Knysna Loerie (Tauraco corythaix) #turacothursday? Sure Although they're known as part of the Turaco family, us South Africans know them as "Loeries" The flash of red as they fly off is always so beautiful to see. Their colours, unlike other bird species come entirely from pigmentation, rather than reflected/refracted light. I first saw one in a birding guide my grandparents had on their coffee table. I was a very young child, but every time we visited, I would flick through the pages of that book until I found the loeries. They don't like being out in the open so they can be difficult to spot. Every time I see one I don't seem to have my camera handy 😅 Luckily, this time I did, although the ISO was high and backlight strong. R3500 I chose the Natal Plum (Carissa Macrocarpa) or 'num num berry' because it is one of the Knysna Turaco's favourite snacks🤤 While doing research for this painting, I also came across this really interesting fact: Did you know that Turacos are the only birds to possess true red and green colors? When you look at most birds, the color you are seeing is a reflection produced by the feather structure. The turaco's red pigment (turacin) and green pigment (turacoverdin) both contain copper. In fact, if you stirred a glass of water with a red turaco feather, the water would turn pink!
