If We Don’t b/w I’ll Always Love You by 94 East featuring Prince | Charly Records — CHARLY 633S | 94 East has become a Minneapolis Sound buzzword owing to the fact that Brooklyn transplant & bandleader Pepe Willie hired a 16-year-old Prince Rogers Nelson to add lead guitar to a bundle of his originals at Minneapolis’s Cookhouse Studios in the winter of 1975. Both tracks are taken from what is known colloquially as The Cookhouse 5, which were originally released in various forms over the years to capitalise on the inclusion of Prince as a musician. This new single is from the new LP “Dance To The Music Of The World” via charly_records, where listeners are treated to a glimpse of Prince’s early musical journey. “If We Don’t” & “I’ll Always Love Your” showcasing a remarkable multi-instrumental talent that was obvious even then. His influence on the tracks is unmistakable. Boca 45 Tools Vol 2: Kick That b/w Unwind Your 909 by Boca 45 | Cold Beer Music — COLDBEER 002 | Legendary Bristol-based funk & breaks master @boca_45 is back with round 2 of his battle-ready DJ tools. This breakbeatastic donut takes the form of a second volume of Tools on the Cold Beer Music label & it offers a brilliant brace of cut n’ paste, surefire party starters & floor fillers. Side A’s “Kick That” has old school feels with expertly crafted sample blends that will surely pull the crownd & get the floor going mad. Boca 45 tips his big beat hat to Fatboy Slim by dipping into 2 of his hits. First, from “Gangster Trippin’” (1998) which lifts the recognizable “Kick that gangsta shit” sample comes from the first recorded live performance by Pete Rock & CL Smooth (also sampled by DJ Shadow on 1993’s “Entropy”). Second we get the classic piano chords from “Praise You”, which is lifted from “Take Yo’ Praise” by Camille Yarbrough. & to the delight of many, we get a lil snippet of Q-Tip’s “kick it”. But there’s more, which I will leave you to dig into. On the flip, “Unwind Your 909’ taps into another iconic sample, this time from a sax, with break-neck breaks & plenty of chopped-up energy. Here Boca 45 pulls from one of the classic hip-hop sample break sources: “Unwind Yourself” by Marva Whitney. A bold move given how well worn the break has been over the years, most notably The 45 King’s “The 900 Number” (1988) but here Boca shows why he is a pro by turning up the tempo to near drum-n-bass levels, & makes it his own. (Everybody) Get Dancin’ b/w Don’t Stop The Music by Bombers | West End Records – WES 1215 | From the early 1960s through the early 1980s, to be exact – the spaces that best exemplified Montreal music were discothèques, many of them spectacular & most of them above ground. Long considered a weak market for rock music, Montreal was judged the second biggest disco capital in North America, right behind New York, in the late ’70s. & the Québécois disco studio group Bombers, led by pop-rock producer George Lagios & disco producer Pat Deserio, of Kebekelektrik & Rational Youth, tried to strike disco gold after forming in 1978. With much of the hinterlands fawning over John Travolta’s on-screen dance moves the previous year in Saturday Night Fever, the first album sold well enough for it to be issued as far away as France, Italy, Germany & Sweden. What’s more, with a cast of contributors including the likes of Nanette Workman, Gino Soccio & future Talking Heads bassist Buster (Cherry) Jones, Bombers makes for a tantalizing listen even after all these years. Their biggest hits are their cover of Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican” & “(Everybody) Get Dancin”, which is featured here on Side A. It’s a decent disco joint with all the bells & whistles of what you’d expect as a one-off studio project to cash in on the crave. It’s the lead off track from their 2nd & last LP “Bombers 2”. Stop & Go b/w Save Their Souls by Bohannon Band | Dakar Records – DK 4518 | A killer bit of early funk from the great Hamilton Bohannon. The 1973 single is from quite possibly his greatest album ever, “Stop & Go” (All cuts are instrumentals, save for a few chorus vocals). Both tracks showcase a really unique approach to funky rhythms, with a sound that’s unlike anything else I can think of from the time. The tracks have a slower funk groove than Bohannon’s later disco groove a few years later. The wonderful rhythms mix together scattershot