After a few scars on my elbows last season, trying some G-form Pro-X3 pads for the first time. I didn’t fall on them yet, and I’m really not sure they will be very durable, but I think they should definitely hold off a few crashes. Hot and humid yesterday in Toronto, they were also very comfortable and breathable: I almost forgot I was wearing them. Anyone else having a week of progression frustration? I'm trying to make the step up to dropping in on the next biggest ramp at my local park (its about 6ft). I've done it before, but it's also the same ramp where I fell before and had a concussion, which is stuck in my brain. Things I logically know: 🛹 I can totally drop in on this ramp, and have dropped in on lots of other 5 ft ramps, and its been just fine 🛹 I'll probably do it, feel brilliant and never look back 🛹 At some point I'll have to do it, so I may as well just get it over and done with Things my brain is saying: 🛹 What if I get concussion again?? 🛹 What if I forget how to drop in mid way? 🛹 What if I break my face 🛹 What if I hurt myself, can't work & we won't have money 🛹 Basically just a massive feeling of F**K this is scary! In a session this week I literally went and stood at the top about 10 times in the session, telling myself to just do it. Then I'd go back, drop in a ton of times elsewhere, do all the big roll ins (9 ft at my park, no small feat!) and head back. SO BLOODY FRUSTRATING. Thursday is the day. Any tips? How do you deal with this? It's always interesting to hear how communities are born. Our guest on this weeks podcast @raizortail is also the founder of @dorksondecks, an excellent community in Amsterdam (I was introduced by @mercatmiller founder of @project.fearless who was on the podcast previously). In Cornely's case, the community started because she'd attended a beginners course with a group, wanted to go outside and skate, and needed company. Self interest in finding like minded people to make doing new things easier, that became so much more, facilitating others to do the same. I started @boardwomen for similar reasons. I wanted to do more skating, surfing and snowboarding, and I didn't have many mates who were interested. And I just felt like so many women were telling themselves they couldn't do these things because they were too old / didn't have balance / didn't feel part of these sports. But now they do! I bloody love how women learn in a group together. I rocked up to one of my solo surf sessions at The Wave at the weekend, to find that it was little old me in a group of about 25 guys, 24 of whom were on a stag do. Now, it's important to say that I've always hung out with groups of guys, have plenty of male mates, and the guys I know who surf and skate and snowboard are nothing but brilliant. This group of guys however had decided to have 4 pints before getting on the water. Most were in a session that they had no experience to warrant being in, or on board sizes that were too small. They didn't listen to the safety briefing, and repeatedly ignored the girl on the side who was running our session, meaning they all piled on top of each other, and kept missing waves or getting stuck in the current. Half of them didn't even manage to get half way through the session (more waves for us!). But, the thing that really struck me was how they interacted as they learned together. They jeered when they fell off. Teased each other even when they did well. Made excuses that blamed everyone else when they fell. I was just so sad for them that they couldn't be more open about the process of learning. That they couldn't just have a group who supported each other, had brilliant fun, and were open about what they could and couldn't do. This is by no means all men. Just that particular group of men. But it made me very glad to have my crews to learn with, and to be building this community to give others the same Who is in your crew? At the skatepark this weekend, a 7 year old girl was scooting up and down on a set of ramps I was using. Aside from almost killing me several times (take turns!), she was super sweet, and told me that she thought I was a great skater (little does she know). She also told me that her mum wouldn't let her skate because it was 'too dangerous'. ARGH. I told her about how many young girls skate now. How she can do whatever she puts her mind to (with pads and a helmet). And that if she explained that really nicely to her mum, maybe she'd change her mind. Why do we limit girls in this way? In many ways, the only reason that @boardwomen even exits is that we were all told this as kids. It makes my blood boil a little. Were you encouraged as a kid to take risks? Do you do the same with your daughters / younger girls in your life? Or the women around you? Who wants to come surfing (and skating) this weekend? I'm off for a recce trip to @thewave this weekend to get the lay of the land for future retreats. There's a small group of us going and staying in one of their safari tents for the weekend. Do you feel scared going to a new skate park? I saw that @elizahatch has a challenge at the moment that is focused on trying a new (outdoor) skate park each week (for charity), because she's always felt nervous going to new parks. I've been trying new parks with my son or solo, either on holiday, or whenever we visit people, and it really makes a difference to your skating. You're forced to try new things, to work out how your skating works outside the comfort of your own local park. I tend to go early, because it's less daunting that way (I just prefer quieter parks anyway), but when we visited Leigh-on-sea the other week (where my parents live), even early there were a number of brilliant skaters there, and it affected my confidence at the start (they were actually totally friendly). Realistically, I've only had positive experiences, and it's in my head more than anything, so once my brain clams down it's all fine. But it's definitely a thing! We've got Skate Safari's coming up that mean that we can visit a few skate parks together, for this very reason! We had some last year, and they were so fun, rocking up with a