🎨Originally painted in the mid-eleventh century under a workshop master from Constantinople, the middle Byzantine frescoes of the Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) in Göreme (Korama) are the best preserved in Cappadocia. Studies since Spiros Kristoff’s definitive work suggest that at least two other cave churches were painted by the same hand. 🌿Beginning with Palm Sunday - the entry to Jerusalem- celebrated today in Orthodox calendar, the frescoes around the chapel commemorate the key events leading up to the Resurrection. The scenes are a visual calendar of the chronological events of the week ahead and up to the Ascension (with the exception of the raising of Lazarus, yesterday, which I’ve placed after Palm Sunday). 1. Palm Sunday, entry to Jerusalem (today) 2. Raising of Lazarus (yesterday) 3. The Last Supper (Thursday) 4. Th Kiss of Judas (Thursday) 5. The Crucifixion (Friday) 6. The Resurrection (Saturday Eve, Sunday morning) 7. The Ascension and the Benediction of the Apostles 🐣In the Byzantine period, the chapel was dedicated to the Ascension of Christ, celebrated 40 days after Pascha. The fresco of the Ascension is to the right of the main apse and includes two of the benefactors of the church in the scene of the Benediction, the final blessing of the Apostles. #fresco #byzantine #byzantinefresco #byzantineart #middlebyzantine #cavechurch #goreme #cappadocia #churchoftheascension #lastsupper #resurrection #palmsunday #ascension #darkchurch #greekcappadocia #byzantinecappadocia #easter #byzantinechurches #korama #easter2024 #byzantineicon #byzantineiconography #history #crucifixion #asiaminor #anatolia #socialhistory #culturalhistory

The Church of Panagia Kapnikarea is a small Byzantine church in Athens, dating back in its earliest phases to the 11th century. It was probably built on the ruins of an ancient temple, that some have said was dedicated to Athena or Demeter. There is also a legend associating it with the 8th century Empress Irene, or the even earlier Empress Eudocia (Theodosius II), but these remain uncorroborated by the existing remains. The church was, it seems, named after its dedicator, "who introduced the smoking tax (Kapnikaris)". Despite its small size, it seems to have been a bit of a landmark. If you Google the church it shows up in travel diaries from the 19th century and earlier. _________ #byzantinechurch #byzantinechurches #byzantine #byzantineathens #middlebyzantine #byzantinearchitecture #kapnikarea #byzantinestyle #byzantineempire #athenschurch #athensgreece #athens #medievalgreece #medievaleurope #middleages #medievalarchitecture #medievalchurch #medievalchurches #medieval #greece #historyblogger #historyblog #publichistory #canadianbackpacker #2019 #vacation #august

I’ve been procrastinating so here are some of my favorite from last summer. Favorite place in Macedonia, Ohrid 😍 known for once having 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem of the Balkans". "Franco-Byzantine" Church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Merkada, near Argos. Built in the late 13th century when the region was under Frankish rule. Gorgeous small structure with remains of the original frescoes, reuse of earlier marble reliefs, use of fine contemporaneous ceramic bowls (bacini) as exterior wall decoration. The brick decoration in the upper wall almost looked like pseudo-kufic frieze. Had to phone in advance to make sure it could be opened by "Papa Ioannis". Kids were angels despite 36 degrees heat... #greece #byzantium #middleages #middlebyzantine #franks #crusades #church #dormitionofthevirgin #architecture #argos #bacini

The rock carved “Dark Church” (Karanlik Kilisi) in Cappadocia’s Göreme valley houses some of the best preserved Byzantine frescoes due to the scant light that enters the interior, giving the rock church its modern toponym. Carved into rock formed by lava and volcanic ash, the structure is illuminated by only a narrow skylight, keeping its C11th frescoes well protected from exposure to the elements. The church is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ, celebrated 40 days after Pascha, with a fresco of the Ascension (2) to the right of the main apse. The frescoes include the Entry into Jerusalem (2, centre), the Archangel Michael protecting the benefactors of the church (3, left), Saints Konstantinos and Eleni (3, right) and a beautifully detailed scene of the Last Supper (4). #fresco #byzantine #byzantinefresco #byzantineart #middlebyzantine #cavechurch #goreme #cappadocia #churchoftheascension #lastsupper #konstantinosandeleni #constantineandhelen #ascension #darkchurch #greekcappadocia #byzantinecappadocia #byzantineempire #byzantinechurches #goremeopenairmuseum #archangelmichael #byzantineicon #byzantineiconography #history #historical #asiaminor #anatolia #socialhistory #culturalhistory #historygram