drums with funky wah wah guitar, organ, & hard-plugging basslines – all in a blend that’s pretty mindblowing not just for its instrumental dexterity, but also for the way it brings complex patterns together in a really hypnotic way. The Bohannon Band were comprised of a stellar lineup: Eddie Watkins (bass) Rod Lumpkins (electric piano), Danny “Dangerous Dan” Turner (flute, sax), Melvin “Wah Wah” Watson (guitar), Ray Parker Jr. (guitar & yes that Ghostbuster guy), Mose Davis (organ), Leroy Emanuel (percussion), Travis Biggs (electric violin) & The Haywood Singers. The LP’s title track is on Side A (on the LP it’s listed as “The Stop & Go”) & it is a soul, funk burner. It has been, as far as I can tell, only sampled once: “73 - Guitar Breaks + FX” by Zero-G (1991). The real meat on the bone is on Side B with “Save Their Souls”, a funk-filled tune that has carried its greatness through the ages & always strikes all the right notes. The track that has resonated with & inspired many over their years, first in “Smooth” by Lazy Laz (1989) & most notably in “Cashmere Thoughts” by Jay-Z (1996). Others have sampled it as well: “Dejavu” by J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E. (1990), “Introduction to the Funk” by Ultramagnetic MC’s (1992), “Hootie Mack” by Bell Biv DeVoe (1993), “The Mad Scientist” by Large Professor (1996), “Preachin To The Quiet” by Public Enemy (2005). A Spread Called Quest b/w Kool Summer by Snips | Revamp – RVP-001 | NYC-based Brit @snipsmusic aka Todd Worsnips has previous form when it comes to offering up must-check re-edits & reworks, though more often than not his selected source material is rooted in R&B & hip-hop but also dabbles in disco & boogie on occasion. In this latest, debut release on the new Revamp edit label, Snips successfully takes his scalpel to a double-dose of hip-hop house party starters on one sugary donut just in time for summer jams. Side A’s “A Spread Called Quest” is a rework or homage to 1991’s “Spread Love (Remix)” by The 45 King which is flip of “Spread Love” by Take 6 (from their 1988 self-titled LP). Here Snips takes it a step further by masterfully blending it into a more of a jazzy-boom-bap joint with A Tribe Called Quest’s Dilla-produced “Find A Way” (from the 1998 LP “The Love Moment”) & that song’s sample of “Technova” by Towa Tei & Bebel Gilberto, which Snips also deftly pulls forward. Interestingly, Towa Tei worked with Q-Tip when he was in Dee-Lite on “Groove Is In The Heart”. On the flipside, we have “Kool Summer” which is housey, nudisco take on “Summertime” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, which sampled “Summer Madness” by Kool & The Gang (1974). Here Snips thankfully just pulls LaVette’s, aka Lavette Goodman, vocals from the 1991 pop-rap party jam & builds a proper Chicago house jam to keep the good vibes going. Before I Let Go (Homage To Gail “Sky” King) (Mr K 7” Edit) by Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly b/w Hollywood Message (Mr K 7” Edit) by DJ Hollywood | Most Excellent Unlimited — MXMRK 2066 | Mr. K, aka @dannykrivit, has an amazing knack for knowing what will fill a dancefloor, & it’s hard to imagine this pair of tunes causing anything less than a roadblock. On the A-side, he pays tribute to beloved NYC DJ & editor Gail “Sky” King by recreating her extended edit of the Frankie Beverly & Maze sureshot “Before I Let Go”. The edit arrived a decade after the original surfaced on the best-selling 1981 “Live In New Orleans” LP, although the track was not actually a concert recording but a new studio track made to fill out the final “D-side” of the release. Alas, the gorgeously danceable funk/soul hybrid was pressed at low quality, the harsh sonic nature meaning it never got the support it truly deserved. On the flip, we have “Hollywood’s Message” from legendary hip-hop pioneer DJ Hollywood (aka Anthony Holloway @original_dj_hollywood), a self-released single from the man who was one of the first to grab the microphone at a jam & rhyme over records. As a backing track for his rhymes, Hollywood took a shortcut & used the renowned “Love Is The Message” edit created by Mr. K that repeatedly runs the groovy clavinet break from MFSB’s tune. Disco Edits: O b/w OO by Moar | 45 Loves — 45L-O, orange vinyl | @djmoar is an alias from French DJ & producer Jerome Potin, who has been gifting us