2/2 - (Check out 1/2 for the ✨breathtaking✨ views before the algorithm makes me cry and the disproportionate amount of likes leads me to believe you prefer me doing stupid shit (and over-editing it) as opposed to spending time in nature) Death Valley Redux: Had a blast visiting the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere at -282ft, camping at 4,200ft, climbing to 11,043ft, and everything in between. Rode a TON of miles (including the NPS Star Wars film location self-guided tour 🤓) with awesome views of the valley and twisty ascents into the mountains, saw a crazy amount of stars and a surprising amount of really pretty flowers and animals (including my first wild rattlesnake encounter which I was pretty calm for, and wild burros that scared the shit out of me). Limped away on day 9 after a blown tire (potentially caused by the angry spirit of a rabbit I accidentally road-killed 😬) cut my trip short and destroyed any semblance of a budget, including nixing my nascent plan to cap off my trip by drinking a shower beer and getting bathed at the nearby Alien Cathouse Brothel (maybe next time). In the valley below my campsite, 50+ mph winds were creating an epic sandstorm. A wall of sand and dust a mile long and hundreds of feet in the air was making its way across the desert floor. A scene straight out of the movie Hildago was taking shape. The Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley were beckoning me to an adventure up and over her violently sand-blown landscape. In the Wild, as in life itself, sometimes the worst conditions provide the best opportunities. As I traversed the dunes, sheets of sand blew up and over the ridges of each dune. The violent storm propelled stinging grains of sand as if tiny bullets collided with my bare-skinned noggin, forcing me back two steps with every few gained. Within the chaos, an inescapable beauty began to emerge as I settled and allowed myself to feel my surroundings. Time slowed, awareness presented itself, acceptance took over, and the clouds formed magnificently as the sun began to set, giving the sky and the land a brilliant tapestry of indescribable color. First time checking out the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley. Super windy day which erased all the footprints in the sand and created sand snakes slithering up over the dunes sand blasting my ankles. Such a cool effect watching them hit the crest of the dunes and puff into sand clouds. As we arrived, I knew I had to hike out to the furthest dune out there. Roadtrip West USA (deel 2)Death Valley & Las Vegas Vanuit Yosemite rijden we door naar de staat Nevada, een lange reisdag, zodra Death Valley in zicht komt veranderd het landschap spectaculair. Death Valley is een woestijn van zandduinen, sneeuw bedekte bergen, verschillend gekleurde rotslagen, met zoutwater gevulde kreekjes en drie miljoen hectare wildernis. We overnachten net buiten het park in een hotel met een lekker zwembad. De volgende ochtend bezoeken we nog wat mooie uitzichtpunten in Death Valley, helaas veranderd het weer en begint het flink te regen en onweren, heel bijzonder want Death Valley is een van de droogste plekken op aarde en in de zomer kan de temperatuur zelfs oplopen tot ruim 50⁰C. Per jaar wordt er maar 5 cm regen gemeten. Vanuit Death Valley rijden we in 2 uur naar Las Vegas. Vanuit de lege woestijn rijst ineens een immense, verlichte skyline op. In het hart van de stad ligt The Strip: een aaneenschakeling van casino’s, neonverlichte clubs, luxueuze hotels en trouwkapelletjes. Las Vegas is de grootste stad van Nevada en telt ruim een half miljoen inwoners. In Nevada is gokken gelegaliseerd. Door de ontelbare gokpaleizen wordt de stad in de woestijn ook wel ‘Sin City’ genoemd. We bezoeken de strip, chillen lekker bij het enorme zwembad van onze mega grote hotel en gaan nog een avond naar het hysterische freemont street waar de jongens met een zipline overheen zweven. This shot was such a surreal experience. I had ventured out into the dunes 2 days in a row, this day was the third. Up to this point I was focused on distance shots capturing the layers of the dunes. On the second day, I bumped into a new to film photographer, Louise, who mentioned capturing the sand blowing off the dunes. Then, just later that evening, I spent some time taking to another photographer named Dan, who spent a whole afternoon in them and inspired me to go out a third time. After joining up with a fellow traveler I met, (I will post shots of him later) we hiked out to the largest dune and got some awesome photos. He headed back and I decided to stay and try for these shots. The wind was blowing, sending sand into my ears and eyes, and every crevice. It was also, soft and felt comforting as I leaned on the peak of the massive dune. Patiently, I waited for larger gusts of wind to come, as sand gently covered me, almost as if it was calling me to rejoin the dust from whence I had come. It was around 96 degrees, but it just felt like a warm glow. The views all around were stunningly beautiful. