A few years ago I competed with Todd Fox of @tourtraining . Last week he reached out to me to ask if I wanted to teach a private BJJ session to Maynard James Keenan while he was in Raleigh for the Sessanta Tour, commemorating his 60th birthday. It was an honor to be asked, and Maynard is ever the professional when it comes to Jiu Jitsu. Amidst the chaos of my first day reffing a full day for a tournament with different rules than I’m used to (but really enjoyed!), I was able to find a moment to have a little chat with my student Graham, the only one from @schellshockbjj competing at @the_agf Richmond last weekend. Been a busy couple of weeks at Schell Shock BJJ. 2 weeks ago, we had 23 kids and 7 adults compete at the Raleigh @fujibjj tournament. First across the board in kids, adults, and overall. Last weekend we were spread across 3 different competitions. The Bushido super fights, @nagafighter Greensboro, and Fuji Asheville. Several 1st time competitors left it all on the mats and displayed all of the hard work they’ve been putting in at the gym. Plenty of seasoned competitors as well to lead them. Win or lose, everyone fought hard and exemplified excellent Jiu Jitsu. Very thankful to all of the coaches who helped at each of these tournaments, and everyone who supported them in the gym and in person. I have been journaling a lot and facing the reality of my dad issues in therapy. Growing up with my unique father, losing him at a young age, and never really experiencing a healthy relationship has made me crave love and attention in unhealthy way’s. My stepfather has been incredible to our sweet Frankie, but I still miss my father and struggle with my relationships with men in general. This morning, my step dad being at church and showing up meant more to me than I can express. It filled my soul and I am grateful for this special relationship. Thank you, Dad, for being there. Me running away from 2023! Having meaningful relationships requires effort. I am grateful to the few that have put time and effort into our relationships. Honorable mention goes to my brother Jim who checks in often and supports me and my daughter however he can. Can’t thank him enough! Also my friend Ceceli that has been there for me through the loss of my father, my mother and brother. Making sure that I was not alone during the darkest times. Why is this so important to me…? Because meaningful relationships are essential to survival. Statistics show that one in three people, or 33 percent of people in the US experience loneliness on a regular basis. Fifty one percent of mothers of young children / teens also report feeling lonely. One third of single parents felt anxiety due to loneliness (31%). This is compared to 23% of the general population. 13% of single moms have a 50/50 parenting arrangement, and 51% have their children 100% of the time. I belong to the 51%. 9 in 10 single moms say they could earn more money if they had more equality in their co-parenting schedules. I could go on… Leaving behind friends and family that have become acquaintances. Individuals that had access to free information and training. That expires at 11:59 pm, December 31, 2023. I no longer allow people free access to me. I no longer accept less than I deserve. Running towards living life on my terms. To be part of my story one must gain access via mutual effort and respect. The path is clear now that I know where to invest my energy. So to those struggling with loneliness, depression and anger, put your energy into those that actively show interest in your life and show up for you. Student Corey Johnson has lost over 60 lbs on his journey from white belt to blue belt over at Schell Shock BJJ.
