HighLighting Libby Smart in our Current Show/ Come anytime.....Mon-Fri 11-5pm & Sat 11-4pm I would describe myself as a colorist who sees beyond what most people see in nature. A painting is about brushwork and color, not just painting what you see but making it exciting so the viewer is constantly intrigued. Drawing the viewer into a painting is what I think about, sometimes it's the subject matter I start with but then the end result is how I place the colors and brushstrokes that make the painting come to life. Although my style has changed and evolved over the years, my approach has always been the same. I don't use a formula and never over think what I am working on, instead I try and dive right in, letting it evolve. My approach is to find subject matter that speaks to me and then paint it with my own approach in mind, adding what I think will make it come to life. People often make the comment "your paintings make me happy." Within the pages, you find talks of new projects looking out from his studio window to the things and people that inspire him. He says of "The Pier", 30x54 (shown here & available): “With some paintings, I know what I want, and I try to achieve that. And other paintings start speaking back to me,” he says. As he painted it, childhood memories of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, came into play: “In this old rowboat, we’d go over the waves. And in doing this painting, that came in… ahh, maybe that’s where I am. INTRODUCING our newest member of the City Art Gallery family - Carolyn Blaylock! Carolyn Blaylock’s effervescence for life clearly comes across in her abstract dreamscape paintings. Full of life and resplendent color, she takes you on an imaginative stroll with nature’s shapes and sounds. Carolyn’s lifelong love of color and nature began in pre-school with boxes of crayons and jars of gooey finger paints. Blessed with parents and teachers who encouraged her artistic curiosity, she experimented and filled walls with art and winning ribbons. Her passion for painting compelled her onward to the University of Georgia where she majored in advertising design and minored in studio painting. After graduating, she spent a few years in the advertising arena before returning full time to her love of painting. She immersed herself in studying the works of the American and California impressionists, and especially the color work of Wolf Kahn. Like them, Carolyn concentrated on seeing and conveying the effects of color and light on forms. Her inspiration remains steady: the Creator, color, nature and their connection to the human spirit. Accolades and awards have followed her from coast to coast, but what she finds most rewarding is seeing the light and life on faces when they view her artworks. Whether in her bright sunroom studio or in the wide open air of the outdoors, she’ll be wearing her signature pearls, armed with a paintbrush in one hand and palette knife in the other, both loaded with color and ready to spread joy. “I want to make every color memorable, every brushstroke compelling. My goal is to connect with the viewer’s soul through Dreamscapes that hint of water, flora, fauna, and light. The paintings express my enthusiasm for life, and the wonder I find in creation, rather than an intentional description of nature." On your mark. Get set. Go! When Hilarie Lambert painted "The Waiter" (10x8) the last time she was in Paris, perhaps what she didn't know is that he was in training for the return of the "Courses des cafes" after a 13 year absence. The French capital resurrected the 110 year old race this past Sunday, in which waitstaff across the city donned their uniform, grabbed a tray with a croissant, coffee cup and glass of water, then made a mad dash around the 1 1/4 mile course to finish without breaking, spilling, or eating. Though the race was initially begun back in 1914 to promote the cafes and restaurants of Paris, this year also serves to help promote sport and the "excellence of French service" as the city rounds the final corners in its race to prepare for hosting duties of this year's Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games which begin a mere 122 days away. Let the countdown begin! Last month, after watching DJ Benyosef’s class at @cedar_creek_gallery , my cousin @lauriebley took me to Hillsborough Gallery of the Arts, owned and operated by artists and craftspeople, to see glass work by Pringle Teetor. She was holding the video camera during the lesson. We wandered around the gallery, more and more amazed with our discoveries. Such delicate spirals and deep colors. The fascinating story of how @cedar_creek_gallery came into existence in 1968 can be found here: cedarcreekgallery.com/pages/about In brief, it was founded by Sid and Pat Oakley as a place for them to make pottery and to encourage other artists. Besides the 4,000 square feet gallery that displays hundreds of artworks by U.S. and Canadian artists, the expansive grounds have antique buildings that were moved there to provide studios for other artists. I was there just a bit too early for Spring’s profusion of flowers. The founders’ daughter, Lisa Oakley, is a master glassblower in her own right. Here are exquisite works by Lisa Oakley, as are her murrini vases on the website. So very sorry I missed meeting her. The online store shows what living artists are featured in the gallery. During our road trip last month, my cousin @lauriebley took us to some marvelous art places in North Carolina. One was Hillsborough Gallery of the Arts, which is owned and operated by artists and craftspeople. The artist on duty was Ryannn Carey. I asked her to show me her work. This first image was a painting I had been studying because I was trying to puzzle out how the artist had captured waterdrops of many shades on several layers of washes. At first, I had thought it was an atmospheric photograph. This photo does not capture her mastery of masking. Ryann is also experimenting with cyanotype, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she does with it. Libby grew up in Greensboro so this is extra special to be having a show with her here. Come see this fabulous body of work...here are just a few but to see them all hanging together is awesome! Artist Statement-Libby Smart I would describe myself as a colorist who sees beyond what most people see in nature. A painting is about brushwork and color, not just painting what you see but making it exciting so the viewer is constantly intrigued. Drawing the viewer into a painting is what I think about, sometimes it's the subject matter I start with but then the end result is how I place the colors and brushstrokes that make the painting come to life. Although my style has changed and evolved over the years, my approach has always been the same. I don't use a formula and never over think what I am working on, instead I try and dive right in, letting it evolve. My approach is to find subject matter that speaks to me and then paint it with my own approach in mind, adding what I think will make it come to life. People often make the comment "your paintings make me happy." If I have done just that, then I feel like the painting was a success.