group of like minded people just makes you feel that bit more brave. What about you? Do you try new parks? How do you feel about it? I'm late to the party here, but as a result of reading Tough Broad, I discovered @carolinembpaul's earlier book 'Gutsy Girl. If you haven't come across it, it's a manifesto to encourage girls to be adventurous and embrace life, in the same way as we encourage boy's to when they're younger. There are a lot of interesting studies in this space currently that still show we use different language with boys and girls when they are younger (see the Lego ad), and still encourage boys to do more, try more, sometimes inadvertently, sometimes not. In Caroline's Ted Talk (which I'll link in stories) she gives an example of a study with kids and a fire pole. The girls were cautioned against climbing it, the boys actively encouraged to try. What I found interesting was what she said this communicated to both boys and girls - not only to the girls that they couldn't do it, but also that boys wouldn't expect they could either. I try so hard to treat my son and daughter in the same way, encouraging them to be active, adventurous, daring; to brush themselves off when they fall, but I still see there are differences in how they are treated by people. And as women, we pay for this difference later in life, with an internal voice that we have often have to fight. What about you? She talks about it being a 'cultural apparatus' to get outside (she's a BMX-er in her 70's) @carolinembpaul writes about how many of the women she spoke to who were doing more adventurous things in later life were bought into the community side of it, as much as the activity itself. She also talks to how much of modern self-care, because of its inward focus, and leaning towards down-time, is actually detrimental in some ways to us gaining happiness vs. more adventure. As the Olympics approaches, and surfing and skating feature as new categories, we are suddenly awash in adland (my normal space) with brands affiliating themselves to these sports. @Gap with their excellent @Palaceskateboards partnership (who else is rooting for Gap to make a come back? So much to do but this is a good start) @Aviostravel with their sea of floating e-foil surfers positioning their loyalty rewards as something you earn through everyday actions (a slightly more tenuous link, but @uncommon.creative.studio made it beautiful anyway, and I love the music by @futureislands) And @Samsung have sponsored both of the sports, and continue to push their support for communities from the ground up It's a year of focus for these sports for sure, and if it sits alongside more people feeling like they can access them, I think it's a positive thing, but I know that's not how everyone feels (and I'm with them when the sport feels wholly appropriated - see CHANEL's surfing campaigns of last year which just felt clunky). I'm reading Tough Broad by @carolinembpaul in preparation for our interview next week; and there's a chapter where she witnesses the phenomenal Shawn Brokemond @sports_adven base jumping off El Capitan in Yosemite. Shawn is 54 (and was actually caught by the authorities for the jump). She's a former kindergarten teacher who decided in midlife to leave her role and do more with her base jumping hobby. She now coaches older adventure seekers and works to open the door to adventure to black people in particular. She finds that the 40+ people she coaches write off their own potential. So she goes back to what they loved as a kid and leans into elements of that to help them see what they can still achieve, through both physical strength, but most importantly, attitude. Board sports seem to fit so well with this thinking, they are the ultimate in play, in trusting our bodies. What did you love to do as a kid? Do you think about what you wear when you jump on a board? There have been a number of pieces in recent months exposing the well established materials in sports wear as being bad for our health, in addition to the environmental destruction they cause. PFA legislation is a hot topic in the US, where the chemical industry that relies on these materials and supply chains with the biggest sports brands, have spent over $100m trying to thwart the dozens of pieces of legislation banning these 'forever chemicals'. Some brands are seriously stepping up in this space. Unsurprisingly @Patagonia leads them. There's a slew of smaller brands experimenting with alternative materials (but often at a premium); and @Decathlonuk is setting out its stall to eliminate PFC's in production for the more mass market. The big brands in the wetsuit and sports space are pretty lacking though.. What do you think about this space? She's researching her latest film, on the relationship between motherhood and skateboarding, and she's looking for people to talk to about this space - are you interested? We had an awesome chat about the stage after you've had kids where you start to feel a bit more like yourself again, but you've lost a connection between you and your body, and your mind to be honest. And you're looking to feel like you again. And along comes skateboarding. "Youth has claimed these emotions as their own" - I LOVE this quote from "Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking - How Outdoor Adventure Improves our Lives as we Age". This book is released tomorrow, and was sent to me because its inspiring author Caroline Paul @carolinembpaul (also author of The Gutsy Girl) is hopefully coming on to the podcast. It's credited as upending the 'long slow rot theory of aging' and as we embark on a week leading up to International Women's Day on Friday, it feels like a fitting way to kick off a week of content where we celebrate women opening up the conversation of taking risk and embracing board sports in later life. (OK, so I hope we do this every day on here, but we'll double down this week) I'm just getting started on the book, but already the stories are leaping off the page at me, and the sentiment marries with all the reasons why I started Board Women. "Let's face it, our biggest danger may not be