Enzi Hizo: Visual Storytelling, Graphite on Paper @_xaha_creates_ At some particular point in time I thought this was one of the best designed Land Rovers or 4x4s EVER! This Defender, and the old FJ Cruiser stole my heart and nurtured in me a love for little cars with big feet, and big hearts, that can climb rocks, wade through swampland and sail through the savannah seas with a grunting, mechanical grace inversely proportional to the amount of cursing from the driver. It would always get you there, maybe a day or two later, but you would get there! This undefeatable vehicle conquered the terrain, while turning seasoned drivers into effective mechanics. Used by everybody that needed to go past where the roads just stop. The rural doctors, civil servants, military, explorers, adventurers, preppers, etc. those were beautiful days. I drew so many of these as a young child that their form will forever be imprinted in my brain. Truly beautiful days! I guess that little confession has just confirmed that we don't need carbon dating equipment to figure out my age! Last week I found 3 misplaced drawing tucked in an old sketchbook. Tucking is something I do when moving to keep tiny works flat and protected by sizable pages and hard covers. This past week I went in my supply cupboard for a pad of drawing paper, to check size and how much was available. There I found a stash of small pads I forgot about, the type used for my EFFICACIES series. In 3 of the 5 pads I found drawings from 2017 which I had no memory of. When we digitized the EFFICACIES after moving to our current abode and studio in 2018, we worked with the 30 that were packed together in chronology, never thinking to check the pads from which they came. On the left here, a completed tour de force from the series. On the right a work that was in progress I finished the day after it was discovered. The third is a sweet fragment, two disparate graphic thoughts coexisting and connecting…. Likely to be left artifactually for the inherent eloquence. Saving it for another post. Moving is hard. There are losses happening, even as the new blessings unfold. Rare it is to discover lost treasure like this. Typically, most people ask me about pragmatic details about the work. I once drew live during the Night of the Museum. It was a very nice night in the company of open-minded people who were very curious in my work. I remember that it surprised me, some people sat in the room for a very long time watching me draw, I didn't think it could be interesting. It also didn't embarrass me, probably because when I focus on something, I soundproof everything else. I was making a several-meter-long drawing there, and due to the fact that I dirty the floor while working with the falling graphite and remains of the eraser, I attached the paper under the drawing. The children willingly borrowed materials from me and drew on this paper. Visitors notoriously asked me how I washed my hands, whether graphite did not dry out the skin, etc. I drew like this for over 8 years several times a week, washing my hands was breakneck, it sensitized the skin and the graphite went deeper and deeper. The constant rubbing of fingers on the paper worn down nails and skin. From a certain point when creating the drawings, I rubbed graphite into my hands, and this is how the rhythm, repetition and size of the traces were created, through the anatomy and the size of the fingertips. I also used my whole hand to create wider marks, or knuckles to get thinner ones. The size of the works was involuntarily enlarging in direct proportion to the size of the traces, and I felt as if I was dancing in front of a piece of paper stretched all over the wall. My eraser was also huge, it looked like a bar of soap. At the beginning of drawing, I often used both hands simultaneously, I had the impression that I was performing a opening ritual, it was incredibly calming and cleansing. Minutes passed when I looked at the drawing while sitting or standing at a distance from it, and sometimes during several hours of sessions I added a few traces. It may seem exaggerated or mannered. In retrospect, I can see that the more freedom I had, the more time I spent looking than drawing, these works seem to me to be the most interesting, the composition is right and the traces are spot-on. MEET OUR ARTISTS Today: Austen Camille Shown artwork: Bathypterois grallator 2023 Acrylic and graphite on paper. 18"x24" This artwork is part of a series created while in residence with the Invertebrate Department at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. These pieces have been created for a collaborative project between artists and oceanographers, called "The Immersion Project", that aims to bring the public closer to the deep sea and cold water coral ecosystems. Austen Camille is a Canadian-American public artist fostering reciprocal, regenerative relationships between built and natural environments, with a focus on rural communities. Recent projects include site-specific public art/AR installations supported by The Nature Conservancy in Sheridan, WY, and by the New York State Water Resources Institute at the Greenport Conservation Area in Hudson, NY. Adjacent to their art practice, Camille has also organized a transdisciplinary conversation series across Temple University and created the podcast ‘Our Shared Field,’ which brings artists into conversation with people from outside of the arts. Camille holds an MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University.