I had to go back to the museum room several times to ogle this gold and cloissoné bracelet dating to the 9th or 10th century A.D. It is so pretty and must have looked fantastic when it was new! I learned a new and quite fantastic word today: ‘pseudo-sarcophagus’! If you couldn’t quite afford a real sarcophagus carved from one large block of marble, you could mount slabs of marble on a structure made of cheaper material, such as clay or brick, and thus pretend you could afford a real sarcophagus ! I saw several such slabs today in the excellent Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki, and - pseudo or not - they are really quite beautiful. Here is one with a bird eating grapes, and palmettoes (11.-12. centuries) and a slightly earlier one with a griffin. #sarcophagus #sarcophage #sarkofag #stonecarving #stenhuggeri #relief #stonerelief #middlebyzantine #byzantineart #thessaloniki #stonecutting #palmetto #marmor #marblerelief #museumofbyzantineculture #visitgreece #griffin #byzans #byzantine #middlebyzantine #salonica #greekart #palmette #sculpture

Located on a hillside overlooking majestic rose-coloured valleys and the rock-cut settlement of Çavuşin Village below, the church of St John the Baptist is one of the oldest in Cappadocia. Çavuşin is a small village between Göreme (Γκιόρεμε, also Κόραμα) and Avanos (Άβανος, possibly “Venessa” in ancient times) near Niğde in the province of Nevşehir. Known locally as “Vaftizci Yahya Kilisesi” (St John Church), this is one of the less frequented among Cappodocia’s ancient sites. The hilltop church can only be reached by foot from Çavuşin village, by following a steep and narrow 300 metre path and crossing a shaky wooden footbridge. While the original structure dates to the fifth century, in 965, the single room of the church was extended to create three sections with a basilica consisting of a central nave and side aisles. Today, many of these structures have completely collapsed. Çavuşin was known as Kodessane in the Byzantine period, and up until the Population Exchange of the 1920s, it was a village of Rüm Cappadocian families. Many of their original dwellings are no longer inhabited. With Göreme and Avanos, Çavuşin was part of the Rüm ecclesiastical community of Niğde. There are faded frescoes inside the church that also date to the tenth century, the period of the Byzantine reconquest of Cilicia under the Emperor Nikepheros II. These include a fresco of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael at the entrance, and a scene with the figure of Salome and the death of St John the Baptist. With the Synaxis of St John following Epiphany, the Christmas season has come to an end, and it’s time for us to take down the tree. Wishes to all those celebrating, and a very merry Christmas to my Coptic, Armenian and Orthodox friends who celebrate today🎄🌟🎄✨🎄💫 🌿The Entrance to St John the Baptist, Çavuşin. 🌿Faded frescoes inside the building with the beheading of St John the Baptist. 🌿The facade of the church with Çavuşin village below. 💦 #stjohnthebaptist #stjohn #epiphany #theophany #twelvedaysofchristmas #fresco #byzantine #byzantinefresco

Middle Byzantine or Islamic gold bead necklace, circa 8thC to 9thC CE. The necklace has seventeen beads composed of gold sheet cut out to form openwork designs embellished by filigree and granulation, some with circles with cruciform motifs and some with circles within circles, round and oval bezels vertically between, now set with turquoise and blue glass, interspersed with turquoise beads; the necklace has been re-strung with a modern hook-and-loop closure. Byzantine Athens. Specifically, the "Middle Byzantine" period, when the medieval "Romans" temporarily rebounded from the opening centuries of civil war and conquest that followed the Arab invasions of the 7th and 8th centuries. Athens saw a number of small churches built in a style characteristic of this period. These survive fairly well, unlike some of the later medieval material cleared out by early archaeologists looking for remnants of the ancient city. _________________ #byzantineempire #byzantinegreece #byzantineathens #byzantinechurch #middlebyzantine #medievalgreece #medievalathens #medievaleurope #medievalworld #middleages #medieval #byzantine #medievalchurches #medievalchurch #medievalarchitecture #byzantinestyle #byzantinearchitecture #athensgreece #athenscity #athens #greece #greek #historyblog #historyblogger #publichistory #canadianbackpacker

