Last weekend I entered @lvbirth_colab raffle and won this amazing book, Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey! @thenapministry Accepting my win was a message from God, it was just the book I needed! In the name of self preservation I have been exercising the practice of “slowing down” and being more present in the now. To support this practice I meditate daily, journal write, and as of lately I rest (as much as I can). The importance of rest definitely hits different these days now that I am a mom! My body will literally begin to shut down if and when I don’t get adequate sleep! I often hear “sleep when the baby sleeps” however this isn’t as realistic for me so I do my best to nap and rest when I can. America was built on the backs of Black and indigenous people who labored without rest for centuries as the country built its economic power. We are seeing the negative effects of sleep deprivation in our health today. Declared a global crisis, lack of rest is literally killing us! Rest is resistance because it is a counter narrative to the script of capitalism and white supremacy for all people. Hersey encourages the notion to take back our power and declare rest as our natural birthright and a way to dream and imagine a present and future where we aren’t consumed by grind culture. Had the chance to encapsulate a super cool twin placenta! This placenta produced a whopping ✨ 230 capsules✨ This is a Mono/Di twin placenta. Monochorionic/diamniotic (mono/di) twins are two identical babies who develop with the same placenta but in separate amniotic sacs. I absolutely adore birth (obviously). I want to start sharing birth stories, and families experiences! If you’re interested in having your shared please email me @ [email protected] It all started at 28 weeks, I was diagnosed with Cholestasis of pregnancy, my bile acid number was 74, I went on a liver glow tincture and tried everything in the book to control the itching. I had blood work done every week to make sure it wasn’t getting worse and my numbers had gone down again until I was 35.5 and they jumped back up to 14. Because we weren’t sure how fast that number was going to climb my midwife wanted to do a membrane sweep. When I went for the membrane sweep I had already taken two doses of Cohosh, so I was dilated to 5 that could stretch to a 6. This was the night of February 3rd. My midwife said that if I didn’t spontaneously go into labor that night to take a castor oil cocktail in the morning and let them know when I drank it. I drank the cocktail at about 9am February 4th and immediately had bowel irritation, contractions started getting consistent at 10am. By 2 I was in rip roaring labor. ✨Babywearing✨ Let’s chat about it! If you swipe left in the photos, you’ll see the TICKS acronym with the definition! I baby-wear often in my doula role and post photos, so today I thought we should talk about safe baby wearing! When purchasing a wrap or soft structured carrier, you want to make sure that your baby will be safe from positional asphyxiation and have proper hip placement. TICKS is a fantastic guideline when wearing your baby on your front! T- tight I- In view C- close enough to kiss K- keep chin off chest S- supported back Whenever I get a new carrier that I may not be familiar with, I test them out with one of my daughter’s dolls until I feel comfortable putting a real baby in it. Often times I see new parents wearing babies very low or tilted to the side; both are dangerous but especially for newborns. If you aren’t sure about using your new wrap, reach out to your local doula/mom community. There are many groups who help with baby wearing and allow you to try carriers on to see if the fit is right! What is Delayed Cord Clamping? Delayed cord Clamping is the natural process of allowing blood flow to continue from the placenta to baby. The previous home to a sweet brother and sister who found their way into their parents arms ON THEIR DUE DATE!! Only about 5 percent of woman spontaneously give birth ON their due date. 75 percent of woman giving birth after 40 weeks and 5 days (albeit these are singleton statistics). Did you know there are multiple ways to calculate a due date and each way actually gives you a different due date ? That’s why a lot of birth professionals prefer the term guess date. This helps promote bonding, regulates body temperature and helps regulate your hormones. Skin to skin is also a great way of promoting the mother slowing down and resting. Hydrate: Hydration is crucial in healing your body after delivery. It is also key to establishing and keeping up your milk supply. Nutrition: Be sure to eat every three hours to keep your levels steady and keep your milk supply up. Your body heals best when it is fueled.
