Indigenous Rave Crew 2024 @originallandlords I never dreamt that the look we created 30 years ago would be recreated for fashion shows and a museum! I was creating fashion for our crew so we could stand out at downtown Phoenix warehouse raves. Along the way I learned how to design different silhouettes and styles of garments and I never thought it would take me this far. My design path took me in many different directions but I have to say that the 90’s was where I was able to be most creative. It was in 97-99 when BBOYS and GIRLS were commonplace at raves and battles were now happening in the Hip Hop, Breakbeat and Jungle room. Crews realized there was a movement happening and found a place they could display their skills. The look here is a great example of the style at the time and can still be seen today. THIS is now part of Phoenix’s downtown underground fashion history and will be catalogued as such. Indigenous Rave Crew 2024 @originallandlords The ubiquitous “Skate Betty” look was always a staple in the streetwear and rave scene of the 90’s. There were A LOT of brands that capitalized off this look and took off around this time. It’s not really a style and is based off of comfort and practicality more than anything. Being able to do whatever at a moments notice requires the right fit and this one is a reliable one. It was during this time when most girls in the rave scene were very modest in dress and style. There was an acronym that was used called P.L.U.R. which stood for Peace, Love, Unity, Respect that is missing in today’s electronic music culture. The scantily clad rave-ettes with fur covered boots and the dreaded Chief Headdress would come 10-15 years later. Old dusty warehouses in sketchy parts of town were no longer the desired playground and festivals sprouted up across the globe. Indigenous Rave Crew 2024 @originallandlords The t-shirt is how I got into the fashion industry back in 1995 when I received an airbrush for my 15th birthday. Having no clue how to use it I experimented and practiced for months figuring out the proper method of using it. This was a far cry from the cans of aerosol I was using to paint with at the time but the technique was similar. Soon, I was painting t-shirts to wear to school along with my baseball cap, backpack, pager (yeah I’m THAT old) and jeans. Kids would ask where I got my gear and after telling them I did it myself I was taking orders. This is how I got started doing what I do today and it was by creating my own brand as a teenager. I had entered the world of fashion not knowing this was the start to the rest of my life. Had I known all those years ago that I’d be doing a collaboration with the Phoenix @suns I’d never believe you. I never in a million years ever thought @nike would be calling me or that I’d design my own cycling apparel with @theheavypedal or collaborating with some of my fashion heroes like @j.okuma for SWAIA @santafeindianmarket IN 2022. Indigenous Rave Crew 2024 @originallandlords What made these pants so popular and coveted was because of how comfortable they were. We used material like velour, fuzzy fur, plush fleece and crushed velvet. We also made custom pockets and little “stash” spots in the hemlines for our custom orders. Everyday after school my friend Nasif and I would meet at his house where he had two sewing machines. We’d both be drawing out patterns, cutting and sewing til Friday night fulfilling orders and making special pieces for us to wear. By the end of the party we’d have orders that would keep us busy the next week. This was 1996 and I was Junior in high school, I had no idea that what we were doing was creating a fashion trend. We were just having fun being creative and dressing up in a new outfit every weekend. Camo was BIG not just in Hip Hop but in the Jungle scene and a more rugged and tough aesthetic had taken hold. Indigenous Rave Crew @originallandlords Around 1999 the look of our crew started to change, we were a little older and our fashion sense had gone from extremely huge fitting tees and pants to more casual and comfortable fitting gear. A lot of tracksuits hit the scene while the culture went mainstream and MEGA raves were now being produced. The dirty warehouse vibe was out and clean clubs, drugs and Paul Oakenfold was now where we were at. Our style changed from outrageous to a scaled back more sophisticated one, and so did our music taste. By now, we all were out of high school and some of us had jobs or were in college, the carefree days of LIVING for the party were over. We now needed clothing we could wear on the daily. Indigenous Rave Crew 2024 @originallandlords • @rvso78 Back when we were trying to get FRESH with our fits we shopped at second hand stores where we could create something for under $20. We were a crew of multicultural street kids and we didn’t have much but we did have style! Sometimes we’d come across a pair of motorcycle pants or a jersey and that was like finding GOLD! A lot of what we were emulating were styles coming from NYC that we seen in films like KIDS and Hackers which is one of the movies that made me want to work with computers. This particular look utilizes motocross pants paired with a dye sublimation printed All-Over Hockey Jersey, sneakers and a lot of turquoise and silver. Indigenous Rave Crew @originallandlords • @rvso78 There was a time in the rave scene (1997-1999) when the fashion industry took notice of the style we created and started manufacturing the pants we were making at home. The era of the “Candy Raver” was being replaced by a refined sporty look that included Polo Sport, Tommy Hilfiger, Helly Hansen and a slew of streetwear brands like @triple5soul @tribalstreetwear @xgirlus @xlarge_us and a bunch of skare brands. Our crew followed suit and we’d pair oversized denim with Polo shirts and five panel caps or @kangol pieces. This was the era of “BOOSTING” and being kids from the Rez or the Hood, we didn’t have $120 for a knit shirt so they were shoplifted instead. This was also a period where Hip Hop was making a tremendous comeback and infiltrated the rave scene.
