Morning froggers, just a quick update on our substrate range, the first of which has just gone onto the website, the Rainforest substrate is a special.blend we have put together to be used in dart frog vivarium as well as as a planting media, by combining it with more coarse bark chips or clay drainage media it can be used for aroids and bromeliads as a potting kix as well!! At the moment we are only offering it in 4litre bags but if we get positive feed back from you guys we will add a 10litre bag to the range. Flying visit to Manchester today, dropped off some dried leaves to the museum for their exhibits then on to MMU to pick up some Mantella madagascariensis. NEW FROGS! Just pick them up from Harbor air, and got them home. These are Santa Isabella's also called phantasmal dart frogs, they will live in my 120 gallon 4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft tank that currently hoses my emerald tree boa. This is a small experiment I'm trying, I figured that since these are exceptionally small and he's a full-grown snake that they are far too small for him to consider prey. And since their diurnal and more ground-based and he's nocturnal and completely arboreal I imagine they will not even know that the other one is there most of the time. The true benefit here for the frogs is that they get to live in a substantially larger enclosure than most dart frogs get. I chose this species for three reasons; first because they have a beautiful call. I only generally hear my bumblebees calling, and I wish I heard more frog calls. Second because they're on the cheaper end, so if the experiment does go bad and I lose a frog it's not like I spent 400 bucks per frog. Oophaga granulifera "Baru", we've had our ups and downs with this species, and in all honesty mostly downs for a while but this week we finally have a spot of good news, in fact two tiny bright red spots of good news in the form of nice healthy metamorphs. In 1989 my (BB) parents got me a video tape for my birthday, it was a National geographic documentary about the Costa Rican Rainforest and that was the first time I ever saw this species, it has always been one of my favourites.