a mountain bike, or a surfboard, or saying yes to a tandem skydive. I am lucky enough to be interviewing the inspiring @jomoseley today for the podcast (it will be up live next month) and I couldn't be more excited! If you don't know of Jo, she took up paddle boarding in her 50's and in the same year decided she wanted to paddle board from coast to coast, which she managed to complete in the summer of 2019 at 54, raising awareness of litter in our waterways along the way. She's also just started learning to skateboard. In preparation for the interview, I watched her film about the journey 'Brave Enough' last week. I'm a fan of films about challenges and personal journeys, but this one really touched me. I think what has really sparked people's imagination about Jo is her relatability alongside her bravery. We had someone come to our skate event this weekend who was stepping on a skateboard for the first time in her 50's, and it was because she'd seen Jo do it. The power of 'be what you can see' is tremendous, but even more so when the person feels like someone you might go for a drink with, or know in your day to day life. I'm maybe late to the party, but I watched the film Nyad, on Netflix, this weekend. WHAT A STORY. For those that don't know, it tells the story of Diana Nyad, a world renowned swimmer in the 70's who attempted the never before swum route of Cuba to Florida, and failed. She came back to it in her 60's, finally making it on her 3rd attempt. 53 hours, 110 miles, avoiding sharks and Portuguese Man O' War. Her achievement is mind blowing. I love how the narrative of ageing is being challenged everywhere at the moment. I've always said to my family that I plan to be surfing when I'm 120 (I don't question the 120 part, you'll be dragging me out kicking and screaming). I'm 46, that's a lot of bloody time to try stuff and enjoy myself. (and on the flipside, who knows how long we have...also a good reason to just get out there and give it a go) I far prefer the narrative of: 🏄🏻♀️ I'm not done yet! 🛹 Why don't I just give it a try? 🏂 What if today is my only opportunity? I've been listening to the most brilliant podcast: The Looking Sideways podcast @welooksideways Episode 204 is with Steven Kotler, an expert on flow, author of 'Gnar Country: Growing Old Staying Rad' Allow me to geek out for a second, but I LOVED the concept of this book, as it's so aligned with how I think about ageing and why Board Women exists. He talks about how flow is one of the key drivers of development and how our 'sense of self quiets down in flow. We get more perspective, we get more empathy'. He wanted to understand how flow evolves with ageing, and used his principles to train himself as a 52 year old skier to be able to skate the park (a very different task!). What he demonstrated was that so much of the narrative of decline we've all bought into can actually be staved off in a 'use it or lose it mentality' What I loved most was the way he connected the psychological aspects to the physical, outlining 3 major psychological hurdles that stand in the way of reaching this peak performance flow state as we age. "everything we are talking about comes out of our ability to see multiple perspectives. If you're still carrying grudges and are pissed off, you can't see other perspectives" And best of all, board sports are one of the most effective ways where we can train all the different aspects of our physical and mental self to achieve this state. Another reason to get yourself onto a board! It's 100% worth a listen if you're into the world of longevity, and love these sports. My Northland competition free skate didn't pan out the way I wanted it to, but after looking at the photos, I'm not mad about how I performed. I was *ON* for this skate. These shots show huge *PERFORMANCE* growth. Less concentration on steps, more smiles and all of the expected acting. I'm taking *THAT* as a win. This is the second year that I've competed in Duluth as an adult and the second in a row that I've been sick on this weekend. I'm hoping not to make it three. I'm coming back to skateboarding tonight after a week off after a concussion from a slam last weekend (be aware, concussions can sneak up on you! I thought I was fine and started to feel progressively worse across the week). I don't know about you, but after a week or two off skating, my brain does this weird thing where I start to think I'll have forgotten how to skate! I would never question 'can I remember how to ride a bike' or 'will I still be able to swim', but somehow my screwed up brain + confidence means that I question my basic capability to skate. In no other sport can you achieve something but somehow not have it 'locked'. It's a continual practice, re-practice, and keep it in your repertoire to still be able to do particular tricks. Frustrating, or also the thing that keeps us coming back? Anyone else? Just me? Tell me about it below! May I introduce you to my new skateboard! The deck is one that I got years ago from @tikariskateboards in Finnland, SUCH a great design! I didn’t think I’d ever use it cause it’s so pretty, but now I’m excited! Trucks are @acetrucks af1, @bonesbrigade wheels x-formula 97A, Modus Abec 7 bearings, and thanks to my @santacruzoz rails the design won’t get scratched up too much! All available @jimmysskateandstreet in Hobart, TAS. Thanks to my skatmate Bob who helped me put the rails on, and to @oven.chips for re-doing the grip tape for me. It looks so perfect now. But, one of the things that can make you feel like you’re not a ‘skater’ is being someone who looks like a permanent beginner and there are so many great skaters without helmets or pads. This weekend I took a massive slam in my local (concrete) skate park and oh my god I’ve never been so happy to have had a helmet on! I’m still a tiny bit concussed today and I’m pretty sure I’d have been visiting the local hospital afterwards if I hadn’t been wearing my helmet. I’m ok, and I actually got up straight away and dropped in on the bigger ramp I’d been skating a few more times after, but this helmet isn’t leaving my head any time soon!
