OTD - May 20, 1884 - producer Leon Schlesinger was born. After a theater career, Schlesinger founded Pacific Title & Art Studio in 1919, which created title cards for silent films until the advent of sound at the end of the 1920s. Warner Bros then contracted him as head of their new animation unit, and he hired Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising to make these cartoons. Schlesinger played almost no role in the making of these, leaving Harman and Ising to work on low budgets while he produced a series of live-action westerns. When the duo left in 1933, Schlesinger set up his own studio, Leon Schlesinger Productions, and hired such men as Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett and Tex Avery to produce new cartoons. They were always credited as "supervisors" so that more credit could go to Schlesinger himself, even though there was no question who really made the cartoons. At one point, he relocated Avery's unit to a crummy bungalow dubbed "Termite Terrace", which became the unofficial name of the studio even after the unit moved back. In the late 1930s, when the animators considered making an animated feature, Schlesinger allegedly responded: "I need an animated feature like I need two ฤ$$holes." Despite his notorious lack of humor, Schlesinger occasionally participated in the Looney Tunes, such as giving Bugs Bunny his definitive name and appearing on-screen in "You Ought To Be In Pictures" (1940). He spoke with a lisp, which is widely believed believed have inspired those of the characters Daffy Duck and Sylvester the Cat. In 1944, Schlesinger sold his cartoon studio to Warner Bros and retired. His successor was the even less humorous Edward Selzer. He then served as head of WB's Theater Services until his death in 1949. Although Schlesinger's own involvement in the WB cartoons was minimal, he was significant for his hands-off approach, giving his animators wide creative freedom that resulted in several beloved cartoons. His open attitude toward his men was : "I pay you boys to make funny cartoons. As long as the public likes your work and you stay within budget, you can do whatever you think will bring in the laughs.โ

OTD - May 18, 1940 - the Looney Tunes short "You Ought To Be In Pictures", directed by Friz Freleng, was released. This was Freleng's first Looney Tunes short upon returning to the studio after a stance at MGM's cartoon unit, where he directed the unsuccessful "Captain and the Kids" series (1938-39). The title was derived from the 1834 song hit "You Oughta Be In Pictures" by Dana Suesse and Edward Heyman. "You Ought To Be In Pictures" was notably the first Looney Tunes to blend extensive live-action and animation, with an animated Porky Pig interacting with several studio staff members, including writer Michael Maltese (playing a studio officer), animator Gerry Chiniquy (playing a director), and producer Leon Schlesinger (playing himself). However, none of the live actors' voices are their own - the scenes were shot silent, and voice actor Mel Blanc filled in for all their voice roles.ย "You Ought To Be In Pictures" was positively received, with one critic writing : "A new idea, and one that may have far reaching effect in the making of cartoon shorts, this film employs human actors and hand drawn characters with synchronized voices. For something that was no doubt intended to be largely an experiment, "You Ought To Be In Pictures" is very entertaining, and equal in quality to any of the Schlesinger shorts. [...] It is very well told. Music is good; photography and synchronization excellent. The background is the cartoon plant, and the major live actor is Leon Schlesinger. He is so good that he ought to be in pictures." The cartoon is considered the finest animation/live-action merger of its time, and is also credited with partially inspiring the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988). In 1994, it was voted the 34-Greatest Cartoon of All Time by 1,000 members of the animation field, and in 2016 it was shortlisted for a Retro-Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation : Short Subject. When Freleng was asked the genesis of "You Ought To Be In Pictures", he replied : "It was just a fun thing to do, and that was the reason for doing it."

OTD - May 14, 1932 - the Merrie Melodies short "It's Got Me Again!", directed by Rudolf Ising, was released. This cartoon, which borrows much animation from the earlier short "Hold Anything" (1930), was based around the song of the same name by Bernice Petkere and Irving Caesar, heard on a gramophone in the short. No commercial recordings or written lyrics of the song, before or after this cartoon's release, are known to exist, although it is heard in the documentary film "Vince Giordano : There's A Future In The Past" (2016) albeit without lyrics. "It's Got Me Again" was notably nominated for the first Academy Award for Best Animated (then known as "Best Short Subject : Cartoons"), being the only non-Disney nominee that year, but it lost to "Flowers and Trees", the first commercially released three-strip Technicolor cartoon. OTD - May 5, 1945 - the Merrie Melodies short "Hare Trigger", directed by Friz Freleng, was released. This cartoon marked the first appearance of an antagonistic, diminutive cowboy, created by Freleng and writer Michael Maltese as an alternative to Elmer Fudd, whom Freleng deemed too clumsy to serve as a worthy adversary to Bugs Bunny. Despite widespread beliefs that the character was modeled after Freleng, the director himself never discussed this for decades before eventually admitting to a reporter : โI have the same temperament. Iโm small, and I used to have a red mustache.โ Maltese hesitated between naming the character Texas Tiny, Wyoming Willie, or Denver Dan, but ultimately settled on "Yosemite Sam". Sam would go on to be used exclusively by Freleng and/or his unit as one of Bugs Bunny's recurring rivals until 1964, with notable entries such as "Buccaneer Bunny" (1948), "High Diving Hare" (1949), "Ballot Box Bunny" (1951), "Sahara Hare" (1955) and "Knighty Knight Bugs" (1958), the only Bugs Bunny cartoon to ever win an Oscar. In Freleng's own words : "Yosemite Sam was the power character.
