IN THE BEGINNING... The process of creating page one of C’MON UTAH! An Art Book by Shovels & Rope Illustrated by Julio Cotto Rivera...”I was thirsty.” Spoiler alert, the book has a happy ending as the fabled magical horse, Utah, reunites another family. Santa and the Easter Bunny bring presents, candy and eggs, but ‘Utah’ brings something much more important. He brings joy, hope, love and families back together. But I wanted to build up to that happy ending by starting with a feeling of desperation, as I imagined Shovels & Rope intended when writing the song C’MON UTAH!. First, there’s the hot sun beating down in the center of the page sparking thoughts of unbearable heat and thirst. There’s an ongoing theme throughout the book that I created to give it a feel of woodblock-printed art...a very popular and traditional art form in Latin America, especially in Mexico. But what the viewer may not realize at first glance, is that the blazing circular rays double to also simulate the razor wire atop a border wall or fence. The circling vultures are intended to create a feeling of impending doom. I wanted to give a feeling that time is of the essence and crucial to the rider’s survival...so I arranged the vultures as the face of a Roman numeral clock 3, 6, 9 & 12. I also snuck in the directions of a compass in the four corners of the page, leading to page two, which reads “I was lost”. #fabfounderfriday this week features the incredible Jennings Lee Cameron @jenningsleestudio 🎨 ♥️ 🖼️ Moving to Charleston, I made friends primarily through my identity as a mom, vs. through work or school connections, like I had in New York. Between balancing my own business, finding our home, and raising two little boys, it took a while to truly build my “tribe.” Luckily I met Jennings early on, only to realize 1) she was my neighbor (almost close enough to borrow a cup of sugar) and one of those people you just feel connected to from the jump, and 2) she was an amazing acrylic artist with fantastic range.
