Calling all dance majors and minors interested in chaperoning this summer's BODYTRAFFIC Teen Program! Chaperones will be provided with on campus housing, meals, and the opportunity to partake in all classes and activities during the week for free. Chaperones are responsible for traveling with students to and from the Burns Fine Arts Center, dining halls, and on any off or on-campus trips. They'll also assist the BODYTRAFFIC team in communications with participants staying in the dorms, and are expected to be positive role models and representatives of BODYTRAFFIC and LMU. Last week, LMU Dance welcomed Jeroboam Bozeman, a principal artist with Alvin Ailey, to teach a workshop to several of our Modern/Contemporary classes. In addition to working with Ailey, Bozeman has performed on Broadway and as a guest with The Royal Ballet, worked in several commercial projects, and danced in the live action Little Mermaid. Our students were thrilled to spend the afternoon learning from him, and we're so grateful for his willingness to share his artistry, energy, and passion with us. 🌟 Student Spotlight: Than-Povi Martinez 🌟 Povi (@povimtz) is a passionate and dedicated @lmudance major and proud Tewa person from Po'Woh'Geh Owingeh (Pueblos de San Ildefonso) in New Mexico - and someone who truly illuminates LMU's creative community through their artistry! 🩰✨ Of particular meaning to Povi has been their experiences in performance with their fellow dancers, as well as the community engagement opportunities that is such an integral part of the department curriculum. Povi shared, "During my time at LMU Dance, I experienced a comprehensive curriculum guided by wonderfully knowledgeable and beautiful faculty members. Meet Sophia Pizzuti ’24, a senior double majoring in entrepreneurship and dance from Portland, Oregon! 🦁 From the age of two, Sophia immersed herself in the world of dance and eventually became a competitive dancer. 💃 Her passion for dance inspired her to turn it into a career, but she recognized the need for entrepreneurial skills to thrive in the industry. At LMU, Sophia serves as treasurer of @lmudancesociety. Last summer, she interned with a property management company, where she focused primarily on accounting and HR. Though outside her major, she was able to apply the knowledge and skills she learned from LMU's well-rounded business courses. As Sophia approaches her final semester at LMU, she reflects on the (sometimes) rigorous experience. “It hasn't always been easy, but the hard work and unit overload were undeniably worth it. DANCE PERFORMANCE THIS THURSDAY Moving Meditations in the Laband Art Gallery Kelvin Bank & Prof. Bernard Brown Thu. Dec. 1, 5 – 7pm, drop-in Laband Art Gallery Free to all Conceived as a physical and emotional journey, Kelvin Bank (major + minor ’23) and Bernard Brown (Asst. Prof. of Dance) will inhabit the exhibition “On the Verge” together. Their performances will occur intermittently over two hours. You’re in invited to drop in anytime. @lmudance Kelvin Bank ‘23 is an Environmental Studies major and Dance minor who began dancing when he was 15 as a majorette dancer. As a late starter, he has worked hard to catch up to his peers and express himself in an art form that demands physical excellence and vulnerability. @notquelvin Bernard Brown is Assistant Professor of Dance & Theatre at Loyola Marymount University. They received their MFA in Choreographic Inquiry from UCLA. LMU's Plunge Dance Intensive for dance majors included an Arts, Media and Business Panel in the Business Innovation Zone (BIZ). Plunge instructors Gracie Whyte and Laura Berg of contemporary dance theater duo @whyteberg led the panel that featured Celine Chai '20, a dance and @lmumschool alumna and co-founder of @ninetyeightla, and Jason Jarvis, associate professor of communication studies. Alexander Villanueva, president of @lmu.es, also spoke to the students. This is one of the many cool things that's happening in the BIZ!