groove-laden edit gear & his own original productions for decades now. Moar’s commitment to funk & disco can never be in doubt, & so it goes on this disco donut drop for his 45 Loves label where he takes us back to early 80s disco/funk vibes from the man’s deep archives. First up, “O” is an edit of “This Party Is Just For You” by the Chicago funk outfit Special Touch, which was originally released as a 12” in 1981 on Brackett Records. It’s pure bass-thumpin’ Chi-town funk, disco, early hip-hop party fun with heavy horns & handclaps to get you in the groove & hips bumpin’. On the flip, “OO” offers up a killer edit of “Get Down Saturday Night” by Detroit’s Oliver Cheatham. The original is from the 1983 LP “Saturday Night” & produced by A.D.K. (Al Hudson, Dave Roberson & Kevin McCord) who were a production trio of One Way (who are featured on the track). It was Cheatham’s biggest hit & has been sampled by many since. Catch The Beat (Dimitri From Paris & Mousse T’s Oldskool Edit) b/w Catch The Beat (Special Remix Instrumental) by T-Ski Valley | Peppermint Jam — PJ 290 | Slick, plinky-plonky hip disco editry/reissue-tastics from @peppermintjam_records, who celebrate their 30th anniversary in style with the first in a series of edits & remixes on vinyl. First up is a 7” version of @tskivalley’s “Catch The Beat”, featuring an edit of @dimitrifromparisofficial & @mousstigram’s classic “Oldskool Edit”, flipped with the “Special Remix Instrumental” on the B. IYDK, T-Ski Valley is an early New York rapper who hails from the Valley in the northeast Bronx. He & his high-school pal Disco Prince formed a group called the Erotic Disco Brothers. In 1978 Tski joined Kool Herc as an M.C. (Fly Force). Later that year T-Ski joined up with A.J. & Busy Bee as a D.J. After high school, he went to work with reggae producers Brad Osborne of Clocktower Records & Clement “Coxsone” Dodd (Studio One Records) in launching Grand Groove Records. After his first release was “Catch The Beat,” T-Ski went on to produce groups including Just Four & Chapter III. His real name is Tyrone & he explains: “ T is for Tyrone. S for Sensation, K is for Koolest in the Nation, I is for Inspiration. Valley is where I came from”. “Catch The Beat” contains samples of “Heartbeat” by Taana Gardner (1981) & “Get Fly” by T.J. Swann & Company (1981). The song itself has been sampled by many over the years, most notably DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Grandmaster Flash, Young MC, J.V.C. F.O.R.C.E., De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Massive Attack, J-Lo, Doug E. Fresh, & MF DOOM to name a few. Limited, act fast! My only hunch is that the bass is well heavy and doesn't fare brilliantly in the narrow 7" groove of this pressing, so they were binned, but that's only a hypothesis. El Funk b/w Big Willie by Nick Bike | Not On Label, Chosen Spokes — No Cat # | Canadian edit & remix machine @djnickbike, aka Nick Melnyk, drops a picante latin rosquilla 45 flip that will turn heads & hips moving. 
On Side A’s “El Funk” Bike flips “Da Funk” by Daft Punk (from the 1995 LP “Homework”). In “Da Funk” a snippet from “Datafile Three: Hit 1” by Zero-G (from the 1992 LP “Datafile Three”) was sampled throughout the track, & it’s just a sound effect that lasts less than a second but, & I may be nuts, sounds a lot like what Bike uses here for the core melody for this latin rework that echos the other Daft Punk sample of “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby” by Barry White (from the 1973 LP “I’ve Got So Much to Give”). Bike masterfully slows the roll & eases into a low-riding, cumbia workout that is sure to get heads nodding. Side B’s “Big Willie” is an edit of the salsa heater “La Murga” by Willie Colón (from the 1971 LP “Willie”). It features the vocals of Hector Lavoe, who co-wrote the song. Bike hits us with the heavy horns & allows the salsa-shuffle to intoxicate & pull us onto the floor for another spin. The song also lifts a riff from “Vehicle” by The Ides of March (from the 1970 LP of the same name). Heads will recall “La Murga” as the sample in “Come See Me” by Pitbull (2006), “Come On To Me” by Major Lazer (2014), & “O.G.W.A. My 1st Bicycle b/w Don’t Stop by Nick Bike | Not On Label, Chosen Spokes — No Cat # | Y’all wanna know why he don’t stop? Y’all wanna know why he don’t flop? It’s in the edits 😉 1 of the hardest