Winning The Sun Located on the side of Cau river, Van village in Van Ha commune, Bac Giang province, is home to mud ball wrestling, an original sport which can be found nowhere else in Vietnam. The traditional mud ball wrestling festival is held from the 12th to the 14th of the fourth lunar month every four years. It reminds people of their need for weather benefiting the culture of rice. Water and mud are central to this celebration. 16 local men play a special type of rugby, with a large ball representing the sun. The game is played on a muddy field. Smart, fearless, resourceful, savvy, a survivalist, a daring opportunist who's traits made it a perfect candidate to represent Baltimore Football. The Raven is a large black bird that I literally witnessed going head to head with a grizzly fighting over a bison carcass. This particular guy had no fear as he approached me as I froze trying to photograph ducks in a pond as the bitter cold blustery snow fell in Yellowstone. The day we traveled from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, it came a winter storm. We had to cross Teton Pass before it became too treacherous. We made it safe and decided to scope things out at Yellowstone. Winter had hit hard and the Ravens were some of the first wildlife we saw. I was thrilled when he approached me. I know he was looking for food (but feeding the wildlife is a no-no) but I got a rare opportunity to see the beautiful details of this ominous avian. Here is a closeup of Edger Allen Poe's muse of obsession. I think he was trying to convince me to give him some of the dang food he knew we had in our car. But, his raised brow wasn't going to intimidate me. He may have driven Poe crazy, be he wasn't going to get to me. He flapped around and as he croaked and cawed at me. I didn't give in so he lost interest and flew away. “The power of photography to tell stories well is amazing. A good photograph can literally change the world. Whether your thing is to help save dogs and cats down at the local animal shelter, or to celebrate a clean beach, there’s nothing like putting your photos to work. Sometimes you have to get up close and personal with animals, like I did with this juvenile caiman, to get an intimate portrait. I photographed this gopher tortoise along a four-lane highway near Wiggins, Mississippi. I wanted to illustrate the risk of the journey and have this image say something about the threats facing this species. Fortunately, he wasn’t the fastest guy in the world, so I was able to wait until action came into the frame I’d envisioned. “What do you have in there for me?” 😄🦬 The European bison is one of Europe’s most heartening wildlife recovery stories. Once widespread across the continent, this magnificent animal was driven to the edge of extinction in the early twentieth century by hunting and habitat loss. After the Ice Age, man hunted the bison so intensively that it was forced into the most remote corners of Europe. The last wild animals were killed by soldiers and poachers in the early 20th century. The last wild bison in Europe died in Poland in 1919, while the last wild bison in the Russian Caucasus died in 1927. The species only survived thanks to 54 animals that were kept in different zoos, originating from only 12 founder animals. In 1954 the first bison were released back into the wild in the Białowieża forest in Poland, followed by reintroductions in several other countries. In the last 10 years, the number of free-roaming European bison has increased from just over 2500 to around 7000 individuals. However, the species is still at risk, and is listed as ‘near threatened’ on the IUCN Red List.

“We just arrived at the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, which hosts thousands of native, resident and migratory birds. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971 and due to its exceptional avian biodiversity, it is UNESCO site since 1985. The park also features an artificial wetland as a source of hydration for any animals in this drier region and it protects from flash floods and provides ample pastures for the locals' cattle and livestock, as we can see now. We came for the birds but we like to photograph the cattle too”. Given its rather centralized location, where the desert meets the tropics, the park is bursting with biodiversity. Beyond hundreds of bird species, at least 20 fish, 70 reptile and amphibian, 50 mammalian and over 60 unique species of Lepidopterans have been seen here, in addition to the more than 1,000 invertebrate species.
