After seeing the deer, we wondered around Knole Estate, which was originally built as an archbishop’s palace! Kole passed through royalty to the Sackville family - who still live there today! The estate is 609 years old, and has many showrooms. In a world before photography, most people couldn't afford to have even one picture of themselves or their loved ones. Getting your portrait painted, or even drawn, was a luxury most couldn't afford. Our grand houses are packed with portraits of ladies and lords, admirals and generals, bishops and men of business. Those who served them are almost entirely faceless. This is an exception. He's Solomon Brigden, a carter. We know what he looks like because his boss, the 3rd Duke of Dorset, commissioned paintings of his household staff in 1783. Solomon worked at Knole, in Kent. Research by the National Trust suggests he was born in 1760 and died in 1825. He married and had seven children. When we last visited Knole, copies of surviving portraits were on display in the cafe. Solomon wouldn't have expected to have his portrait painted. Now he's seen by thousands of people every year. #RegencyHistory #knole #portrait #workingman
