

Rhododendron periclymenoides has low levels of toxicity, and all parts of the plant may cause vomiting or diarrhoea if ingested in quantity. The poisons produced by rhododendrons are known as grayanotoxins, which are a class of neurotoxins. The honey which is made by bees which collect pollen from the genus Rhododendron species is referred to as “mad honey”. Humans who ingest this honey begin exhibiting many of the symptoms listed above as well as hypotension and other irregularities of cardiac rhythm. Outside of “mad honey” ingestion, human poisoning by rhododendrons is rare. However, pets and other livestock can still ingest the plant parts. #PinxterFlower #PinkAzalea #Rhododendronpericlymenoides #PinxterBloomAzalea #WildAzalea #pinxter #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Ericaceae #grayanotoxins #madhoney

NATIVE ALTERNATIVES to Invasive Asian Wisteria The Japanese and Chinese species of wisteria are often selected for their showy flowers and fragrance, but both cause problems because of their invasive spread beyond cultivation. Several native alternatives can provide beauty while supporting butterflies and hummingbirds with nectar. *American Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens), while not fragrant, is a good replacement vine with similar pendant racemes of violet-blue flowers. *Pinxterbloom Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides), a shrub of 6 to 12 feet can be a substitute species for fragrance in the garden. It has clusters of tubular pink flowers that are attractive to bees. *Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata), a colony-forming wildflower, has clusters of lavender, pink, or white fragrant flowers in April and May. CELEBRATING NATIVE SHRUBS: Pinxterbloom Azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides) is a multi-stemmed, suckering shrub with a rounded shape native from southern New England, through the Mid-Atlantic and into parts of the Southeast. It grows 3 to 10 feet tall and does best in dappled shade and moist, acidic soil. It has smooth, ovate leaves that appear whorled at the twig tips. Clusters of 5 to 16 pink or white, slightly fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers with long, protruding stamens bloom from April to May. Bees, swallowtail butterflies, and hummingbirds are attracted to their nectar. An elongated fruit capsule matures from September to October. Pinxterbloom Azalea can be used as a specimen or massed for use in shrub and mixed borders, foundation plantings, or woodland gardens. Unfortunately, it frequently suffers severe damage from deer predation. #mastergardener #celebratingnativeshrubs #pinxterbloomazalea #rhododendronpericlymenoides

It’s interesting how you don’t see things until you do. The dozen or so times I’ve botanized along this road, I’d never noticed the mowed shoulder was anything unusual but that day all I could see was the new growth of azaleas. Turned out to be minniebush (Menziesia) instead but when I looked up, pinxter azaleas ran up the spine of the ridge and out of site. Big, blooming, complimented by the song of black and white warblers. So many I’d never seen - didn’t look quite high enough. On the other side of the same ridge was one very pink and very fragrant Early Rhodo. Tomorrow we’ll see if it’s any further along and hope it has some friends nearby. Then on to the calendulaceum with fingers crossed. #pinxterbloomazalea #rhododendronpericlymenoides #rhododendronprinophyllum #earlyrhododendron #wildazalea #nativeazalea #deciduousazalea #magiconthemountain #menziesiapilosa #minniebush #vanativeplants #nativeplantsofvirginia #nelsoncountyva #springonthemountain #flowersofspring #easterndeciduousforest #nationalforest #restoringmyself

Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery Part 1. It is North Carolina wine month, and I wanted to share our visit to Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery this weekend. Before we enjoyed some wine, we enjoyed a hike from their property to Carter Falls. There is a trailhead near the waterfall, but you can extend the hike by starting from Grassy Creek Vineyards. It's a fun trail with gnomes and birdhouses. The waterfall had a bit of volume and muddy water due to the recent rain. The flowers nearby were beautiful! This week’s “mystery plant” post showed the flower buds of Wild or Pinxterbloom Azalea, a native deciduous shrub indigenous to moist to dry acidic forests and riparian areas, bogs, swamp margins, and streambanks, mostly in mountainous regions of the eastern United States. The distinctive flower buds appear at the end of branch tips and open in mid-spring either before or with leaves that have not fully expanded. The showy, tubular, slightly fragrant, pink or white flowers with long, curved, protruding stamens appear in large clusters of 5 to 16 blossoms, attracting bees, hummingbirds, and swallowtail butterflies. Wild Azalea has smooth, ovate, to elliptic medium-green leaves that turn a dull yellow in the fall. They are alternate but appear whorled at twig tips as they are tightly clustered. Wild Azalea is often a multi-stemmed shrub that branches low and grows into a rounded shape, usually reaching 3 to 6 feet in height. The shrub will become taller and leggier without a half day of light, but its leaves will scorch in hot afternoon sun. It is a suckering plant that can spread by stolons to form a hedge in foundation plantings and woodland gardens. Learn more about the care of this shrub from a fact sheet under Tried & True Native Plant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic at MGV.ORG. #mastergardener #mysteryplant #rhododendronpericlymenoides #pinxterbloomazalea

