Words can’t even describe this experience. We hiked down Kaibab, stayed two nights in Phantom Ranch, hiked some trails at the bottom of the Canyon, and hiked back up. Food was incredible, memories were made, and the sights were breathtaking. Not only was the weather working in our favor, but we got to see a lot more wildlife just off the main drag than we ever have. On the drive in, we saw quite a few deer, and a mystery dog. At first glance we thought it could be a coyote, but the coloring and massive size wasn't like any coyote we'd ever seen before. When we got to the Visitor's Center, we asked a Park Ranger if it could have been a wolf, and it turns out a handful of other tourists had asked the same question! She told us it was possible for it to have been a wolf, especially if so many of us saw it and agreed it wasn't a coyote, which would make it the first wolf in the Grand Canyon in quite some time. While hiking the rim we saw a few birds of prey circling, but they weren't close enough to identify. On the drive out though, I saw this massive thing with a fluffy white tail scurry by, and was trying to figure out what it was. We then got to the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center, and I saw the exact animal I saw. Turns out it was a Kaibab Squirrel, an animal endemic to the Kaibab Plateau area! After getting up early on a chilly Arizona morning to a slowly rising sun and a dusting of snow on the upper peaks of the mountains around Flagstaff, we headed to the trailhead hoping to at least beat SOME of the tourists. It was the off-season and so many of the more challenging routes were closed. We were left with the popular ones, which are go-to hikes for a reason. The walk was STUNNING. Chilly...but stunning. As a burro train passed us down the trail (and then back up again), we trundled toward O'Neill Butte. We had our lunch overlooking the grandeur of canyon in a quiet corner few others would find (that's the Five Miles Further part), and then set back to climb up out of the canyon. Halfway back, as most were just getting started down, @puregigi decided to take her boots off and walk barefoot. As a good husband in solidarity, I did the same. The looks, whispers, and gasps from people we passed were something to experience! As was walking barefoot out of the Grand Canyon.