The Greek city of Byzantion was re-dedicated as Constantinople #OnThisDay in the year 330 CE by Roman emperor Constantine I, in which the capital of the Empire shifted from its historic seat in Rome. This event is anachronistically referred to in the late 10th- or early 11th-century CE mosaic in the vestibule of Hagia Sophia, in which Constantine and Justinian (dressed as Middle Byzantine emperors) respectively present miniature versions of the city and the church to the Mother of God. Repertoires and representations depicting Sts. Constantine and Helen with the cross. The representation of “The True Cross flanked by Sts. Constantine and Helen” dates to the Middle Byzantine period. While portraits of the emperor and his mother were made in the Early Byzantine period, it was not until the post-iconoclastic ninth century that the image of the pair with the cross began to appear frequently. Natalia Teteriatnikov identifies two repertoires: the first shows the saints holding the cross, while the second is an altered representation that was used on church vaults with the saints displayed on either side of the vault with a medallion enclosing the cross in their hands. The first representation is recognisable in contemporary icons. It can be seen in the first two images here: the first, a tenth century fresco from the Göreme cave church “Yilanli Kilise” in Cappadocia, and the second a thirteenth century fresco from the Church of St Nikolaos at Maza, Crete. The second representation, a fresco with a vault in the middle (third image) is from the Church of St John (Ayvali Kilise) in Güllüdure, Cappadocia. Photo Credits 1. Yilanli Kilise, Cappadocia. The Byzantine cave churches of Göreme (Γκιόρεμε/Κόραμα) near Ürgüp (Προκόπιο/Προκόπι) in the Nevşehir Province. The cave churches and their frescos date from the ninth to the twelfth centuries. The photograph, taken by photographer Jane Laroche in 1960, has a handwritten description in French on the back which notes that more than 3,000 churches had been counted in this valley alone. The Greek name for Göreme is Gioreme (Γκιόρεμε), from the Ancient Greek name of the area, Korama (Κόραμα). In the Byzantine period the area was known as Matiani or Matiana (Ματιανή or Μαριανά). A fresco on the north wall of the late eleventh century Church of Agia Barbara (Barbara Kilise) in Göreme, Cappadocia depicting Sts. George and Theodore on horseback. Financed by the priest Falibon and Leon Marulinus whose names appear on an inscription, the interior of the Agia Barbara cave church is known for the distinctive red lines of the geometric designs that feature on its walls. The earliest identified figures of saints as cavalry figures are those found in the rock churches of Cappadocia, including one I shared in a previous post from Yilanli Kilesi (the so-called “Snake” Church, also sometimes referred to as the Church of St George) at #Gorëme. Dated to the early or middle eleventh century, it is similar to this fresco from the Church of Agia Barbara with the figures of St George and St Theodore on horseback fighting a bicephalous serpent. #fresco #byzantine #byzantinefresco #byzantineart #middlebyzantine #cavechurch #goreme #cappadocia #agiabarbara #agiosgeorgios #agiostheodoros #stTheodore #stgeorge #stbarbara #greekcappadocia #byzantinecappadocia #byzantineempire #byzantinechurches #cavalry #byzantinecavalry #byzantineicon #byzantineiconography #history #historical #asiaminor #anatolia #socialhistory #culturalhistory #historygram

How should we talk about the biography of an art object? Is “biography” even the correct term, as if an artwork has a biological birth, life, death, and afterlife— suggesting that the phase following the moment of creation, and its ultimate removal and recontextualization has less agency? This roundel at @dumbartonoaks, formerly in Venice in the 19th century — and its counterpart, embedded in a wall near Campiello de Ca’ Angaran in Venice — are assumed to come from Constantinople; scholars have suggested the Byzantine Emperor John II Komnenos or Alexios I Komnenos (ca. 1110–18 CE) as the depicted figure. While we might assume they were taken by the Venetians in 1204 CE following the Fourth Crusade, Gudrun Bühl has convinced me that one of these could be a Venetian copy of the other. Regardless, they have informed Venetian visual culture with a Byzantine paradigm for centuries, demonstrating that “afterlife” may not be the most apt way to evoke their power. #objectbiography #byzantineart #spolia #venetianart #4thcrusade #johniikomnenos #komneniandynasty #middlebyzantine #medievalart #recontextualization #artoftheday #instaart #veneziadavivere #campiellocaangaran #venice #venezia #mimesis #veneto #pathwaysofportability #museumcollection #dumbartonoaks #loros #pallium #jewels #enamel #superhumeral #bling #scepter #orbiscruciger

