Complex syntax is when there is one or more dependent clauses in an utterance (e.g., I went to the store because I needed milk; the cat who ran away). Complex syntax skills equip children to fully express themselves in academic and social settings. Without complex syntax, children are relying on simple sentences to express their thoughts which can be limiting to the depth with which they can communicate and the engagement of their communication partner. For a taste of what this may be like, try speaking exclusively in simple sentences to a friend! It is not the case that only older children are speaking with complex syntax. In fact, by 5 years old, children should produce various forms of complex syntax! This accomplishment is particularly important, as children with language impairment often produce fewer types, have fewer instances of complex syntax, and have complex syntax-specific errors compared to their typically developing peers. Over the next few weeks, we will be going over complex syntax types and the errors you might observe in a child with language impairment. For a tutorial on complex syntax, see Barako Arndt and Schuele (2013). LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION & why it’s important: đŸŒ± There’s so much information out there about what your child is expected to communicate expressively (whether it’s babbling, jargoning, sound effects, gestures, signs, or words), but let’s not forget just how important receptive language (or language comprehension) is! đŸŒ± Children typically respond to sounds & voices and understand the meaning of words BEFORE they begin producing them. A child will typically understand “ball” by looking at or pointing to a ball when asked, before they will label “ball” when they see one. đŸŒ± So what can you do at home to support their comprehension? Swipe through and try these simple tips and activities with your child to increase their understanding of what’s around them! Expose them to sounds and voices, facial expressions, social routines, and names in play and in your daily routines đŸŒŒ 💌 Be sure to SAVE this post so you can reference it easily, and COMMENT “CHART” for a full chart of language comprehension skills expected by 36 months!

Some children say “I don’t know” a lot when they are asked a question. Often the children need encouragement to provide an answer - and it isn’t the case that they really don’t know. We’ve created this handout to help SLPs, teachers, and parents respond to “I don’t know” responses from children. Feel free to share it widely! You can find the handout PDF in the link in our bio! #weeklydoseofwednesdaywisdom #languagedevelopment #languageimpairment #dld #developmentallanguagedisorder #languagedevelopmenttips

When can we expect a child to not have noticeable grammatical errors in their spoken language?   Evidence: Children in kindergarten should not have many grammatical errors in their spoken language, with one exception.   What’s the exception? Irregular past tense verbs. Even verbally precocious children make mistakes on irregular past tense verbs, even into second grade.   But beyond those irregular past tense verbs, children’s language in kindergarten and beyond might have an occasional grammatical error, but not frequent grammatical errors. If you notice more than infrequent grammatical errors in the spontaneous language of a child five years of age or older, you might be listening to a child with a language impairment. Some children with language impairments have their greatest weaknesses in grammar. Some children with language impairment have their only deficits in grammar. Is grammar all that important? YES! But we will save the WHY for another Wednesday. #weeklydoseofwednesdaywisdom #languageimpairment #dld #developmentallanguagedisorder #specificlanguageimpairment #grammar #morphosyntax #languagedevelopment

WORLD EPILEPSY DAY💜 Some common effects of epilepsy on speech include, 1) Aphasia: Certain types of seizures or seizure activity in specific areas of the brain can lead to temporary or permanent language difficulties, such as difficulty speaking, understanding speech or finding the right words. 2) Dysarthria: Seizures affecting the muscles responsible for speech production can result in slurred or unclear speech, making it difficult for others to understand. 3) Language Impairments: Epilepsy can sometimes be associated with cognitive impairments, including difficulties with language processing, which may impact speech fluency and comprehension. 4) Transient Speech Disturbances: Some individuals may experience temporary speech disturbances during or immediately following a seizure, such as mumbling, nonsensical speech, or speech arrest. 5) Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures (PNES): In some cases, individuals with epilepsy may also experience psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, which can mimic epileptic seizures and may involve speech disturbances as part of their presentation. #epilepsyawareness #neurologicalcondition #epilepticbrain #speechdisturbances #aphasia #dysarthria #apraxia #anomia #dyspraxia #speechlanguagepathologist #neuroslp #motormovements #unclearspeech #languageimpairment #agnosia #anxiety #coimbatoreofficial #coimbatorelife #coimbatoreinfluencers #coimbatoretherapist #speechtherapyindia #tamilnaduindia