working DJs in the edit game, hailing from Chiliwack, BC is back at it with a lathe cut release from his @chosenspokes outfit. This time out we get a pair of understated hip-hop flips to slip into your latenight set. First up, Side A’s “My 1st Bicyle” is an edit of “My 1st Song” by Jay-Z (from the 2003 LP “The Black Album”). The Jay-Z track was produced by Aqua (aka Nicholas McCarrell) & Joe “3H” Weinberger whose sample of a late 60s Chilean rock group closed the album out perfectly. Here Bike focuses on the track’s core sample, the guitar riff, which is taken from “Tu Y Tu Mirar, Yo Y Mi Canción” by Los Ángeles Negros (from the 1969 LP “Porque Te Quiero”). I first discovered the song when Nicolas Jaar released an edit of it over a decade ago for his “The Essential Mix (BBC Edit)”(which still hits, highly recommended). In my set last night I mixed each of the 3 tracks & heads were nodding. I dig Bike’s subtle use of Jay-Z’s call out & allowing the guitar riff to flourish. Admittedly, I do wish Bike had let Germaín De La Fuente’s gorgeous vocals in a tad. On the flipside, “Don’t Stop” is a more uptemp, bouncy affiar with a strings & jazzy flute to lift the late night airs. It’s a rework of “(I’m) Just Being Myself” by Dionne Warwick, from her 1973 LP of the same name also known by heads for the track “You’re Gonna Need Me”which Dilla sample for his “Don’t Stop”. The track has been sampled only by a few, including “Don’t Stop” by Chali 2na & “Lunera” by Trio Elétrico. Australia’s most prolific hip-hop remix producer, DJ & turntablist extradordinaire DJ Bacon, aka Scott Braker, is back with 2 high-powered disco-rap edits on one funky-ass, beastie donut that are BPM-boosted for maximum party vibes. It takes skills to take well-worn & edited-by-many Beastie Boys joints & offers up something fresh while digging into the track’s source material to delight heads & dancefloors alike. Edits Vol. 2: I Can’t Understand It b/w Loleatta Disco Flip by Andrés | Hot Pot Records — HPR005 | Expert record collector, skilled DJ, frequent Moodyman collaborator & beatmaker Andrés @dezandresmahogani aka DJ Dez is back not long after the release of his last album “Andres V” with a new sure-shot banging disco-house flavored donut on MotorCity Wine owner @dtothatothep’s (David A-P) @hotpot_records. On Side A, Andrés opens up with “I Can’t Understand It” which has the exact sort of funky guitar riffs, dusty drums & subtle hip-hop stylings to the groove that you would expect of this storied groove specialist. It’s, of course, a rework of The New Birth tune “I Can Understand It”, which is a cover of the Bobby Womack song from 1972. It’s the lead off track from their 1973 LP “Birth Day”, & is a James Brown-esque style recording of the song with lead singer Leslie Wilson, who sounded like Womack, was vocally influenced by Sam Cooke. Here Andrés’ masterful edit will get the floor popping off in no time On Side B, he shows off his skills on the MPC by chopping up “Loleatta Disco Flip” with plenty of hefty drum work & a sprinkling of percussion that keeps whitings moving. It’s a rework of “Dreamin’” by Chicago’s Loleatta Holloway, taken from her 1976 LP “Loleatta”. Here Andrés elevates the disco burner into Chicago house teritory, uplifiting any set your drop this gem into. The album, credited to “Studio Rio”, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers’ classic “Lovely Day” (from the 1977 LP “Menagerie”) that’s arguably even sunnier & more positive than the great man’s original soul recording. Fuzzed out funky protest tracks released as a precursor to the label’s African Rock & Funk anthologies coming out in 2015. Side A’s X showcases Stars Of Liberty, a funk band from Zimbabwe, active in the 1970s that consisted of Fungai Malianga, Fred Lindi & Davies Mhambi. To be knowledge, this is the only known release from the band. On the flip, we have “I’m Not Selfish” by Eye Q, a Zimbabwean psychedelic rock band that formed in 1975 by Cuthbert Maziwa that released a series of singlesin the late 70s. Both are two of the most fiery ensembles to release fuzzy singles in funky protest of Ian Smith’s oppressive Rhodesian regime. Side A’s “I’m Not Made Of Iron” is a special as it’s from his untitled third LP, & had never been released in any form until this release. The flipside’s “Fisherman” which was originally released on Zebby Tembo’s 