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park. You can see they go on forever! Well, a few miles deep anyway. There are peaks and valleys throughout. NPS recommends not doing the hike after 10 am in the summer. The Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is a complex of interstellar clouds with different nebulae, particularly a dark nebula which is centered 1° south of the star Ophiuchi. At an estimated distance of about 140 parsecs, or 460 light years, it is one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System. For weeks the desert has been calling me, and after checking conditions daily and waiting for everything to line up, I finally packed up and heeded the call. Death Valley did not disappoint. It couldn't have been a more perfect time. These pictures are from the first night, sunset at Mesquite Sand Dunes. There was a small storm coming through and just as the sun was dipping past the horizon it began to rain just enough to change the color of the dunes and fill the air with the smell of fresh rainfall. The blooming creosote bushes, urged on by the light shower, emitted their own distinct smell of rain and wood smoke. The experience of the changing light, colors and smells, the soft cushion of sand as I ran down a steep dune... It was profoundly beautiful. Life is not an easy journey. It can be deeply painful, and this past year has been filled with darkness and grieving, in my own world and in our world. But these moments of beauty are available if we let them into us. I'm so grateful for the beauty. I hope these pictures evoke a bit of it for you. Sampling Death Valley I tried my best to showcase the discoveries we made during our three-day visit to Death Valley. A lot is left out, like the incredible night sky so big and clear I just lived in the experience rather than needing to capture it. I took many photos, but mostly to remember the lines and forms of the landscape, the textures and colors, and how I’ve never witnessed a better example of atmospheric perspective. All day, you are encased in a world of towering blue mountains, and on the last day, everything was a shade of pastel blues and pinks as the weather was preparing for a change. I spent a lot of time just looking. There is currently a lake in Badwater Basin, Lake Manly. Zabriskie Point at Death Valley National Park is an outwardly place. There are so many forms to photograph, looked like an unending list. What attracted me of this image is the folds , almost like paper folds. For the same image I took multiple shots at varying light - evening , early morning and even once I went during midday to check it out. This one is taken, with very slow shutter speed, late in the evening after sunset before night settled in. When Alex reached out to plan her proposal to Marilise, we planned for Death Valley. She's been before and knew that was the place she wanted to propose until...she couldn't. Death Valley flooded with hurricane Hilary and we were left scrambling through tons of different ideas and ultimately decided on my specialty, Grand Canyon. It was an amazing proposal but when I went to Death Valley for my birthday in February I felt so inspired. Though I shot a bow renewal there before, I hardly posted anything about it. I decided to specialize in what I know best, Grand Canyon. Still, there was no denying my affection for this place. Long ago, my best friend and I found Death Valley an equidistant location to meet up in the winter and I've never grown tired of it. It's huge and varied with so much amazing surrounding the park too. I reached out to Alex and Marilise. I had a crazy idea. We spent so much time together planning a Death Valley proposal there that I knew this place would be meaningful to them too and asked if maybe they wanted to reherse their vows there, a pre-wedding intimate vow exchange. They were in. It was amazing. We started at sunrise at Lake Manly/Bad water basin and then went to the Artist's Pallet where they wrote and rewrote their vows. The sky was over cast but gave way to sunshine and read the vows at Zabrinski Point, celebrated in the sand dunes and parted ways. It was perfection. I stayed in Death Valley for a day and a half more and had a hard time tearing myself away, as usual.

DAY 3 - MESQUITE FLAT SAND DUNES - DEATH VALLEY We made it to the dune and had one major goal in mind. We wanted to sled down the 100' dunes! @t4r_zygarde had to sit this one out with Falcor, as dogs aren't allowed on the dunes. But he watched us from afar. As we were walking towards the largest dune, we noticed some other people trying to Sled. They weren't able to really get any movement and would fall off 2 seconds after starting. So we decided maybe another dune would be better. We stopped just a bit short of the largest dune on the tallest Ridge and started riding down the side. And success! We weren't going fast, but we were able to go the whole way eventually. A couple of key takeaways from this experience; A saucer will work much better to slide down the dune. Or at least a single person short sled. Walking back up dunes to Sled again is much worse than in snow. I am not a spring chicken, and it took me the rest of the day to recover from this.