Aphasia and apraxia, distinct speech disorders often stemming from brain injuries that typically affect the left side of the brain, differ in nature. Aphasia impairs linguistic capabilities, affecting language comprehension and expression, while apraxia involves the inability to perform purposeful actions despite normal muscle strength, particularly impacting the motor aspects of speech production. These conditions, along with oral apraxia, can result from a stroke. Differentiating between them can be challenging, as they may coexist, making it difficult to distinguish their individual manifestations.

Today is Weekly Dose of Wednesday Wisdom! Subordinate conjunction clauses (e.g., I went to the store BECAUSE I ran out of eggs) are one type of complex syntax. Children learn to use subordinate conjunctions to join or relate ideas. BECAUSE expresses a cause-effect relation. Young children use the subordinate conjunctions when, because, and if most often in the preschool years. These subordinate conjunctions are also the most common ones that adults use in talking to children. Children are more likely to learn advanced subordinate conjunctions - such as before, although, unless, and since – from being read to than from listening to adults talk to them. Learning to use and understand a variety of subordinate conjunctions can lead to children more effectively and efficiently expressing their thoughts and ideas in academic and social settings. #complexsyntax #subordinateconjunctions #subordinateconjunctionclauses #complexsentences #literacy #language #languageimpairment #specificlanguageimpairment #dld #weeklydoseofwednesdaywisdom

Happy Weekly Dose of Wednesday Wisdom! Today we’ll talk about using print in therapy. It is likely that many children with speech and language impairments have or will have a reading disability. Books should thus be used to work on any speech or language goal. For example, during speech therapy, you could identify speech targets within a book and read the book to the child emphasizing the targets. Even if the child is not yet reading, it is a great opportunity to work on the front end and foster reading development while also targeting therapy goals. You can build print awareness through reading and writing sentences related to goals and incorporate phonological awareness activities. #speechlanguagepathology #speechlanguagetherapy #slp #literacy #printawareness #phonologicalawareness #speechsounddisorder #ssd #languageimpairment #weeklydoseofwednesdaywisdom

There are many benefits of children being bilingual. Speaking two languages allows kiddos to communicate with a wider network of peers! Bilingual brains also seem to be better at resolving conflicts, switching attention and processing information. The language used at home can drive a child's learning of both languages. Increased use of both the native and target languages can lead to higher proficiency. Most schools provide instruction in English 90-100% of the time with support from ESL programs. Children are exposed to English through their peers, media, and other resources. Sometimes when a kiddo is learning two languages, they switch between languages when speaking and it is not unusual for a kiddo to be silent sometimes in school when they first learn English. Continued use of their first language will lessen the chance that they will lose that language. Communicate with your child’s school if you desire for them to continue using both languages. Bilingual kiddos with a speech or language impairment can get additional support from one of our Speech Language Pathologists. âžĄïž SWIPE for more! âžĄïž I know what you’re probably thinking- what do actions have to do with communication?? đŸ’« Well, children typically learn to imitate actions BEFORE they start to imitate words. The skill of imitation is such an important foundation to communication, because children learn to communicate by imitating what we say. So, teaching them to imitate actions will strengthen their imitation skills so that they can eventually imitate words! đŸ’« Research also shows that children learn by DOING. Rather than teaching them just by showing or modeling, it’s important to have them do things on their own too! Discovering what they can do with objects leads to learning, pretending, imagining, and communicating. đŸ’« Make sure you pair a word with the action so your child can learn the meaning of the word and eventually imitate the word along with the action! And get this- the actions above âŹ†ïž are only half of the actions that you can expect your child to do with objects by 16 months. Wondering what other actions you can model for your child? Comment “ACTIONS” below and I’ll DM you the full chart! And be sure to SAVE this post so you have it to reference!

💙 #autism #adhd #languageimpairment #awaerness