“No less—indeed much greater—is the power of sight. For surely, having somehow through the outpouring and effluence of the optical rays touched and seen encompassed the object, it too sends the essence of the thing seen on to the mind, letting it be conveyed from there to the memory for the concentration of unfailing knowledge. Has the mind seen? Has it grasped? Has it visualized? Then it has effortlessly transmitted the forms of memory.” —Photios, Homily 17, Holy Saturday, 867 CE (English translation by Cyril Mango) 👁 Today, the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates Photios, 9th-century Patriarch of Constantinople, intellectual and iconophile and patron of the arts, whose Homily above (delivered for the dedication of the apse mosaic depicting the Theotokos and Christ Child in Hagia Sophia) has captivated Byzantine art historians and image theorists since ✨ #photios #photius #patriarch #patriarchofconstantinople #9thcentury #macedoniandynasty #middlebyzantine #imagetheory #vision #medievalvision #theoriesofvision #mosaic #theotokos #byzantineart #hagiasophia #mosaici #homily17 #cyrilmango #visionandmemory #byzantinearchitecture #iconoclasm #medievalart #artoftheday #instaart #medievalromans #easternromans #virginandchild #apse #middleages #istanbul

The Church of Saint Nicholas Rangavas is another example of the small Byzantine churches that dot the city of Athens. It dates back to the early 11th century, placing it solidly in the middle Byzantine period in Athenian history. Like many medieval structures, the church incorporates a lot of ancient material. Medieval Athens was dominated by the Acropolis fortress. The contraction of the city that occurred in Late Antiquity seems to have abated by the middle Byzantine period. New residential neighbourhoods spread out in the north and south of the city, but still within the boundaries of the Roman walls. ref. ENG/RUS Today is 6th day of #fallforcostume2021 and reenactment of 18th century can celebrates because the theme is ruffles. Early Medieval doesn't recognize ruffles! ENG/RUS 👇 5th day of #fallforcostume2021 challenge, Nature is in center It's is easy and it's difficult. All we do in reenactment is re-make old culture and only culture. As my teachers said: culture is all that is not nature But festivals are going on nature and we can enjoy its pleasure full. Enjoy rainbow on Abalak field 2019 festival (Tobolsk) with me;)

#fallforcostume2021 day 4 Blue theme ENG/RUS👇 Blue means indigo. In Middle Ages indigo blue textiles played important role for emphasizing high status or wealth. In medieval reenactment blue is very popular colour. Why? It's easy😀 first you sew white dress. Then dye it with madder because white dress cannot be washed after festival season.. then you dye it with indigo because your madder dress cannot be washed after next festival season😅 as I do! One my tunic dyeing history from 2016 to 2018 in carousel What is happened on first photo?) I'm just trying on 100 cubit wide viking trousers!)

I gave birth to my baby in June, so festival season galloped past me this year #fallforcostume2021 day 3, theme Last is my last event, that was in August 2020 in Gnezdovo. There were rain, fog, activity, alcohol and gossip. However, nothing new. #fallforcostume2021 Fisrt theme ENG/RUS👇 I open this theme as my first event in my first "byzatnine" costume in 2009 Jol in Eletz. Unfortunately noone said me that historical reenactment needs historical sources and documents, but the result was fine: white linen undertunic, red wool dalmatica and blue cloak (as i understood maphorion. Wrong). Anyway costume was fine and the event were full of laughing and happiness

Various closure slabs from the 10th to the 12th century give a sense of how the middle Byzantine period drew on its cultural surrounds from the mythical creatures of classical antiquity to eastern influences from the Arab and Persian worlds. Fantastical creatures and vegetal motifs typically adorned the closure slabs, chancel screens and cornices, showing the ways in which it related to its surrounds as a space between the Latin West and the Muslim East. . . . #Byzantine #byzantineart #middlebyzantine #closureslab #mythicalcreatures #reliefcarving #marble #orthodox #islam #classicalantiquity #easternmediterranean #thessaloniki
