Kolossi Castle is the birthplace of the oldest manufactured wine in the world still-in-production, Commandaria, a blend of the Xynisteri and Mavro grapes. Dating back to 800 BC, this sweet dessert wine from Cyprus also holds the record for the oldest Appelation d'origine in the world. The Knights Hospitallers originally built the Kolossi Castle as their headquarters and called the area the ‘Grande Commanderie’. Westlich von Limassol liegt die Burg von Kolossi, eine ehemalige Festung des Johanniter-Ordens. Die Burg wurde 1454 gebaut, aber der Ritterorden besaß hier wohl schon seit 1210 einen befestigten Sitz, um seine zahlreichen Besitztümer auf Zypern zu verwalten. Im 1. Obergeschoss ist ein Wandmalerei aus dem 16. Jh. erhalten, die die Kreuzigung Christi zeigt (Foto 4). Wichtigste Einnahmequelle für den Orden war die Zuckerproduktion. Überreste der alten Zuckermühle befinden sich unmittelbar neben der Burg (Foto 5). Nicht weit entfernt steht eine kleine byzantinische Kirche aus dem 12. Jahrhundert (Foto 6). Serving as a fine example of military architecture, Kolossi castle was originally built in the 13th century, and rebuilt in its present form in the 15th century. After the fall of Acre in 1291, it served as the Grand Commandery of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and in the 14th century came under the domain of the Knights Templar. IN 1191, RICHARD THE LIONHEART celebrated his conquest of Cyprus by wedding a Spanish princess at Limassol Castle, ordering barrels of wines from the nearby village of Kolossi for the nuptials. The crusading King of England toasted the lavish ceremony with a swig of the sweet nectar and, legend has it, declared the drink “the wine of kings and king of wines.” During their stay in Cyprus, the Knights produced and exported a sweet wine, which became known as the ‘vin de Commanderie’. Today, Commandaria wine is one of the island’s traditional wines and one of the oldest named wines in the world, having had the same name for eight centuries. The castle today consists of a single three-storey with an attached rectangular enclosure or bailey about 30 by 40 metres. Next to the castle are the ruins of a fourteenth-century sugar mill. Kolossi Castle appears in literature from around the world and particularly in many works of fiction, including La milicia de Dios by the Spanish writer Eduardo García-Ontiveros Cerdeño.