1976 LP “My Ancestors”. Both tracks were recorded at Sapra Studios in Nairobi, Kenya. Side A’s “Colombia” amounts to a slick 2-toner backed by brass riffs & samples rap interjections via Gregg Nice, from “How To Flow” by Nice & Smooth. The core sample source is “La Colegiala” (i.e. “The Schoolgirl”) by Rodolfo Y Su Típica RA 7, a Colombian cumbia group fronted by Rodolfo Aicardi; which was also recently sampled in “Ritmo” by Raffa FL (2021), “Vamos a Bailar” by Black 28 & Tropical Radio 1984 B-side “Brujería” (i.e. “Witchcraft”) is of a similar quality, swagger & verve. It’s tasty flip of the El Gran Combo salsa burner taken from the 1982 LP “Historia Musical De El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico”. El Gran Combo were led by Puero Rican salsa legend Rafael Ithier. The original tune was sampled in “Temblando” by Etc!Etc! (2012) & “Mami Yo Te Quiero” by Que Pasa (1989). Both tunes are dancefloor sure-shots, perfect for getting ready for the summer season. Edits From Detroit Vol. 3: BOSS b/w FMPM by Eddie Logix | Rocksteady Disco — RSDSE 05 | 🔥 Serious heat alert!!! 🚨 @RocksteadyDisco has pressed up another tasty little hand-stamped donut & it offers up another fine brace of Edits From Detroit on this 3rd volume in the series. This time out the man behind the buttons is Rocksteady Disco’s latest recruit @eddielogix, aka Richard Solecki. Logix’s been at the heart of the Detroit underground since 2003, known for his Technically Yeah live hardware nights, a grip of ambient & hip-hop releases, & engineering for Assemble Sound. So, a trusted source for what will groove you. He kicks off with “BOSS” — a rework of “She’s The Boss” by Mick Jagger, from the 1985 LP of the same name, who wrote the track with frequent David Bowie collaborator Carlos “Guitarlos” Alomar, a legendary Puerto Rican guitarist, composer & producer. Jagger also produced the track along with the legend Nile Rodgers. Logix delivers a master class in what an edit should be - subtle, no ego rework that draws out the best parts of unappreciated gem. Here we get deep, low-slung guitar sleaze & slow-motion groove rotations topped with sprinkles of percussion, angular rock riffs & guttural vocals. On the flip, it’s a more smooth & seductive affair with “FMPM” — a rework of the extended version of the proto-rap, italo-disco-boogie jam “AM-FM (Rap)” by Natasha King, aka Natascia Maimone, from 1983. Admittedly, while the track was familiar, I couldn’t decipher the source, but thanks to Logix for jogging my memory. “FMPM” has a dubbed-out disco feel, subtle cosmic chord work & bouncing bass that will keep any dancefloor moving. Marlena Shaw EP: California Soul (Original 7” Version) b/w Liberation Conversation (Album Version) / Let’s Wade In The Water (Original 7” Version) b/w Woman Of The Ghetto (Original 7” Version) by Marlena Shaw | Jazzman Special Products – JMANSP 003 | Sadly, Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, but the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice left a long list of amazing credits & performances when she departed. This magnificent release focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 2 45s of pure soul classics by the late songbird, each taken from her 1969 LP “The Spice Of Life” & packaged as an unmissable EP via @jazzmanrecords’s “Special Products” imprint. Donut 1’s Side A is the original 7” version of the Ashford & Simpson song “California Soul” which was a smash-hit for Shaw. It’s likely her most well known, beloved track amongst heads for that unmistakeable drum break. It’s been a go-to sample source, most notably “Check The Technique” by Gang Starr (1990), “Picnic in the Summertime” by Deee-Lite (1994), “Brainfreeze (Side 1)” by DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist (1999), “The Unseen” by Quasimoto (2000), among others. On the flip we have the LP version of “Liberation Conversation”, a funky, organ heater with the memorable “blues ain’t nothing but good woman gone bad”. On the 2nd, Side A’s “Let’s Wade In The Water” was originally released as a single on Cadet in 1966. OG copies have fetched $160, it’s nice to have included in this EP. Shaw offers up a gospel classic that stradles the secular. Then on the flip, we close things out with “Woman Of The Ghetto”, a powerful, funky depiction of Black life in American sung in the first person.
