Dear friends this is my conte drawing of the "Old Man". It has a great story behind it so bear along for a moment. I was walking along the promenade in Santa Monica when I saw this guy just leaning against a palm tree. I was stunned by his face. I slowly approached him and asked if I could do a sketch of him. He sort of shrugged and after a couple of minutes his memory imbedded. He got up and left. I tried to offer some money or buy him a meal he just kept on walking. This is one of my favorite drawings for sure, Many people see Moses or Michelangelo or a number of great faces. As I reminisced about my life growing up in the Bronx, (it doesn’t matter which borough you came from its the same) my mom would hang out of the window always waiting for me and yelled to come up stairs. During the summer we had no air conditioning so I would sleep on the fire escape. It was moments that I'll never forget. The painting says so much to me and maybe to you too. Morning turns into night, I was a crime fighter, a time traveler, a cowboy, a kooky kid growing up in the Bronx. I loved the movies it was my home away from home, safe from whatever was real. During the 50s my dad would drop me off at out local movie house when it opened and then head off to work. Pick me up at the end of the day. I'd watch 30 cartoons, a B movie, Movie Tone news, another B film and then the feature one. I was scared to death with the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" - I never slept at night again. Too bad I never knew it was a real industry, had I known maybe I would have become a film director but that's in the past I became an artist. No Regrets. The Bronx Ward movie house is long gone but those memories are with me forever. Hope you enjoy the touch of the past.
