Today in music history... the debut album by Mel and Kim was released in the UK in 1987. This was pure high energy pop produced by the infamous team of Stock, Aitken, and Waterman. It gave us three spectacular UK chart singles, "Showing Out (Get Fresh At The Weekend)" which went to top three, "F.L.M" which went top ten, and the number on single "Respectable". Two other songs from the album were also given to other Stock, Aitken, and Waterman artists... "More Than Words Can Say" was also recorded by Hazell Dean and Carol Hitchcock and "Who's Gonna Catch You" was also recorded by Sinitta and Pepsi and Shirlie. (This was a common practice with that label at the time and it's interesting to hear different interpretations.) Mel and Kim released a new single in 1988 called "That's The Way It Is" in preparation for a second album. However, sadly Mel (aka Melanie Appleby) died of cancer in January of 1990 at the age of 23. The duo were nominated for a Brit Award in 1988 for "Best Breakthrough Act". After Mel's death, her sister Kim Appleby embarked on a brief but successful solo career and had two top ten singles, "Don't Worry" in 1990 and "G.L.A.D." in 1991. Mel and Kim were one of my favorite pop groups in the late 1980's. Their joyous, uplifting songs got me through some very rough emotional times back then. I can't imagine what it must have been like for Kim Appleby to continue her music career after her sister Mel had passed away. That must have been so difficult, undoubtedly. But she did, and in 1990 Kim released this single, one of the finest pop moments of that year.
