Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) .. A member of the Phaseoleae (Pea and bean tribe) this woody, evergreen vine originates from the islands of Luzon, Mindoro and Catanduanes in the Philippines. .. The vine can grow 60 feet long and produces large pseudoracemes (trusses) of flowers. The striking color is made by two pigments, malvin and flavone, being produced at the same time giving the green-blue coloring. .. The vine is pollinated by a species of bat. The bat hangs upside down to drink the nectar from the flowers. As it does this the flower transfers pollen onto the bats head. This pollen is then transferred to the next jade vine flower that the bat visits. .. The Jade Vine is under threat from extensive deforestation of its native habitat. BEHOLD The Jade Vine! Latin name Strongylodon macrobotrys.. a super unique member of the pea & bean (legume) family that I was finally able to drool over in real life @kewgardens last month 🤤 The greenish-blue of the flowers is a colour rarely seen in the plant world. It is due to the co-occurrence of two different pigments in the epidermal cells of the petals: in a super specific 1:9 molar ratio, a flavone (saponarin) & anthocyanin (malvin) are present. The saponarin turns yellow & the malvin blue, this is due to the petals cellular environment being slightly alkaline, resulting in this unique aquamarine colour. 🩵 💛 In it's native rainforests of the Philippines, where the vine & it's pollinators are under threat due to deforestation, it can grow up to 100 metres in length & has been noted to take at least 3-7 years for a seed grown jade vine to produce its very first vibrant blossom. The latter years are generally that of botanical gardens in different climates around the world, attempting to mimic the plants native conditions. The long, pendulous flower clusters (racemes) have perfectly evolved to be pollinated by bats, some believe they have co-evolved. 🦇 As the bats hang upside down to drink nectar from the blooms, they are perfectly positioned for the flower to deposit pollen onto the back of their head, which in turn, pollinates the next jade vine flower that the bats visit, and so on. Such tasks have to be mimicked in most cultivated settings, generally by using a small paintbrush to collect and transfer the pollen of each flower to the next..quite a task to undertake on a plant with as many flowers as this one 😅 It was truly magical to finally get up close to this ethereal species, weaving through the canopy of neighbouring foliage like luminous lanterns of joy 😍

Vandaag een dagje “vrij” dus gingen we lotussen bezorgen door het land. We begonnen bij Burgers Zoo waar de lotus weer te zien zal zijn in het rijstveld bij de ingang van de Bush. Daarna hebben we nog een kleine rondleiding gehad door de Bush en later ook door de Mangrove met de rupsen en vlinderkweek. In de middag zijn we doorgereden naar de Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. Hier zijn de wortelstokken direct geplant bij de nieuwe mediterrane borders in de gracht. Super gave plek voor lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) en we hopen dat ze er goed gaan groeien. Meteen daarna natuurlijk de fantastische Jade Vine gaan bewonderen die nu bloeit in Leiden. 花巡りの旅 〜翡翠葛編〜 長かった冬があけて、今年も花巡りの時期…から少し遅れてしまいました。 転職やら引っ越しやらでばたばたしていて、桜とカタクリは逃してしまいました…。 さて、そんなこんなで今年の花巡りもスタートです。 去年から絶対行く！と決めていたヒスイカズラ。落ちた花弁まで鮮やかなターコイズブルーでとても綺麗です。 フィリピンのとある島で自生している珍しい花で、絶滅危惧種だとか。育てていただいてる植物園の方々には頭が下がります。 国内で見れる場所も限られていて、東北にはなかったはずです。関東にはわりと見れる所あるのかな？ 新潟県立植物園、そういう意味でもとてもおすすめですよ。あそこ大好きです。 とある後輩が花の写真撮るのメキメキ上達してて、先輩としてこれはうかうかしてられないな…なんて嬉しく焦り気味。 さてさて、今年も気合い入れて巡ります。 #花巡り #翡翠葛 #ヒスイカズラ #ファインダー越しの私の世界 #新潟県立植物園 #秋葉区 #jadevine