Initially thinking this was one of the black eastern swallowtail species, when I started trying to ID this butterfly, it turns out that female Eastern Tiger Swallowtails (Papilio glaucus) are dimorphic (occurring in 2 distinct forms). And this is the Dark Morph female! I'm basing this ID on these 2 characteristics: ▪️The abdomen is solid black (my 1st tip off) ▪️The upper edges of the wings have white dashes It's feeding on a Rhododendron periclymenoides (Wild Azaleas or Pinxterbloom Azaleas). Happy Easter, everyone! While heading back to the office on Thursday, I spotted something beautiful blooming beside the road, and with nobody around me, I turned back to investigate. Pinxterbloom azalea, a wonderful surprise! Last year I was treated to dwarf azaleas along ditch banks, but never expected to see one of these around here. Pinxterbloom azalea's common name is derived from the Dutch word for Pentecost (Pinxter), the seventh Sunday after Easter when they typically bloom. Most #azaleas you see growing in landscapes or at the garden center are Asian hybrids. I rarely see one in a landscape that is not affected by disease or insect invasion. Also, I personally think they're hideous. You may have seen my post last year where I ripped out six fuchsia pink azaleas that I inherited with my house. I should have done that years earlier. Luckily, we have some native options! There are two azaleas native to SC PA: the swamp azalea (Rhododendron viscosum) and the pink or pinxterbloom azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides). Both are slightly fragrant. Here Rhododendron species are a host plant to at least 53 species of moth and butterfly caterpillars. The #swampazalea is native to the the eastern and southern US states. It grows in swampy lowlands so it likes moist to wet soils and even tolerates flooding. Its white to pale pink flowers bloom from May to July attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. It's root system is shallow, so it appreciates some good mulch. The #pinxterbloomazalea has a slightly more limited native range than the swamp azalea, growing in moist woods and swamp margins. It prefers rich acidic soils that retain moisture but are well-drained. It will tolerate rocky soils, but not heavy clay. This azalea blooms in April in a soft pink color. This guy should tolerate insects and diseases better than most hybrid azaleas you find. Artist Susan Mintun is hard at work adding the stems and leaves to go along with the blooms of this pinxterbloom azalea (Rhododendron periclymenoides). Photo: Susan Mintun #jenkinsarboretum #jenkinsarboretumandgardens #americasgardencapital #FlorilegiumFriday #wip #artistsofinstagram #botanicalart #botanicalartist #botanicalillustration #pinxterbloomazalea #rhododendronpericlymenoides

Gorgeous day at Chapman Pond Preserve in East Haddam. While I may not have lucked out in the Trillium department like @the_real_nature_renee did, there was still plenty of pretties out there! The azaleas are blooming and they smelled amazing! And the colors—2 distinct varieties or just normal differences? Also saw(some pictured): Two Leaved Toothwort, Golden Ragwort, Blisterwort/Hooked Buttercup, Wool Sower Gall, Yellow Star Grass and I believe White Baneberry. I also saw lots of birds near the water. I was hoping for Bald Eagle but think the pic I posted may be a vulture. Thoughts? 🤔 Absolutely beautiful trail, just what I needed today. #easterncthikes #easthaddam #easthaddamct #pinxterbloomazalea #rhododendronpericlymenoides #wildazalea #nativeazalea #wildflowersinct #ctwildflowers #goldenragwort #sweetwhiteviolet #woolsowergall #whitebaneberry #yellowstargrass #chapmanpondpreserve #natureconservancy #hikinginct #cthikes #solohike #womenwhohike #hitthetrail #freshairtherapy

Commonly called pinxterbloom, or just pink azalea, Rhododendron periclymenoides brightens New England woodlands with masses of bright pink blossoms in the spring. The showy, fragrant flowers of this deciduous shrub, which eventually can reach six feet in height, attract butterflies and hummingbirds. This azalea grows in moist woods, swamp margins and open areas from Massachusetts to South Carolina and Tennessee. In the garden, pinxterbloom does best with a half day of sun. Star of the floodplain forest, the #pinxterbloomazalea #rhododendronpericlymenoides is in peak bloom right now. It will also shine in cultivated locations — if the conditions are just right 😉 #virginianativeplants #nativeplantsofvirginia #plantnativeplants #ecologicallandscapedesign #floodplainforest

It was a beautiful day—the weather is starting to get hot 🥵 though! The club and @bentonmackayetrail hiked to an abandoned village on the Ocoee River. We tried to imagine how things might have been during its heyday. Also 🐍➡️❗️

What’s blooming in the humidity? The first picture is Memere’s (Mike’s grandmother’s) peonies that were planted here 30 years ago. They’ve never looked particularly happy in their sunny spot no matter what I did. This year they look great! #festivamaxima #geranium #columbine #yellowladyslipper #mayapple #pinkladyslipper #bridalwreathspirea #viburnum #pinxterbloomazalea #souvenirdelamaisonrose

This lovely, lightly-fragrant native azalea is widely adaptable, though it does love to have damp feet and dappled light. That said, like all rhododendrons and azaleas it needs protection from deer browsing. This plant is a host to several sawfly and caterpillar (moth/butterfly) larvae. These larvae are important foods for birds #putnampollinatorpathway #nativeplants #pollinators #pollinatorgarden #stuffccedoes #cceputnam #pollinatorfriendly #pollinatorpathway #rhododendronpericlymenoides #pinxterbloom #pinxterbloomazalea
