Want to better manage your emotions? In Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), we can use the skill TIPP. The T stands for "Temperature." It involves using temperature to help regulate emotions. This can be done in several ways: Cold Water: Plunging your face into cold water or holding ice cubes in your hands can trigger the dive response, which slows down your heart rate and can help calm intense emotions. Warmth: Taking a warm bath or shower, or wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket can soothe and comfort you when feeling distressed. Temperature Changes: Alternating between hot and cold temperatures, such as using a hot pack followed by a cold pack, can help disrupt overwhelming emotions and bring a sense of balance. Environment: Adjusting the temperature in your surroundings, like opening a window for fresh air or using a fan for coolness, can also influence your emotional state. One of the many ways to look at grief: it does not shrink (upper line) but we grow with and around it. Another way, which I often tell my clients (I think i heard it from @iamdavidkessler podcast, not sure): grief is a red button inside a box with a ball. The button is on the inner wall of the box, and the ball keeps pushing the button. As the time passes, the ball shrinks, and has more and more space inside the box to move. It’s important to eat what you truly want and like, while being conscious of how certain foods make you feel. Do you know the difference between physical and emotional hunger? To begin, physical hunger develops gradually and increases over time while emotional happens suddenly and feels urgent. When we are physically hungry, anything sounds good, while emotional hunger usually craves something specific ex: sweet or salty. Physically hunger usually goes away after you have eaten a substantial meal, but with emotional eating you may not feel satisfied. Emotional eating is usually mindless and frantic and you don’t quite realize all you have consumed until you are done. Sunday, commonly referred to as the day of rest but has also been characterized as the day of “scaries”. So what are the “Sunday Scaries” you may ask? This term refers to the anxiety and dread individuals may feel about returning to work or back into a routine on Monday. These feelings often creep up on us as the weekend winds down. The proper term for this feeling is actually called anticipatory anxiety. The American Psychological Association (APA) defines it as, “worry or apprehension about an upcoming event or situation because of the possibility of a negative outcome, such as danger, misfortune, or adverse judgement by others”. So what can you do to help cope with this anxiety? You can practice self-care by making sure your most basic needs are met. And you can ensure you are providing yourself with self-compassion- try practicing being kinder to yourself and using positive affirmations! Have you heard about mindful movement? It simply means moving your body through physical activity while recognizing the amazing capabilities and potential of your body. Often times individuals can have a harmful and negative relationship with exercise. Exercise can be used as a compensatory behaviour. For some, it can be used as a method to control weight, burn calories or even a form of punishment. Mindful movement takes the stress off moving your body for weight loss or “outcome-focused exercise”, and allows you to focus more on appreciating your body’s abilities. Various studies have found that the prevalence of depression is significantly lower (25-35%) in traditional Mediterranean and Japanese diets compared to a traditional Western diets. #dansiegel used the words “name it to tame it” speaking of trauma and strong feelings, @cathy_malchiodi uses the words each expressive arts therapist (myself, a music therapist, included) can swear by: “express it to address it”. Many times, people just cannot use words to express themselves, this is when arts come to help, being it music, movement, visual arts, play.
